    Abstract: An imitation of the literary styles and modes of expression of the great writers in the post-World War II was the criterion of success for any male or female writer. The conventions of T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden influenced the poetics and thought of the younger generation poets. For example, Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) was an ardent disciple of these conventions in her early career. She was influenced by the phallogocentric discourse of subject formation. She followed this man-made discourse to be accepted within the literary circle as a successful woman writer, but she realized that this discourse didn’t help women in the expression of their female voices. This study explores the failure of the phallogocentric techniques and modes of writing in the expression of Rich's female voice in An Unsaid Word (1951). The study is conducted in the light of Lacanian Symbolic system of identification. The study concludes that Lacanian system of identification was behind the distortions of meaning

    Abstract: Antony Pogorelsky (1787-1836) (the pseudonym of А. А. Perovsky) was one of the writers active in the early stages of Russian romantic prose, when romanticism, with its new artistic outlook based on rapt attention towards and keen interest in the inner world of feelings and emotions of its literary heroes, replaced the literary movement of sentimentalism with its orientation toward the ideas of the enlightenment. The current article is aimed at the investigation of the first book by A. Pogorelsky "The Double, or My Evenings in Malorossia", the novelty of which lies not only in the fact that the book is directly correlated with the traditions of West European romanticism (which was undoubtedly well-known to the writer), but also in the introduction of a new principle of composition into Russian literature (the cycle of several stories united through dialogic framing), which was the first experiment of this kind in the Russian literary environment and would soon become one of the favo

    The art of German printmaker and sculptor Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945) is famously empathetic; Kollwitz imbued her prints, drawings, and sculpture with eloquent and often painful commentary on the human condition, especially the horrors of war. This insightful book, the first English-language catalogue on Kollwitz in more than two decades, offers the singular opportunity to examine her work against the tumultuous backdrop of World Wars I and II. The societal cost of war became an enduring subject for Kollwitz after her youngest son died on the battlefield in Flanders in 1914. She dedicated much of the remainder of her career to creating images that questioned the efficacy of war, exposed its devastation, and promoted peace. The essays discuss the motifs she developed in this pursuit-young widows, grieving parents alongside maternal figures that serve as defenders, guardians, activists, and mourners-within the context of German visual culture from 1914 to 1945.     ger: Das 18. Jahrhundert, als Zeitalter der Aufklärung, ist durch eine Vielzahl von Reformen und Prozessen des Umschwungs in unterschiedlichen Bereichen geprägt. Es gilt als eine Epoche der Vernunft, welche das Volk in Religion, Politik und gesellschaftlichen Aspekten weiter entwickelte. Der „vernünftig handelnde Mensch“ steht im Vordergrund und entwickelt ein Umdenken in Bezug auf seine bisherigen Vorstellungen. Es führte zu einer gesellschaftlichen Veränderung, bei der ein Emanzipationsprozess stattfand, dass insbesondere das Bild des weiblichen Geschlechts stärkte und veränderte.Da die Frau im Zentrum dieser Arbeit steht, wird der Fokus auf die Lebensumstände der damaligen Frauenrollen gelegt. Unter Bezugnahme auf Carlo Goldoni und Gotthold Ephraim Lessing wird auch zur Entwicklung des Theaters Stellung genommen, das zu dieser Zeit eine wesentliche gesellschaftliche Rolle einnimmt.Der Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist Goldonis Werk La locandiera, wie auch Lessings Emilia Galotti. Beide Werke wurden im 18. Jahrhundert verfasst und präsentieren zwei verschiedene Darstellungen von Frauen in dieser Epoche. Die weiblichen Figuren in den jeweiligen Werken bilden die Grundlage für die Analyse der weiblichen Darstellung in diesem Zeitalter. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es die Rolle der Frau in jenem Jahrhundert festzustellen und zu definieren und anhand Goldonis und Lessings Werke die Darstellung der Frau in den jeweiligen Werken zu vergleichen. eng: The eighteenth century – as the age of Enlightenment – has been determined by a multitude of reforms and processes within various segments. It is deemed to be an era of rationality, which has developed the people in the fields of religion, politics, and society. The „reasonably acting human“ is in the center of attention and changes its previous ideas. A social changed emerged accompanied by a process of emancipation, which changed and strengthened especially the image of the female gender.As the female gender is in the center of this work, the focus is being set on the life circumstances of women’s roles at that time. With reference to Carlo Goldoni and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, this work comments on the development of theaters, which had an important role in society during this era.The objects of investigation of this thesis is La locandiera, a work written by Goldoni and Emilia Galotti written by Lessing. Both works derive from the eighteenth century and represent two different interpretations of women from this era. The analysis of the women’s role is based on the female characters of the respective works. The aim of this thesis is to define and to capture the women’s role during the course of that century, and to compare the female characters based on Goldoni’s and Lessing’s works.

