    ger: Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit den vielfältigen Darstellungen des Propheten Muhammad in der englischen Literatur von der Zeit der Angelsachsen bis in die Gegenwart. Anhand zahlreicher Primärquellen aus den jeweiligen Jahrhunderten wird hier zum ersten Mal der Versuch unternommen, die Repräsentation Muhammads in der englischen Literatur sowohl chronologisch als auch systematisch zu erfassen und zu untersuchen. Dabei tritt er in einer Reihe von politischen, sozialen als auch religiösen Kontexten auf und spielt eine wesentliche Rolle in der Herausbildung nationaler Identitäten und Wertvorstellungen. Bedingt durch historische Gegebenheiten wie etwa das Vordringen der Muslime in Europa, die Kreuzzüge, die Reformation, die englischen Bürgerkriege, die Aufklärung und imperiale Interessen, erfuhr Muhammad so über Jahrhunderte hinweg unterschiedliche Umdeutungen seiner ihm zugeordneten Rolle in England. Die damit einhergehenden Darstellungen spiegeln dabei nationale, politische sowie religiöse Umwälzungen wider, die weniger um ein historisch korrektes Abbild des Propheten bemüht sind, sondern vielmehr der eignen Identitätsstiftung dienen. Dabei kristallisieren sich zahlreiche, spezifisch englische Darstellungsweisen heraus, die vorwiegend negativer Natur sind, mitunter aber auch gemäßigte wie auch positive Repräsentationen zulassen. So tritt der Prophet einerseits als Götze, Häretiker, Monarch, und machtbesessener Kriegsherr auf. Andererseits erscheint Muhammad aber auch als weiser Herrscher, Held, Genie und echter Prophet, der die Menschheit von irrationalen christlichen Dogmen befreit. Diese Diplomarbeit gibt diesen Interpretationen Raum und erläutert sie in ihrem jeweiligen historischen Kontext. Darüber hinaus zeigt sie auf, dass die von Edward Saids aufgestellten Theorien zum Vorhandensein eines konstanten Überlegenheitsgefühls gegenüber dem Orient in der englischen Literatur anhand historischer Gegebenheiten und Texten in Teilen einer Revidierung bedürfen. eng: This diploma thesis explores the diverse representations of the Prophet Muhammad in English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present. Considering a substantial number of primary sources, the thesis stands out as the first ever attempt to reconstruct and systematically examine the representation of Muhammad in English literature. The thesis shows that Muhammad appears in a variety of political, social, and religious contexts and played an essential role in the development of England’s national identity and values. Due to historical circumstances such as the advance of Muslims in Europe, the Crusades, the Reformation, the English civil wars, the Enlightenment and imperial interests, Muhammad's biography experienced various reinterpretations depending on his assigned role in England. Thus, numerous and often typically English forms of representing Muhammad emerged. These images were only marginally concerned with a historically accurate depiction of the prophet. Instead, they reflect national, political, as well as religious upheavals in which Muhammad could be employed to address issues closer to home. Although these images were predominantly negative, historical contexts sometimes allowed for moderate and, in some cases, even positive depictions of the Prophet. In the works of some authors, the Prophet appeared as an idol, heretic, monarch, and warlord obsessed with worldly power. Others, however, saw Muhammad as a wise ruler, hero, genius, and true prophet who freed humanity from irrational Christian dogmas. This diploma thesis gives space to these interpretations and examines them in their respective historical context. In addition, it shows that theories put forward by Edward Said about the existence of a constant sense of Western superiority over the Islamic world require a re-evaluation based on new insights gained from studying historical documents and English literary texts.
