This thesis analyses the similarities extant in a coterie of German Spring poems written between 1700–1900. Based on the following concepts – phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty), aesthetics (G. Böhme, Seel), cultural ecology (Abram, Weber) and poetic theory (Schlaffer, Zymner, Lösener) – the author’s insights throw new light on many texts, several of which are canonical, thus enhancing the reader’s sensual experience of the poem as well as sharpening appreciation of the poem’s form. The author’s examination of the selected poems reveal that they share 4 central characteristics of Spring which played a significant role in the development of lyric poetry: (1) the blossoming of youth, (2) the sensuality of the beloved and the lover, (3) the dreams and fantasies engendered by passion, and (4) the loss of fading youth. The author distinguishes three different levels and comments on their commonalities and varied symbiotic characteristics. To begin with, male and female poets alike stress the sensual aspects of the coming season by presenting the mild light, tender colors, and longed-for warmth, the wind and the fragrances, the growth and movement of plants and animals as Spring’s ambassadors.Secondly, this palpable drive and growth supports what the genre of lyric poetry bears witness to: discovering meanings of the natural cycles. In this way, the months following Winter are signs of regeneration and rebirth, of Youth and youthful love. Similarly, day and night can be viewed as the time during which the young dream confidently or the elderly and sick, surrounded by the singing of birds celebrating the return of Spring, mourn the loss of their youthful joie de vivre. Lastly, these poems are inseparable from the cultural tradition of May festivals that celebrate the beginning of another cycle of renewal and another year of growth.

This thesis deals with the use of poems and short stories in lessons of Italian as a foreign language in order to teach vocabulary and improve reading competence. The theoretical part discusses the reading process and vocabulary acquisition in a foreign language and shows how literary texts can have a positive influence on these aspects. For this purpose, the strategies of “top-down” and “bottom-up” processing, the schema theory as well as different reading strategies and the cycle of reading in a foreign language are explained. Furthermore, findings in the area of vocabulary acquisition concerning, amongst others, the mental lexicon, the short and long term memory and the active and passive vocabulary are reported. The impact the established data has on the actual teaching process is also discussed. In the practical part, five teaching units based on short stories and poems for the levels A1, A2 and B1 are presented. The literary texts, by Gianni Rodari, belong to the area of children literature and are authentic. They are, therefore, written for a native audience and do not aim at teaching the foreign language itself but at entertaining the reader, which is why students find reading them motivating and interesting. Furthermore, in reading literary texts, students improve their reading rate and their textual comprehension by learning how to deal with unknown linguistic structures. Additionally, the short stories and poems used in this thesis offer a rich context, which helps students to memorize new words and provides them with necessary authentic models of the foreign language. The teaching units presented in this thesis intend to show how literary texts can enrich Italian lessons and contribute to interesting and stimulating classes.

; The techniques of persuasion of the Sangspruch-texts of the 13th century can be caught with concept of the public relations more extensively and more appropriately than with the concept of Propaganda. With examinations of some texts Brückner shows that in the process of understanding the specific polyvalence brings the texts closer to the functional field of public relations than that of propaganda, beside the often only gradual differences within the communication modes and communication tools. The political Sangspruch of the 13th century establishes its own inclusion rules, which are serving the difference of sense and text as a catalyst for the success of the communication, while it orders and excludes perception possibilities of its political subjects. The texts of the Sangspruch are backed by a basic difference of politics and religion, which is aesthetically composed and elaborated in the modus of the mediation work. In the context of the Systemtheorie on which the communication is determined as a basic social phenomenon, the texts show an enlargement, here in their functional possibilities of communication. As it could be shown, they are neither obliged to a one-direction communication mode, nor can they be reduced to a persuasive communication form of the Propaganda, in spite of her nearness to pragmatism. The aesthetic communication form ‒ the Sangspruch ‒ takes over new social functions for the society of the 13th century: These include the management of attention as a navigation of political conflicts, the meaning management as a mediation work between foreign-image and selfimage of political actors and organizations, the strategy management in relation to chances and risks of the communication of political conflicts.

