This book presents a new interpretation of the two most innovative renaissance works on the use of language, Lorenzo Valla's Repastinatio dialecticae et philosophiae (1439) and Rudolph Agricola's De inventione dialectica (1479). Mack attempts to find a path through the controversies which have recently raged around Valla's work, acknowledging the originality and skill of his attack on Aristotelian logic metaphysics, but recognizing the inconsistency (and even the Aristotelianism) of his alternative system. Mack provides the first full commentary on Agricola's work in modern times, establishing its originality and coherence. Far from being a mere popularisation of Valla, De inventione dialectica turns out to be one of the great texts of the Western rhetorical tradition. The book concludes with a survey of Agricola's influence on rhetorical thinking and practices of reading and writing, through print, the educational system, and such intermediaries as Erasmus, Vives, Melanchthon and Ramus

    Abstract ; Im Sommer 2016 hat der aus acht Teilprojekten der Freien Universität Berlin, der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und der Universität Zürich (siehe Anhang) bestehende Verbund der DFG-Forschergruppe 2305 „Diskursivierungen von Neuem. Tradition und Novation in Texten des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit“ für zunächst drei Jahre seine Arbeit aufgenommen. Wichtige Aspekte und Fragestellungen sollen in der hiermit eröffneten Reihe der Working Papers des Verbundes dargestellt werden. Das vorliegende Working Paper Nr. 1 möchte die grundsätzliche Problematik skizzieren, die gemäß dem bei der DFG erfolgreich eingereichten Verbundantrag den Ausgangspunkt der gemeinsamen Arbeit bildet, und es möchte in Grundzügen die Struktur und das Arbeitsprogramm der gesamten Gruppe vorstellen. Das Paper basiert auf dem von den Mitgliedern des Verbunds gemeinsam ausformulierten Rahmentext des FOR-Antrags.

    Abstract ; Das Teilprojekt 05 der Forschergruppe Diskursivierungen von Neuem behandelt das Verhältnis von ‚alt‘ und ‚neu‘ in Epos und Epostheorie des Secondo Cinquecento. Im Mittelpunkt des Frageinteresses steht Torquato Tassos poema eroico, die 1581 erschienene Gerusalemme liberata. Tassos poema setzt sich vom ‚alten‘ romanzo cavalleresco ab, indem es sich vor allem an dem zeitgenössisch ‚neueren‘ aristotelischen Klassizismus und an gegenreformatorischen Regelsystemen ausrichtet. Dabei kommt es, so die Grundannahme des Teilprojekts, nicht nur zu Versuchen, z.B. Formen ‚älterer‘ varietas mitzuführen und in das neue Gattungsmodell zu integrieren, sondern zu wesentlich weiter reichenden Hybridsierungen: Tasso sortiert die einschlägigen Bezugssysteme nicht antinomisch – etwa in dem Sinne, dass sein poema im Ergebnis entweder ‚gegenreformatorisch‘ oder ‚humanistisch‘ wäre –, sondern amalgamiert sie dergestalt, dass sein Epos gleichsam in between diverser Diskursregeln einen ‚neuen‘, hybriden Fiktionsraum eröffnet. Das vorliegende Working Paper Nr. 2 möchte diesen Problemzusammenhang skizzenhaft anreißen und das geplante Vorgehen im Ansatz anschaulich machen.

    Abstract ; Das Teilprojekt 03 „Die Pistole des Mars. Zeithistorische Novität und episches Formularium im Frankreich der Frühen Neuzeit“ bearbeitet ein Corpus von epischen Texten französischer und lateinischer Sprache aus dem späten 16. und dem 17. Jahrhundert, die allesamt einerseits auf Darstellungsmodi der klassisch-antikischen Epik zurückgreifen, andererseits aber Themen der unmittelbaren Zeitgeschichte behandeln: Sie vertexten realhistorische Begebenheiten, die zum Zeitpunkt der Textproduktion höchstens einhundert Jahre vergangen sind, manchmal jedoch nur wenige Monate (‚Aktualitätsepik‘). Diese aktualitätsbezogenen Texte nehmen eine genetisch ‚alte‘ Form für die poetische Vermittlung einer historisch ganz ‚neuen‘ Thematik in Dienst, wodurch die Form transformiert wird und mit heterogenen Elementen eine hybride Konfiguration bildet, die dem Aktualitätsbezug zuarbeiten soll. Das vorliegende Working Paper bietet in einem ersten Problemaufriss eine Zusammenschau zentraler Probleme der gattungshaften Definition der Aktualitätsepik, skizziert die Gattungstraditionen, auf die sie rekurriert, und verdeutlicht die somit umrissene Problemlage durch eine Analyse von vier exemplarisch ausgewählten aktualitätsepischen Texten.

    Abstract ; Seit Jahrzehnten wird die Brauchbarkeit von Epochenbegriffen immer wieder infrage gestellt, ohne dass in der Praxis (literatur-)wissenschaftlicher Arbeit auf sie verzichtet würde. So erscheinen sie auch im Titel der Forschergruppe und in Titeln von Einzelprojekten. Betrachtet man die Kritik an den Epochenbegriffen etwas näher, ergibt sich, dass in der Regel nicht Epochisierungen generell, sondern spezifische ‚Einschnitte‘ wie derjenige um 1500 infrage gestellt werden. Daneben gibt es unterschiedliche Begründungen für die prinzipielle Unhintergehbarkeit von Epochisierungen. Das Working Paper stellt einige dieser Begründungen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen zusammen und leitet daraus ab, dass es nicht um einen Verzicht auf Epochisierungen gehen kann, sondern darum, wie diese zu konstruieren sind, um kritischen Einwänden zu begegnen.
