    Das Buch beschreibt Schmerz als kulturelle Konstruktion, als Gemeinplatz der modernen Identitäts(-er)findung. Die Möglichkeit intensiver Schmerzerfahrung gilt als Privileg des Menschen. Dieses Privileg wird gerade bei chronischen Schmerzen zu einem Fluch. Neue Therapien schlagen deshalb vor, den ‚eigenen Schmerz verstehen zu lernen’, um damit alternative Wege der Heilung zu beschreiten. Untersucht werden deshalb zunächst die Zusammenhänge zwischen den zentralen Begriffen der hermeneutischen Theorie und den Metaphern der Schmerzkommunikation. Dabei wird deutlich, dass Schlüsselbegriffe wie ‚Intensität’ und grundlegende, die Beschreibung lenkende Unterscheidungen wie ‚Oberfläche und Tiefe’ oder ‚das Ganze und die Tiefe’ nicht auf diese Bereiche zu begrenzen sind, sondern ganz unterschiedliche Theorien und Disziplinen vorstrukturieren. Schmerz kann also als Präzedenzfall in einer von der Hermeneutik hervorgebrachten Begriffskette analysiert werden. Die Reihe der analysierten prekären Begriffe und Konzepte reicht dabei von Winckelmanns Kunst-Emphase in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts und Nietzsches ‚Lob der Oberflächlichkeit’ bis zu Carl Schmitts Konzept einer intensiven Politik und der modernen Therapieszene. An extraordinary amount, as Stephen Jaeger demonstrates.Unlike current efforts to read medieval culture through modern mores, Stephen Jaeger contends that love and sex in the Middle Ages relate to each other very differently than in the postmedieval period. Love was not only a mode of feeling and desiring, or an exclusively private sentiment, but a way of behaving and a social ideal. It was a form of aristocratic self-representation, its social function to show forth virtue in lovers, to raise their inner worth, to increase their honor and enhance their reputation.     Main description: In a 1968 speech on British immigration policy, Enoch Powell insisted that although a black man may be a British citizen, he can never be an Englishman. This book explains why such a claim was possible to advance and impossible to defend. Ian Baucom reveals how "Englishness" emerged against the institutions and experiences of the British Empire, rendering English culture subject to local determinations and global negotiations. In his view, the Empire was less a place where England exerted control than where it lost command of its own identity. Analyzing imperial crisis zones--including the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Morant Bay uprising of 1865, the Amritsar massacre of 1919, and the Brixton riots of 1981--Baucom asks if the building of the empire completely refashioned England's narratives of national identity.     Main description: In recent decades, historians and social theorists have given much thought to the concept of "culture," its origins in Western thought, and its usefulness for social analysis. In this book, Susan Hegeman focuses on the term's history in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. She shows how, during this period, the term "culture" changed from being a technical term associated primarily with anthropology into a term of popular usage. She shows the connections between this movement of "culture" into the mainstream and the emergence of a distinctive "American culture," with its own patterns, values, and beliefs. Hegeman points to the significant similarities between the conceptions of culture produced by anthropologists Franz Boas, Edward Sapir, Ruth Benedict, and Margaret Mead, and a diversity of other intellectuals, including Randolph Bourne, Van Wyck Brooks, Waldo Frank, and Dwight Macdonald. Hegeman reveals how relativist anthropological ideas of human culture--which stressed the distance between modern centers and "primitive" peripheries--came into alliance with the evaluating judgments of artists and critics. This anthropological conception provided a spatial awareness that helped develop the notion of a specifically American "culture." She also shows the connections between this new view of "culture" and the artistic work of the period by, among others, Sherwood Anderson, Jean Toomer, Thomas Hart Benton, Nathanael West, and James Agee and depicts in a new way the richness and complexity of the modernist milieu in the United States

Diese stellte sich die Aufgabe, einem Forschungsdesiderat nachzugehen: dem Stellenwert der Fußreise innerhalb der deutschsprachigen Reiseliteratur des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts. Behandelt werden autobiographische und dichterische Texte, die in exemplarischer Weise Auskunft geben über einen Sachverhalt: der in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts einsetzenden sozialen Aufwertung der Reise zu Fuß (und deren Reflexion), die einhergeht mit einer Raumerfahrung, die aus der Sicht des Kutschenreisenden so nicht möglich war. - Ergänzt wird der Band durch eine Quellenbibliographie zu den Fußreisen in dem behandelten Zeitraum

    Main description: The volume assembles papers presented at a conference held at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research into the European Enlightenment. The aim of the meeting was to close a conspicuous research gap by looking at the status of journeys on foot in 18th and 19th century travel literature in German. The articles examine autobiographical and literary texts giving representative information on the phenomenon of the new social prestige accorded to journeys on foot (and reflection upon them) identifiable in the second half of the 18th century. Central to this reevaluation was an appreciation of the heightened experience of space and distance denied to coach travelers. The volume closes with a source bibliography of works pertaining to journeys on foot in the period in question
