    Main description: The volume traces the cognitive changes to which the understanding of literature was exposed from the late 16th century onwards. Engagement with the literature of antiquity was determined by the development of a philological form of criticism that was at odds with Christian apologetics in a time of confessional dissension. Seen thus, 'modern' literature from Opitz to Brockes appears as an integral part of a much more comprehensive culture of scholarly endeavour. Through a critique of his forerunners in Marxist theory (the historicist Marxism of Lukács, the work of Macherey, Eagleton, and Jameson), Frow seeks to define the strengths and the limitations of this tradition and then to extend its possibilities in a radical reworking of the concept of discourse. He develops the notion of literature as a historically specific system within a network of discourses. Frow goes on to elaborate a number of central theoretical categories and to explore the historical dimension of those categories. Drawing in particular on Russian Formalism, he develops a theory of the dynamics of literary change and of the historical pressures that shape the literary system. He tests and extends his categories through readings of texts by Petronius, Hölderlin, DeLillo, Dickens, Frank Hardy, and others. The final chapter, a reading of Derrida and Foucault, poses the question of the possibility of setting limits to reading and the power of limits to determine literary history

Vielmehr zeigt sie die Entstehung der Literaturkritik als Prozess, in dem der zeittypische kritisch-gelehrte Impetus auf bewährte literarische Textmuster zugreift, die Publikumswirksamkeit versprechen. Dialog, Apologie und Satire erweisen sich in den Beispielanalysen als produktive Modelle, anhand derer Autoren wie Thomasius oder Lessing die noch heute spezifische dialogische Grundstruktur ausprägen oder den Verriss erproben The study examines the beginnings of critical engagement with literary products in Germany. Unlike most studies of its kind it does not centre on reviews. Instead, it traces the development of the literary critique as a process in which the impetus for scholarly critical engagement draws upon literary models likely to be successful with the public. In the analyses conducted here, dialogue, apologia, and satire stand revealed as productive models with the help of which authors like Thomasius or Lessing flexed their critical muscles with sometimes scathing results and also charted out the specifically dialogic structure still typical of this kind of criticism

    Nach 1945 herrscht unter westeuropäischen Intellektuellen der Konsens, dass sich literarisch ‚hochwertige‘ Künstler in den totalitären Systemen nicht kompromittiert haben. Anhand von drei Fallstudien– Curzio Malaparte (1898–1957), Louis-Ferdinand Céline (1894–1961) und Gottfried Benn (1886–1956)– untersucht Astrid Arndt, wie das literarische Feld mit Autoren umgeht, die diese behauptete Inkompatibilität von ästhetischem Gelingen und moralischem Versagen konterkarieren. Dabei zeigen sich paradigmatische Argumentationsstrukturen, die sich– wie die Arbeit anhand aktueller Debatten nachweist– bis heute halten After 1945 there was general consensus among western European intellectuals that no authors of 'high' literary standing could possibly have compromised themselves in their relations with the totalitarian systems. With reference to three case studies - Curzio Malaparte, Louis-Ferdinand Ciline, Gottfried Benn - the study examines how literary criticism deals with authors who fly in the face of this declared incompatibility between aesthetic achievement and moral dereliction. In so doing it points up paradigmatic argumentation structures that have asserted themselves to this day, demonstrating the point with reference to more recent debates (e.g. those involving Peter Handke and Martin Walser)
