    Zunächst ist es der Text, der eine Geschichte zu uns bringt. Aber er tut das über Bilder, die wir, die Leser, vor unserem geistigen Auge entstehen lassen. Diese Bilder sind dem Bild, das der Autor vor sich hatte, ähnlich, sie sind aber nicht identisch. Ein Text wird so zu Texten, die der Zahl seiner Leser entspricht. Bei Bildern wird das optische Angebot schon geliefert, wir müssen sie nicht mehr in uns bilden. Aber auch hier wird Kreativität auf anderer Ebene möglich. Illustrationen in Kinder- und Jugendbüchern spiegeln Lesarten, aber auch Zeiten und das Wandelbare von Stilen und Auffassungen.Dieser Band nähert sich der Faszination der Buchillustration auf verschiedene Weise. Befragt wurden IllustratorInnen nach ihren Motiven und didaktischen Vorgehensweisen, auch nach einem Illustrationsbeispiel. Illustratoren erläutern die Entstehung von Bildern und ihren textlichen Zusammenhang. Diskutiert wird didaktischer und rezensorischer Umgang mit Buchillustrationen bis hin zu Kriterien für die Bilderbuchbeurteilung und dem Handwerkzeug zur Bildbeschreibung.Der Band füllt zahlreiche weiße Flecken im Kenntniszusammenhang von Buch und Bild, insbesondere dort, wo der Wissenschaftler den Künster fragt, wie das denn nun genau funktioniert mit dem Reiz, der vom Text, vom Satz oder gar nur Wort ausgeht und den Impuls für ein Bild auslöst.
