    ger: Neurowissenschaftliche Studien zur Erforschung der menschlichen Intelligenz konnten unter Anwendung verschiedener Methoden übereinstimmend zeigen, dass Gehirne intelligenterer Menschen dahingehend effizienter arbeiten, dass sie bei der Bearbeitung kognitiver Aufgaben eine fokussiertere und insgesamt geringere kortikale Aktivierung zeigen (Haier et al.., 1992; für einen Überblick siehe Neubauer & Fink, 2009). Doppelmayr et al.. (2005) zeigte, dass Aufgabenschwierigkeit einen moderierenden Einfluss auf die kortikale Aktivierung hat. Mental Effort könnte eine Erklärung für dieses Ergebnis liefern. Es stellt die willentliche und bewusste Anpassung an variierende Aufgabenschwierigkeit aufgrund motivationaler Prozesse dar. Diese ?Energie-Mobilisierung? zur Erreichung kognitiver Ziele kann als kompensatorische Strategie interpretiert werden (Hockey, 1997). Daher wurde in dieser Studie der Einfluss von Aufgabenschwierigkeit, Intelligenz und Leistungsmotivation auf neurale Effizienz untersucht. N = 53 Schüler bearbeiteten in drei verschieden Schwierigkeitsbedingungen Zahlenfolgen, die ihrem persönlichen Fähigkeitsniveau entsprachen. Nach Anpassung des Aufgabenniveaus an die individuelle Personenfähigkeit zeigten intelligentere im Vergleich zu weniger intelligenten Personen bei der Bearbeitung von numerisch-induktiven Aufgaben vergleichbare kortikale Gehirnaktivierung (ereignis-bezogene Desynchronisation, ERD) im oberen Alpha-Band. Eine vierfache Interaktion der Faktoren ipsativer Aufgabenschwierigkeit x Intelligenz x Motivation x Areal konnte gezeigt werden. Niedrig-intelligente, gering motivierte Personen weniger ERD in anteriofrontalen (AF) Gehirnbereichen bei der Bearbeitung von einfachen Aufgaben verglichen mit weniger intelligenten, hoch motivierten und hoch intelligenten, gering motivierten Personen zeigen. Diese Ergebnisse werden auf der Basis der Erwartungen und Erklärungsansätzen aus der aktuellen Literatur zum Thema Motivation und Mental Effort diskutiert. eng: Neuroscientific research on human intelligence yielded evidence that brains of highly intelligent individuals work more efficient in a way, that they display more focused and therefore overall less cortical activation while working on cognitive tasks (Haier et al.., 1992, for an overview see Neubauer & Fink, 2009). Furthermore, Doppelmayr et al.. (2005) could show that task difficulty moderates cortical activation. Persons of higher intelligence exhibited more brain activation during difficult tasks. A concept that might account for this finding is mental effort. This concept can be understood as the voluntarily mobilisation of mental energy or resources of attention towards a task, which could be interpreted as a compensatory strategy (Hockey, 1997) Therefore, the present study was conducted in order to investigate the influence of task difficulty, intelligence and achievement motivation on neural efficiency. N = 53 high school students worked on number series, which were administered according to their personal ability level, in three different conditions (easy vs. medium vs. hard). High-intelligent persons showed similar cortical brain activation (event-related desynchronisation, ERD) than low-intelligent persons in the upper alpha band, when items were delivered/shown according to their ability level. A four-way interaction of ipsative item difficulty level x IQ group x achievement group x area emerged. Post-hoc analyses showed that at anteriofrontal (AF) sites less ERD could only be observed for the IQ-low, avoidance subjects compared to IQ-low, approach-driven and IQ-high, avoidance-driven subjects within the easy condition. The obtained results are discussed in terms of expectations and recent literature on motivation and mental effort served to lay the ground work for explaining the results.