    ger: Mit der Herrschaft von Königin Victoria und dem parallel verlaufenden Phänomen der Industriellen Revolution hielten zahlreiche Erneuerungen, die beinahe alle Bereiche des sozialen Lebens betrafen, in England Einzug. Aber in Zeiten rapider Veränderung wurde dennoch ein bestimmter gesellschaftlicher Aspekt aufrechterhalten: die niedrige Stellung der Frau in der Gesellschaft. Die Ungerechtigkeiten gegenüber Frauen, die ihren Ursprung im Wesentlichen in der patriarchalen Gesellschaftsstruktur hatten, wurden natürlich auch in der zeitgenössischen Literatur aufgegriffen. Bemerkenswerterweise war ein Großteil der weiblichen Schriftstellerinnen entschlossen, die Formen an Unterdrückung, die vielen Frauen widerfuhr, literarisch aufzuzeigen und zu kritisieren. In zwei (Bildungs-) Romanen der Autorin Charlotte Brontë kommen diese Bestrebungen besonders zur Geltung. Sowohl Jane Eyre als auch Villette stellen beide eine Protagonistin in den Mittelpunkt, die mit den Bürden des damaligen Patriarchats zu kämpfen hat. In dieser Diplomarbeit soll veranschaulicht werden, wie die beiden Heldinnen, Jane Eyre und Lucy Snowe, versuchen, ihrem auferlegten „Schatten-Dasein“ zu entkommen. Des Weiteren soll analysiert werden, auf welche Weise und in welchem Ausmaß soziale und geschlechtsbedingte Einschränkungen die Persönlichkeitsbildung der beiden Heldinnen in Jane Eyre und Villette beeinflussen. Denn obwohl beide Hauptcharaktere sehr ähnlichen Bedingungen ausgesetzt sind, unterscheidet sich ihre Bewältigung der Hürden signifikant. eng: The reign of Queen Victorian and the contemporaneously proceeding phenomenon of the Industrial Revolution were accompanied by reforms which affected almost every area of the English social life. Yet, in these times of rapid transformation one particular aspect of society, however, was continuously perpetuated: the low status of the female gender.Naturally, the injustices towards women, which were mainly rooted in the patriarchal structure of society, were dealt with in contemporary literature. Notably, the majority of women writers were determined to illustrate and criticise the implementations of female oppression in their literary works. In two novels (of development) by Charlotte Brontë these endeavours become especially apparent. The stories of Jane Eyre and Villette both centre on a female protagonist, who has to fight the burdens imposed by patriarchy. The aim of this diploma thesis is to demonstrate how the two heroines, Jane Eyre and Lucy Snowe, attempt to escape their predestined “shadow-world”. Furthermore, it will be analysed how and to what extent social and gender boundaries influence the character formation of the protagonists in Jane Eyre and Villette. Because although both main characters are faced with similar conditions, their handling of the situation differs significantly.

    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit befasst sich mit ausgewählten, zeitgenössischen – seit dem Jahr 2000 veröffentlichten – australischen Kurzgeschichten. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Rolle der Frau in diesen Geschichten zu prüfen und zu definieren. Ein wichtiges Kapitel der Arbeit befasst sich mit dem Verständnis der australischen Kultur und geht näher auf die koloniale Vergangenheit und auf für den thematischen Fokus der Arbeit wichtige gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Entwicklungen ein. Ein weiterer Abschnitt widmet sich der australischen Literaturgeschichte und ebnet damit der nachfolgenden Analyse den Weg. Diese befasst sich mit folgenden Aspekten: Mädchen und Buben, Frauen und das Zuhause, Die Loslösung von traditionellen Rollenverteilungen und Aborigine Frauen. Die Diplomarbeit zeigt, dass eine Männerdominanz nach wie vor – nicht nur in der australischen Literaturszene – sondern auch in der australischen Gesellschaft überwiegt. Zugleich aber zeigt sich eine Veränderung in eine Richtung, die eine weniger voreingenommene Haltung gegenüber Frauen und Randgruppen – wie Aborigines – erkennen lässt. eng: This thesis deals with selected works of Australian short fiction published since 2000. Its aim is to explore and define the roles of women in these stories. An entire chapter is devoted to the understanding of Australian culture, elaborating on Australia’s colonial past and its development since. Additionally, important concepts are explained, which are often featured in Australian literature and are thus relevant to this thesis. A third chapter is devoted to Australia’s literary history paving the way for the analysis, which focuses on four aspects: ‘Girls and Boys’, ‘Women and the Home’, ‘Breaking Free from Traditional Roles’ and ‘Aboriginal Women’. The thesis shows that a male dominance still prevails, not only in Australia’s literary scene, but also in its society. It can, however, be said that a shift towards a less unprejudiced view on marginal groups, such as women and Aboriginal people has taken place. Unfortunately, however, the traditional gender script still dominates Australia’s contemporary short fiction.
