The catalogue is the first step towards a systematic description of the manuscripts of the Wycliffite Bible, one of the most influential medieval English works. The Bible is the first complete translation of the Vulgate in English, produced at the end of the 14th century by the followers of the Oxford theologian John Wyclif. In spite of being condemned and banned within twenty five years of its appearance, it became the most widely disseminated medieval English text.

The catalogue contains detailed descriptions of all (64 in total) manuscripts of the Wycliffite Bible in Oxford collections (the Bodleian and college libraries). This is a substantial part of the whole corpus: 250 manuscripts of the Bible survive and Oxford has the largest number of copies in any single location. The descriptions are subdivided into sections covering textual contents, decoration, dialect, physical makeup and binding of each manuscript, and are accompanied by bibliographies. The descriptions are preceded by an introduction with a discussion of the manuscript tradition of the Wycliffite Bible and the findings resulting from the study of Oxford copies. The catalogue also contains several appendices illustrating important features of the manuscripts

Jon Mee explores the popular democratic movement that emerged in the London of the 1790s in response to the French Revolution. Central to the movement's achievement was the creation of an idea of 'the people' brought into being through print and publicity. Radical clubs rose and fell in the face of the hostile attentions of government. They were sustained by a faith in the press as a form of 'print magic,' but confidence in the liberating potential of the printing press was interwoven with hard-headed deliberations over how best to animate and represent the people. Ideas of disinterested rational debate were thrown into the mix with coruscating satire, rousing songs, and republican toasts. Print personality became a vital interface between readers and print exploited by the cast of radicals returned to history in vivid detail by Print, Publicity, and Popular Radicalism. Mind, Body, Motion, Matter investigates the relationship between the eighteenth century's two predominant approaches to the natural world - mechanistic materialism and vitalism - in the works of leading British and French writers such as Daniel Defoe, William Hogarth, Laurence Sterne, the third Earl of Shaftesbury and Denis Diderot. Focusing on embodied experience and the materialization of thought in poetry, novels, art, and religion, the literary scholars in this collection offer new and intriguing readings of these canonical authors. Informed by contemporary currents such as new materialism, cognitive studies, media theory, and post-secularism, their essays demonstrate the volatility of the core ideas opened up by materialism and the possibilities of an aesthetic vitalism of form. Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability—at the level of literature, history, and politics—to grasp the scale and violence of climate change. The extreme nature of today’s climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned to other genres. In the writing of history, too, the climate crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications; Ghosh shows that the history of the carbon economy is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements. Ghosh ends by suggesting that politics, much like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence—a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer’s summons to confront the most urgent task of our time.

Im zweiten Teil werden vier zeitgenössische Romane mit autistischen Erzählfiguren analysiert: Mark Haddons The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2003), Jonathan Safran Foers Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005), Jodi Picoults House Rules (2010) und Francisco X. Storks Marcelo in the Real World (2009). In recent years, the incidence of autism spectrum disorder as well as the public interest in the condition has increased. This trend is reflected in a growing number of novels that employ autistic narrators. The success of such novels is partly due to the way the stories are conveyed by the narrators, which in many cases happens in the form of an unreliable account. Unreliable narration is a literary concept that is based on a discrepancy between the narrator’s account of the literary events and a second version of the story, which the reader has to establish for him- or herself with the help of additional information. An overview of the concept of unreliable narration as well as a description of autism spectrum disorder is provided in the first part of this thesis, while the second part is dedicated to investigating four contemporary works of fiction that employ autistic narrators. These works are Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (2003), Jonathan Safran Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005), Jodi Picoult’s House Rules (2010), and Francisco X. Stork’s Marcelo in the Real World (2009). The analysis focuses on the different signs of unreliability that the narrators of these novels display, including deviations from literary norms as well as linguistic signs and discrepancies in regards to characterisation. During the course of the analysis it becomes evident that the narrators all exhibit varying degrees of unreliability, which stem from limited perspectives and fulfill various functions, most importantly creating comic effects and inspiring sympathy in the readers. Furthermore, the survey reveals that while the representations of the autistic condition in the novels are partly based on stereotypes, the narrations still offer valuable insights into the autistic mind.

The master's thesis examines the way the supernatural as the irrational Other of scientifically-grounded Western philosophy enters detective fiction, a genre which traditionally centres on a detective solving a mystery through scientific-rational analysis and thus arriving at the ultimate truth. The ‘rules of the game’ of classical detective fiction proposed by early 20th-century authors and critics state that the mystery must have a rational solution and that no supernatural agency may be involved; the supernatural thus serves only as a red herring, an illusion to be dismantled by the detective. And yet, since the 19th century the supernatural has entered the genre of detective fiction in a variety of ways, with the number of detective stories featuring the supernatural rising significantly in recent decades. The thesis briefly explores the supernatural, examines the close connection between detective fiction and the tradition of Gothic fiction, and traces the intrusions of the supernatural into the detective fiction genre. Then, drawing on Cawelti's and Hoppenstand's theories of popular formula fiction, Brunner's analysis of detective stories as epistemological allegories (where the detective stands for the ideal intellect most suited to gain knowledge of the truth) as well as Todorov's theory of the fantastic, three detective novels featuring the supernatural in three distinct ways – as either illusion (Agatha Christie's Pale Horse), fact (Ben Aaronovitch's The Rivers of London) or ontologically undeterminable (Tony Hillerman's The Blessing Way) – are analysed in terms of: a) the characteristics and aspects of the supernatural and b) the detectives and their methods of approaching the supernatural. Thus, the implied worldview and the functions of the supernatural in each (type of) detective story are determined and the ways in which detective stories featuring the supernatural reflect contemporary cultural worldviews and practices analysed.