    ger: Diese Studie verfolgt das Ziel, Intelligenz, Selbstdisziplin, Interesse und Motivation als Prädiktoren der Schulleistung zu untersuchen. Sie lässt sich in zwei Bereiche aufgliedern. Im ersten Teil wird neben Intelligenz nach dem optimalen Set an Prädiktoren gesucht. Im zweiten Teil wird das Zusammenspiel der einzelnen Prädiktoren durch ein Strukturgleichungsmodell ergründet. Den Schwerpunkt des hypothetischen Modells bilden der Zusammenhang zwischen Interesse und Schulleistung, der durch die intrinsische Motivation mediiert wird, sowie der Zusammenhang zwischen extrinsischer Motivation und Schulleistung, welcher durch Selbstdisziplin moderiert wird. Eine Stichprobe von 464 Achtklässlern beantwortete Fragebögen zu Selbstdisziplin, Interesse, intrinsischer und extrinsischer Motivation, Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung, Selbstkonzept, Arbeitsvermeidung und Gewissenhaftigkeit im Herbst 2011. Die Intelligenzwerte wurden im Sommer 2011 erhoben. Hierarchische Regressionsanalysen für Mathematik, Deutsch und Englisch identifizieren das Selbstkonzept nach Intelligenz als stärksten Prädiktor der Schulleistung. Auch Gewissenhaftigkeit, die Selbstwirksamkeitserwartung sowie die identifizierte Regulation der extrinsischen Motivation konnten zusätzlich zur Varianzaufklärung der Schulleistung beitragen. Im zweiten Teil der Studie wurde aufgrund der vorangegangenen Analysen das ursprüngliche Modell modifiziert. Statt des Zusammenhangs von Interesse und Schulleistung, der durch die intrinsische Motivation mediiert wird, wird nun ein Zusammenhang zwischen intrinsischer Motivation und der Schulleistung angenommen, der durch Interesse mediiert wird. Auch der Zusammenhang zwischen extrinsischer Motivation und Schulleistung, moderiert durch Selbstdisziplin, konnte nicht gefunden werden, so dass dieser durch einen Pfad von Selbstdisziplin zur Schulleistung ersetzt wurde. Aufgrund des explorativen Charakters sollten die Ergebnisse beider Teilstudien an weiteren Stichproben überprüft werden. eng: The aim of the present study is to investigate intelligence, self-discipline, interest and motivation as predictors of school achievement. The study is divided into two major parts. The first part is aimed to find the optimal set of predictor variables apart from intelligence. The second part investigates the interaction of intelligence, interest, self-discipline and motivation in a structural equation model. The hypothetical model focuses on the relation between interest and school achievement, which is mediated by intrinsic motivation and on the relation between extrinsic motivation and school achievement, which is moderated by self discipline. A sample of 464 eight graders completed questionnaires of self-discipline, interest, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, ability-self-perception, work avoidance and conscientiousness in the fall of 2011. Intelligence test scores were assessed in summer 2011. Hierarchical regression analysis, which were performed for grades in Math, German and English show, that after intelligence, the self concept is the strongest predictor of school achievement. Moreover, conscientiousness, self-efficacy and the identified regulation of extrinsic motivation contribute to the prediction of school achievement. For the second part of the study, which assumes a hypothetical model, the results led the author to modify the supposed paths. Instead of the relation between interest and school achievement, which is mediated by intrinsic motivation, there is now hypothesized a relation between intrinsic motivation and school achievement mediated by interest. Also the relation between extrinsic motivation and school achievement moderated by self-discipline could not be found, so that the relation was replaced by a path from self-discipline to school achievement. Because of the explorative character, the results from both substudies need to be verified with new samples.

    ger: A new look at the characterization of Twains fictional protagonists through the eyes of the psychologist Daniel Goleman can help identify why it is especially Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn who capture the hearts of the reading public. Daniel Goleman, in his books on Emotional Intelligence, tells people how they can train themselves to be more successful in life through becoming more conscious of what he considers five basic intelligences: self-awareness, control of emotions, self-motivation, empathy and dealing with interpersonal relationships. These intelligences are explained in detail. In Twains novels, it appears that the more successfully the reader sees this training process, the more the reader can find meaning in the work. Five of Twains major fictional works are examined to show not only how Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn deal with their environment in emotionally intelligent ways, but also look at Tom Canty, Prince Edward, Roxy, Puddnhead Wilson and Hank Morgan to see how each character reflects emotional intelligence. In addition, a short examination is made of the history of psychology and education during the time Mark Twain wrote his novels.
    eng: Ein neuer Blickwinkel zur Charakterisierung von Twains Romanfiguren mit den Augen von dem Psychologen Daniel Goleman hilft zu verstehen warum gerade Tom Sawyer und Huck Finn die Herzen der Leserschaft erobern. In seinen Büchern von Emotionaler Intelligenz beschreibt Daniel Goleman wie man sich selbst trainieren kann, um im Leben mehr erfolgreich zu sein. Dazu bestärkt man, wie er es beschreibt, die fünf Grundelimente von Intelligenz: Selbstbewusstsein, Kontrolle der Emotionen, Selbst-motivierung, Einfühlungsvermögen und die Handhabe von persönliche Beziehungen. Diese Intelligenzen sind in Detail beschrieben. Es scheint, je mehr der Leser diesen Trainings Prozeß erkennt, desto mehr Bedeutung findet er in Twains Romanen. Fünf von Twains Haupttiteln wurden hier durchgearbeitet, um zu zeigen, wie nicht nur Tom Sawyer und Huck Finn mit ihrer Umgebung auf emotional-intelligentem Weg fertig wurden, sondern auch Tom Canty, Prinz Edward, Roxy, Puddingkopf Wilson und Hank Morgan, um zu sehen, wie jeder Charakter seine eigene emotionale Intelligenz widerspiegelt. Zusätzlich wurde eine kurze Darstellung zum Stand der Psychologie und Bildung, während der Zeit als Mark Twain seine Romane schrieb, erstellt.