; This study aims to represent space and subjectivity contained in the lyric work of the Colombian poet Aurelio Arturo (1906-1974) in late modernity (according to Peter Zima) and the specific forms it assumes in 20th century Colombian poetry. To accomplish this, Aurelio Arturo´s work is divided into three creation stages: Youth poems (1927-1930), poems from Morada al Sur epoch (1931-1963) and late poems (1963-1974). Social modernization of the twenties and how Rafael Maya (1897-1980) and José Eustasio Rivera (1888-1928) reacted to that phenomenon were taken into account to analyse the first mentioned stage. Regard the second stage, social differentiation and artistic autonomy, and the way these influenced Eduardo Carranza´s poetry (1913-1985) and Jorge Gaitán Durán´s work, were the cornerstone for the analysis. Finally, the third stage was analysed using the concepts of secularization and urbanization registered by Nadaist work of Jaime Jaramillo Escobar (1932), on one hand, and José Manuel Arango´s poetry (1937-2002), on the other. Both, the represented space and the subjectivity, experience throughout the sequence of Arturian creation stages an enlargement of their dimensions. This amplification, in a content and mediation level, can be described by using the concept of “ individuation process” (C.G. Jung). The present study used transgeneric application of narratologic categories to do textual analysis of lyric poems according to Peter Hühn and Jörg Schönert.

How can humour and irony in writing both create and destroy boundaries? In the Belly of a Laughing God examines how eight contemporary Native women poets in Canada and the United States - Joy Harjo, Louise Halfe, Kimberly Blaeser, Marilyn Dumont, Diane Glancy, Jeannette Armstrong, Wendy Rose, and Marie Annharte Baker - employ humour and irony to address the intricacies of race, gender, and nationality. While recognizing that humour and irony are often employed as methods of resistance, this careful analysis also acknowledges the ways that they can be used to assert or restore order.Using the framework of humour and irony, five themes emerge from the words of these poets: religious transformations; generic transformations; history, memory, and the nation; photography and representational visibility; and land and the significance of 'home.' Through the double-voice discourse of irony and the textual surprises of humour, these poets challenge hegemonic renderings of themselves and their cultures, even as they enforce their own cultural norms

The Saints in Old Norse and Early Modern Icelandic Poetry is a complimentary volume to The Legends of the Saints in Old Norse–Icelandic Prose (UTP 2013). While its predecessor dealt primarily with medieval prose texts about the saints, this volume not only focuses on medieval poems about saints but also on Icelandic devotional poetry created during the early modern period. The handlist organizes saints' names, manuscripts, and editions of individual poems with references to approximate dates of the manuscripts, as well as modern Icelandic editions and translations. Each entry concludes with secondary literature about the poem in question. These features combine to make The Saints in Old Norse and Early Modern Icelandic Poetry an invaluable resource for scholars and students in the field

Browning's lyrics are favourite choices for anthologies but are rarely examined closely. This is the first full-length study of the lyrics, and includes detailed analyses of such well-known poems as Love Among the Ruins, Two in the Campagna, A Serenade at the Villa, A Toccata of Galuppi's, By the Fireside, and James Lee's Wife. Eleanor Cook explores Browning's use of repeated images and themes in the lyrics, examines these patterns in other poems and in his letters, and analyses their growth and change in all his work. She demonstrates how the lyrics may be linked with Browning's other work and shows something of his essential artistic unity. His imaginary is found to be more consistent and complex than is usually assumed. Students of Browning will find this work stimulating and instructive, while lovers of Browning will read it with pure pleasure. The reader will return to many of the poems with a rciher sense of their continuing vitality. In an earlier form this study was awarded the first A.S.P. Woodhouse Prize by the University of Toronto

While there is a long tradition of research into eddic poetry, including the poems classed as wisdom literature, much of this has approached the subject either as a primarily philological commentary or has addressed literary and thematic topics of individual or small groups of poems. This book offers a wide-ranging enquiry into the defining features of Old Norse wisdom, including the representation of wisdom in texts which cross traditional generic boundaries. It builds on recent advances in understanding of pre-Christian religion in Scandinavia, and calls on comparative and supporting work from several different disciplinary backgrounds (including literary theory, other medieval literatures and anthropology). Speaker and Authority interrogates important questions about the concept of knowledge, as well as its role in medieval Scandinavian society and its broader European cultural context

