The end of the eighteenth century, an age of political and cultural crisis particularly in France, saw a shift in the meaning of belief. Simply put, a break in continuity occurred between the old, religious and a new, literary reading of Scripture. Michel Despland selects five writers who were caught up in this new reading of the old religious text and who came to write about religion in innovative ways: Jean-Jacques Roussean, François-René de Chateaubriand, Charles Nodier, Alfred de Vigny, and Gérard de Nerval. Their use of the autobiographical voice, and of a range of literary devices that encouraged the distanciation of readers from what they read, brought about a profound transmutation of religious writing. The old code of orthodoxy -- what was traditionally believed and socially confirmed -- was replaced with a more readable, personal text. The five writers treated by Despland helped shape a broader definition of belief, on that included individual sensibility. The works they produced are, in a sense, new religious texts. They did not just restate or reinterpret the code, but achieved a new kind of narrative, which has become dominant in the modern era and has shaped individual relationships to all codes

Those who follow current trends in Canadian literature are aware that many of its most exciting and challenging new formats are coming from women writers of Quebec. Patricia Smart studies the historical roots of this development in her study of gender differences in Quebec literature. She offers a feminist perspective on 100 years of writing by both women and men, and argues that it is the women who have modified or subverted the traditions. This new work is her own translation of her study that won the 1988 Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction, Ecrire dans la maison du père: L'émergence du féminin dans la tradition littéraire du Québec. Smart begins with a feminist reading of Laure Conan's Angéline de Montbrun, the only major novel written by a woman in nineteenth-century Quebec, and moves on to close readings of other classic works, from the novel of the land to postmodern and feminist works of the present era. The Quebec literary tradition is not only 'his story' of the national dilemma. There is another telling, Smart concludes, in a different voice, from a different perspective, by women writers and by female characters in the works by men. Smart proposes a radically new interpretation of Quebec literature, one that includes that voice, that other perspective. For when they are listened to on their own terms, and not according to criteria based on men's writing practices, the voices of women writers and characters point to a way out of the female tradition of alienation and violence and to the possibility of a habitable future

Since Julia Kristeva first coined the term 'intertextuality,' explanations of the way literature incorporates other literature have produced few distinctions and much obscurity. In contrast, Allan H. Pasco's Allusion looks at the way allusion works in specific fictions and how it affects the process of reading. Drawing from a wide range of French authors, including Flaubert, Stendhal, Proust, Balzac, Zola, Sartre, and Robbe-Grillet, Pasco uses a number of examples to show how allusions work, how texts integrate other texts to create new metaphorical constructs. The text being read reminds us of another text, and the two texts come together to create an image (or text) quite different from either of the constituent texts. While distinguishing allusion from other forms of intertextuality like irony, satire, plagiarism, and imitation, Pasco follows a straightforward logic from the uncomplicated to the complicated, from the simple to the complex. What he calls parallel allusions serve to contrast with other devices and to clarify the way allusion functions. He discusses how the perception of irony may distort understanding, and he illustrates how allusion can illuminate a theme and render a feeling palpable. A discussion of 'allusive complex' considers the way a set of parallel allusions work together to create something that differs significantly from both the text being read and the works it refers to. The device appears even more complicated when authors call on it set up oppositions, in some cases to imply that the work in hand might end different from the older text. The potential allusion remains as unlimited as the creative minds of authors, but the pattern, as Pasco demonstrates, remains simple and straightforward

Challenging traditional histories of the nineteenth-century French lyric, Laurence Porter maintains that from 1851 to 1875 Symbolism constituted neither a movement nor a system, but rather represented a crisis of confidence in the powers of poetry as a communicative act. The Crisis of French Symbolism offers a provocative reinterpretation of the four acknowledged masters of Symbolist poetry: Baudelaire, Verlaine, Rimbaud, and Mallarmé

