    Main description: The study conveys insights into the creative strategies employed by German romance authors of the high Middle Ages in the adaptation of their usually French sources. With reference to Heinrich von Veldeke, noted by his contemporaries for his pioneering status, it indicates that the adaptation process was influenced by firmly established rhetorical and poetic principles that the scholarly authors habitually complied with. While this restricted the scope of their poetic license, it also encouraged their creativity.     Die Literatur der Moderne um 1900 reflektiert eine ikonische Wende im Verhältnis zwischen dem kulturellen Leitmedium der Schrift und der Konkurrenz der Bilder. Herausgefordert vom Evidenzversprechen der malerischen Avantgarde, des frühen Kinos, der Sprach- und Bewusstseinsbilder erproben Autoren wie Hofmannsthal, Rilke und Musil eine Sprache der visionären Grenzüberschreitung, die sich im Erschreiben des anderen Mediums doch stets der eigenen Mittel bewusst ist. Die Studie geht den poetologischen Konsequenzen des spezifischen Bildwissens der literarischen Moderne nach und rekonstruiert dessen wissensgeschichtliche Kontexte The literature of modernism around 1900 reflects an iconic change in the relationship between the prevailing cultural medium of writing and the rival pictorial medium. Challenged by the heightening of evidentiality promised by avant-garde painting, early cinema, and linguistic and psychological imagery, authors like Hofmannsthal, Rilke, and Musil developed a language of visionary boundary-transgression that remained fully aware of its resources while at the same time appropriating the other medium for its expressive purposes.     Main description: Es ist dies die erste umfassende Monographie zu dem barocken Romanautor Johann Beer (1655-1700) seit Richard Alewyns Entdeckung des Autors aus dem Jahre 1933 und überhaupt die erste Arbeit, die Beers gesamterzählerisches Werk präsentiert.     Main description: This is the first full-length monograph on the Baroque novelist Johann Beer (1655-1700) since Richard Alewyn's discovery of the author in 1933, and is the first study presenting Beer's entire narrative production. Alewyn restricted his investigations to a small number of central texts, leaving a large number of minor works out of account. The present study takes a different course, analyzing Beer's entire narrative oeuvre as the changing expression of a fundamentally consistent narrative intention

    Die Studie akzentuiert die spezifische Vielfalt der deutschen Barockliteratur. Sie bietet neben einem Grundriß literarischer Diversität die exemplarische Analyse gattungsinterner Spielräume von Epigramm und Sonett. Zudem erschließt sie Lizenzen, die Barockpoetiken trotz ihrer hohen Restriktivität eröffnen. Prozesse literarischer Diversifikation befördern die Unabhängigkeit der Dichtungspraxis gegenüber poetologischen Vorgaben. Inwiefern trägt dies zum Untergang des barocken Poetikparadigmas um 1730 bei? The study points up the specific diversity of German baroque literature. Alongside a general overview of this characteristic, it also provides an analysis of specific forms of latitude available in the genres epigram and sonnet. Further, it indicates different kinds of license afforded by baroque poetologies despite their otherwise highly restrictive nature. Processes of literary diversification encouraged certain freedoms in the practice of literature over and against the poetological limitations imposed. To what extent did this contribute to the decline of the baroque poetological paradigm around 1730?

    Was ist die Schönheit der Literatur? Worin unterscheidet sie sich von anderen Formen des Schönen? Dieses in der europäischen Poetik und Kunsttheorie immer wieder aufgeworfene Problem verfolgt die Studie erstmals im größeren Zusammenhang von der Antike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schönen, so zeigt sich, entdeckt und reflektiert die Literaturästhetik auf besondere Weise die Eigenart des literarischen Mediums, die spezifische Materialität und die Darstellungsleistungen der Literatur, aber nicht zuletzt auch das, was sich sprachlicher Vermittlung entzieht What makes a literary work of art beautiful? What distinguishes this kind of beauty from others? In Europe, this problem has been repeatedly addressed in poetology and art theory. The present study is the first to trace the ramifications of the problem in a broader context, extending from antiquity to the 20th century.     Main description: The study identifies metamorphosis as a form of poetic contemplation in which literary imagination divides the flow of time into graphic timepoints. Whereas the concept of ongoing metamorphosis is most frequently encountered in nature philosophy, complex metamorphosis narratives notably reflect upon and criticize the concept of discrete metamorphosis which plays a significant role in mythology and religion.     Main description: The history of the contemplation of the heavens is at the same time a history of the hermeneutics of cosmic signs. Where literary observers of the universe look up to the heavens, interpretations of the self and the cosmos are necessarily bound up with the essential issue of the readability of signs. The cosmic moment is the moment in which texts reflect their own conditions of being.     Main description: After the Nazis' rise to power, numerous writers left Germany and went into exile. But in the subsequent decades literature in German was not only marked by the political commitment of prominent refugees. Away from the domain of public discourse there was also a great deal of reflection on the 'aesthetic' consequences of National Socialism for modern culture. In the writings on literary theory produced by authors in exile, the cultural aporias of the age were translated into an epistemological poetology bodied forth in novels by well-known and forgotten authors.     Die Studie untersucht die Anfänge der deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik. Ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit rückt sie anders als üblich nicht die Rezension. Vielmehr zeigt sie die Entstehung der Literaturkritik als Prozess, in dem der zeittypische kritisch-gelehrte Impetus auf bewährte literarische Textmuster zugreift, die Publikumswirksamkeit versprechen. Dialog, Apologie und Satire erweisen sich in den Beispielanalysen als produktive Modelle, anhand derer Autoren wie Thomasius oder Lessing die noch heute spezifische dialogische Grundstruktur ausprägen oder den Verriss erproben The study examines the beginnings of critical engagement with literary products in Germany. Unlike most studies of its kind it does not centre on reviews. Instead, it traces the development of the literary critique as a process in which the impetus for scholarly critical engagement draws upon literary models likely to be successful with the public. In the analyses conducted here, dialogue, apologia, and satire stand revealed as productive models with the help of which authors like Thomasius or Lessing flexed their critical muscles with sometimes scathing results and also charted out the specifically dialogic structure still typical of this kind of criticism

From the starting point of a critical review of previous scholarship on Plautus and the most important works on dramatic comedy as a phenomenon in itself, the author develops her own model of the interplay between drama, comedy and tension.