In Gratitude for All the Gifts explores the literary and cultural links between the bestselling, Nobel Prize-winning Northern Irish poet Seamus Heaney and the preeminent Eastern European poets of the twentieth century, including fellow Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz and Zbigniew Herbert. Magdalena Kay opens new ground in comparative literary studies with her close analysis of Heaney's poetic work from the perspective of the English-speaking West's attraction, and especially Heane''s own attraction, to Eastern European poetry. While placing Milosz and Herbert in their cultural contexts and keeping an eye on the poems in their original Polish, this innovative and energetic study focuses on how Heaney encountered their work in translation. In Gratitude for All the Gifts thus allows us to see what happens when poetic forms, histories, and themes travel between countries and encourages us to understand cultural crossing not just thematically, but also in terms of form, voice, and aesthetic intent

Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), the eminent Russian-American writer and intellectual, is best known for his novels, though he was also the author of plays, poems, and short stories. In this important new work, Paul D. Morris offers a comprehensive reading of Nabokov's Russian and English poetry, until now a neglected facet of his oeuvre. Morris' unique and insightful study re-evaluates Nabokov's poetry and demonstrates that poetry was in fact central to his identity as an author and was the source of his distinctive authorial - lyric - voice. After offering a critical overview of the multi-staged history of the reception of Nabokov's poetry and an extensive analysis of his poetic writing, Morris argues that Nabokov's poetry has largely been misinterpreted and its place in his oeuvre misunderstood. Through a detailed examination of the form and content of Nabokov's writings, Morris demonstrates that Nabokov's innovations in the realms of drama, the short story, and the novel were profoundly shaped by his lyric sensibility

The sixteenth century in France was marked by religious warfare and shifting political and physical landscapes. Between 1549 and 1584, however, the Pléiade poets, including Pierre de Ronsard, Joachim Du Bellay, Rémy Belleau, and Antoine de Baïf, produced some of the most abiding and irenic depictions of rural French landscapes ever written. In The Poetry of Place, Louisa Mackenzie reveals and analyzes the cultural history of French paysage through her study of lyric poetry and its connections with landscape painting, cartography, and land use history. In the face of destructive environmental change, lyric poets in Renaissance France often wrote about idealized physical spaces, reclaiming the altered landscape to counteract the violence and loss of the period and creating in the process what Mackenzie, following David Harvey, terms 'spaces of hope.' This unique alliance of French Renaissance studies with cultural geography and eco-criticism demonstrates that sixteenth-century poetry created a powerful sense of place which continues to inform national and regional sentiment today

In the English Renaissance, poetry was imagined to inspire moral behaviour in its readers, but the efficacy of poetry was also linked to 'conjuration,' the theologically dangerous practice of invoking spirits with words. Magical Imaginations explores how major writers of the period – including Spenser, Marlowe, and Shakespeare – negotiated this troubling link between poetry and magic in their attempts to transform readers and audiences with the power of art. Through analyses of texts ranging from sermons and theological treatises to medical tracts and legal documents, Genevieve Guenther sheds new light on magic as a cultural practice in early modern England. She demonstrates that magic was a highly pragmatic, even cynical endeavor infiltrating unexpected spheres – including Elizabethan taxation policy and Jacobean political philosophy. With this new understanding of early modern magic, and a fresh context for compelling readings of classic literary works, Magical Imaginations reveals the central importance of magic to English literary history

During America's founding period, poets and balladeers engaged in a series of literary "wars" against political leaders, journalists, and each other, all in the name of determining the political course of the new nation. Political poems and songs appeared regularly in newspapers (and as pamphlets and broadsides), commenting on political issues and controversies and satirizing leaders like Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. Drawing on hundreds of individual poems—including many that are frequently overlooked—Poetry Wars reconstructs the world of literary-political struggle as it unfolded between the Stamp Act crisis and the War of 1812.Colin Wells argues that political verse from this period was a unique literary form that derived its cultural importance from its capacity to respond to, and contest the meaning of, other printed texts—from official documents and political speeches to newspaper articles and rival political poems. First arising during the Revolution as a strategy for subverting the authority of royal proclamations and congressional declarations, poetic warfare became a ubiquitous part of early national print culture. Poets representing the emerging Federalist and Republican parties sought to wrest control of political narratives unfolding in the press by engaging in literary battles.Tracing the parallel histories of the first party system and the rise and eventual decline of political verse, Poetry Wars shows how poetic warfare lent urgency to policy debates and contributed to a dynamic in which partisans came to regard each other as threats to the republic's survival. Breathing new life into this episode of literary-political history, Wells offers detailed interpretations of scores of individual poems, references hundreds of others, and identifies numerous terms and tactics of the period's verse warfare