From Proust to Beckett, from Blanchot to Derrida from Freud to Lacan, and from Lévi-Strauss to René Girard, all of our theories of modernity have been predicated upon a nostalgia for the real. In this lively and perceptive diagnosis of the malaise of contemporary theorists, Josué Harari interprets the French Enlightenment in terms of the relationship between theory and the imaginary, and explores the paradox by which theories that purport to describe the real lack any dimension of reality.Through readings of texts by some of the progenitors of influential modem theories, Harari explores the working strategies of the imaginary. In particular, he illuminates the founding moment, an instant of personal crisis for the author, during which a theory is infused by a fictional scenario: Montesquieu's "phantasm" of the body, resulting in his theory of government; Rousseau's narcissistic delirium in Emile, resulting in his theory of education; the theory of psychoanalysis, resulting from Freud's unconscious motives for choosing the Oedipal theory over the seduction theory of neurosis; and the theory of structural anthropology, generated by a psychodrama in Tristes Tropiques which Harari reads as a symptom of Lévi-Strauss's anguish when he is confronted with reality. Two striking chapters on Sade at the center of the book reveal the operation of the theoretical imaginary in libertine discourse.Scenarios of the Imaginary will find a wide audience among students and scholars of French literature, particularly of the eighteenth century, and of contemporary French thought, and among comparativists, literary theorists, anthropologists, and historians

In this lively and insightful book, Peter Cryle reconsiders canonical French erotic literature of the last three hundred years, particularly that of the eighteenth century. Through close readings of works by Sade, Crébillon, Nerciat, and Restif, among others, he explores the dynamics of canon formation as he shows that classical erotic narratives-while they are certainly all about sex-are more about its form than its experience

Challenging the view that a critical sense of history is missing from the Enlightenment, Suzanne Gearhart links the works of Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, and Rosseau with the inquiry into the boundary between literature and history in contemporary critical discourse. She considers the theories of Levi-Strauss, Foucault, Althusser, Genette, White, de Man, and Derrida in order to develop a critical approach to fiction and history and to reveal that investigations into the fo undations of historical knowledge, and specifically into what distinguishes hsitory from fiction, were central to the Enlightenment. This book questions many assumptions basic to contemporary criticism by establishing a dialogue between major theorists and Enlightenment figures. It challenges certitudes of fiction and literature by examining the historicity of language, form, and literature itself, redefining history to show its crucial relevance to literary studies and opening historiography to the insights of literary theory.Suzanne Gearhart is Associate Professor of Literature at the University of California, San Diego.Originally published in 1984.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Polemic and Literature Surrounding the French Wars of Religion demonstrates that literature and polemic interacted constantly in sixteenth-century France, constructing ideological frameworks that defined the various groups to which individuals belonged and through which they defined their identities. Contributions explore both literary texts (prose, poetry, and theater) and more intentionally polemical texts that fall outside of the traditional literary genres. Engaging the continuous casting and recasting of opposing worldviews, this collection of essays examines literature's use of polemic and polemic's use of literature as seminal intellectual developments stemming from the religious and social turmoil that characterized this period in France

It has long been the custom to condemn eighteenth-century French poetry outright as generally unworthy of attention. However, in keeping with a recent change of attitude towards this vast and diverse body of literature, Professor Finch here undertakes to isolate a certain group of poets, belonging to the first half of the century, who may appropriately be called individualistes and who are in various ways characteristic of a definite and important trend of their time. The authors he has chosen were selected from the larger group of individualists because each provides, in addition to his poems, a complete statement of his own conception of poetry and of that conception which is common to the group as a whole. Since the works treated are comparatively unfamiliar the author has considered them from a historical and an analytical as well as a critical point of view. In addition he has devoted three special chapters to a literary historian (Evrard Titon du Tillet) and to three critical theorists (Jean-Baptiste Dubos, Yves-Marie André, and Charles Batteux) whose contemporary writings, while they may or may not have influenced the poets here examined, support, reflect, or confirm their ideas and practice. Texts of these poets are not easily available and the numerous representative "ations from the poems given in this book will be welcomed by the reader
