Landscape has become an important theme for David Hockney, especially since he returned to his homeland, the Yorkshire Wolds, in the 1990s. The landscapes in this catalgoue show a series of in-depth observations of the changing seasons and the way in which light, space and nature are constantly in motion. They are reminiscent of the landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, including his monumental Wheatfield with Crows and The Harvest. This book pays particular attention to these beautiful landscapes alongside Van Gogh's depiction of nature, with a special focus on technique, perspective and colour, and the way Van Gogh and Hockney use these "formal" elements to create their particular view on the world surrounding them. The book includes an exclusive interview with David Hockney about the inspiration he has found in Van Gogh's work. Exhibition: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (01.03.-26.05.2019)

This collection of fourteen essays explores how the dominant media of our time - film and television - have engaged with the golden age as formulated in the Western classical tradition. Drawing on ancient Greek and Roman literature and culture, from Hesiod to Suetonius, these essays assess the far-reaching influence of the golden age concept on screen texts ranging from prestige projects like Gladiator and HBO's Rome, to cult classics Xanadu and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, made by auteurs including Jules Dassin and the Coen Brothers. The book also looks at fantasy (Game of Thrones), science fiction (Serenity), horror (The Walking Dead), war/combat (the 300 franchise; Centurion), and the American Western

Darwin provoked Jewish as well as Christian thinkers so that many felt obliged to establish oppositional, alternative, synthetic, or complimentary models relating Jewish religion to his theory of natural selection. This book examines a range of leading nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American progressive Jewish thinkers, with the primary focus being rabbis Kohler, Wise, Hirsch, Krauskopf, and Hahn, although many others are covered. Key themes include the widespread commitment to universal evolutionism, that is, the application of biological evolutionary theory to other realms (e.g. history, religion, cosmic), and the particular fascination with the evolution of ethical systems within human societies, bearing in mind mankind's bestial origins and the new challenges for understanding religious authority and revelation. It is argued that Reform Jewish discussions about the nature of God have been more profoundly shaped by engagement with evolutionary theory than has been recognized before, and that evolutionary thought provides the key framework for understanding Reform Judaism itself. The precise nature of Jewish Reform engagement with Christian proponents of theistic evolution are important, as are their interest in alternative evolutionists to Darwin, such as Spencer and Haeckel

The essays in this volume deal with the uses of Greek tragedy by European playwrights between the Renaissance and the Romantic period. While the individual essays include discussions of plays by Neo-Latin, Italian, French, and German playwrights, they aim at isolating the strategies of adaptation and patterns of transformation shared by the different writers as heirs to a common dramatic tradition. The first essay traces the crucial impulses that European tragedy received from the humanist imitation of ancient drama and concludes with a detailed analysis of Garnier's Antigone. This is followed by a study of Racine's Phedre as both an embodiment of and an exception to the characteristic strategies of adaptation used by seventeenth-century playwrights. A turning point in the understanding of Greek tragedy is illustrated by a comparison of Goethe's Iphigenia auf Tauris and Kleist's Penthesilea. A fourth essay, analysing two characteristic strategies in coping with the problem of knowledge in Oedipus Rex, examines that approaches taken by Voltaire, Kleist, Corneille, and Schifler and discusses Ibsen's Ghosts as the prototype of modern analytical tragedy. The next essay turns to scriptural tragedy, discussing Buchanan's Jephtha as the prototype of a genre of Christian tragedy, which applied strict imitation of Greek tragic form to theologically intractable subjects from the Old Testament. The essay concludes with a study of Athalie and Samson Agonistes as the two belated masterpieces of this sub-genre of humanist drama. Finally, the volume addresses the interaction of epic and dramatic traditions in two essays showing Milton's use of the conventions of the tragedy of knowledge in Paradise Lost and Racine's use of the Dido tragedy as the model for Berenice. This encompassing survey of an enduring dramatic tradition offers useful background for the study of drama and all those interested in the continuing life of the classical tradition

The myth of Orpheus, shaman and teacher, musician and lover, is the subject of this book. It brings together the work of scholars from a variety of disciplines to present a conspectus of the myth's career, to show how it grows and changes to meet changing demands -- always different, yet always the same. Early Greek evidence for the Orpheus myth and a speculative explanation of its origins are offered along with chapters on the treatments of the myth by Virgil and Ovid, on Orpheus and Christianity, and on the allegorizing treatment of Orpheus which characterizes the Middle Ages. Orpheus in the Renaissance is studied in the work of the philosopher Marsilio Ficino; in Italian art from 1400 to 1600; in operas by Peri and Monteverdi; in a religious allegorical play by Calderon; and in the writings of Spenser, Milton, and Bacon. The Orpheus myth has been crucial in the defining of a culture. Its history demonstrates effectively the persistence and plasticity of myth

This collection brings together twelve original essays by prominent medievalists which address problems posed by contemporary literary and cultural theory. Taken together, the essays call into question the view that contemporary criticism has little to say about medieval literature and that medieval studies should remain isolated from the issues of contemporary criticism. The contributors apply a variety of critical methodologies to explore issues in textuality, intertextuality, and the role of the reader in works of medieval writers as diverse as Chaucer, Dante, Christine de Pizan, Anselm, and Talavera. Incorporating critical approaches such as deconstructionism, Marxism, feminism, new-historicism and reader-response criticism, the essays place these writers and their texts within a wider realm of cultural reference that embraces philosophy, religion, rhetoric, history, politics, and anthropology

The core of this book is made up of five essays, by distinguished scholars of international reputation, that treat the relation between current literary theory and Romanticism. The book originated in a series of lectures presented at the University of New Mexico in 1983. All but one of the essays are published here for the first time. The contributors are Northrop Frye, W. J. T. Mitchell, J. Hillis Miller, M. H. Abrams, and Stanley Cavell. Frye's essay is a major statement on the backgrounds of Romanticism. W. J. T. Mitchell's contribution takes up, through the composite arts of William Blake, the relation of poetry and painting, writing and printing, criticism and politics. The controversy over deconstruction is the occasion for a matched pair of essays by J. Hillis Miller and M. H. Abrams, advocate and antagonist respectively. In his essay, Abrams makes a definitive statement on his view of deconstruction and its intellectual heritage. The fifth piece, by Stanley Cavell, is the first extended discussion of English and American Romanticism by this major contemporary philosopher. Following each essay is an edited transcript of a question-and-answer session in which the contributor-critic ranges widely and freely over today's critical scene. The sessions make fascinating reading. This book should be of compelJing interest to students of Romanticism as well as to students and scholars interested in the uses and implications of poststructuralist theory
