This supplement to the Deutsches Theater-Lexikon amplifies and extends Volumes I-IV (A-T, appeared between 1953 and 1998). Articles have been re-edited with an emphasis on the 20th century, and personalities of German-language theater who were not previously included have been newly added. The lexicon contains bio-bibliographic information about playwrights, composers, theatrical directors, producers, actors, singers, set and costume designers

Front Matter -- Jesuit Theatre, Poetics and Andreas Friz -- Latin Text and Translation -- Introduction to Friz’s Analyses of Racine’s Plays -- Latin Text -- Bibliography -- Index of Personal Names. In Andreas Friz’s Letter on tragedies (ca. 1741-1744) Nienke Tjoelker offers insight into the Jesuit school theatre of the eighteenth century. Commonly ignored by scholars, who assume that by then Jesuit theatre was disappearing and of poor quality, it appears to be very much alive and interacting with contemporary vernacular theatre. Tjoelker places Friz's poetics in its historical and literary context in an extensive introduction and presents an edition with translation. She investigates Friz's focus on the imitation of French classical writers, such as Jean Racine (1639-1699) and Pierre Corneille (1606-1684). Friz criticised his colleagues for their excessive use of multimedia ornaments, which hindered the correct application of the three classical unities and verisimilitude

The Plough and the Stars" leicht ersichtlich. The Silver Tassie & Frank McGuinness - Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching towards the Somme, Sean O'Casey - The Plough and the Stars & Dennis Johnston - The Scythe and the Sunset, Frank McGuinness - Carthaginians & Brian Friel - The Freedom of the City.Die aus diesen Detailanalysen gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden anschließend zusammengefasst und ein Vergleich der verschiedenen dargestellten Sichtweisen vorgenommen. eng: Literature, theater and politics have always influenced each other in a variety of contexts, however, this influence is particularly apparent when it comes to what is often referred to as the "Irish Literary Revival" as promoted by such important authors as W.B. Yeats or Lady Gregory. Not only has the Irish National Theater had an important role to play in the Irish Freedom Movement and the creation of an Irish Free State, the Republic of Ireland, but it has also payed tribute to such problems as World War One or the Northern Ireland Troubles. Playwrights such as Sean O'Casey, Frank McGuinness, Dennis Johnston or Brian Friel are using the means of the unique medium of drama to convey their political messages and to reflect on 20th century Irish history. This thesis will examine, explore and illustrate how the above mentioned playwrights reflect on and deal with important aspects of Irish history, such as World War I, the Easter Rising or Bloody Sunday in Northern Ireland. The purpose of this thesis is to highlight the different points of view dramatists take on important historical developments and events and to illustrate how these different attitudes and positions are represented in a number of their plays. For this purpose each of the three above listed historical cornerstones of Irish contemporary history will at first be reflected on as such. The plays treating with these events will then be compared and put in context with both, the actual historical facts as well as the other plays dealing with the very same topic. For this purpose the following plays will be evaluated and compared: Sean O'Casey's The Silver Tassie & Frank McGuinness's Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching towards the Somme, Sean O'Casey's The Plough and the Stars & Dennis Johnston's The Scythe and the Sunset, Frank McGuinness's Carthaginians & Brian Friel's The Freedom of the City.

In The End of Satisfaction, Heather Hirschfeld recovers the historical specificity and the conceptual vigor of the term "satisfaction" during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Focusing on the term’s significance as an organizing principle of Christian repentance, she examines the ways in which Shakespeare and his contemporaries dramatized the consequences of its re- or de-valuation in the process of Reformation doctrinal change. The Protestant theology of repentance, Hirschfeld suggests, underwrote a variety of theatrical plots "to set things right" in a world shorn of the prospect of "making enough" (satisfacere).Hirschfeld’s semantic history traces today’s use of "satisfaction"—as an unexamined measure of inward gratification rather than a finely nuanced standard of relational exchange—to the pressures on legal, economic, and marital discourses wrought by the Protestant rejection of the Catholic sacrament of penance (contrition, confession, satisfaction) and represented imaginatively on the stage. In so doing, it offers fresh readings of the penitential economies of canonical plays including Dr. Faustus, The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Merchant of Venice, and Othello; considers the doctrinal and generic importance of lesser-known plays including Enough Is as Good as a Feast and Love’s Pilgrimage; and opens new avenues into the study of literature and repentance in early modern England

In the first in-depth study of the interconnected relationships among public theatre, custodial institutions, and women in early modern Spain, Margaret E. Boyle explores the contradictory practices of rehabilitation enacted by women both on and off stage. Pairing historical narratives and archival records with canonical and non-canonical theatrical representations of women’s deviance and rehabilitation, Unruly Women argues that women’s performances of penitence and punishment should be considered a significant factor in early modern Spanish life.Boyle considers both real-life sites of rehabilitation for women in seventeenth-century Madrid, including a jail and a magdalen house, and women onstage, where she identifies three distinct representations of female deviance: the widow, the vixen, and the murderess. Unruly Women explores these archetypal figures in order to demonstrate the ways a variety of playwrights comment on women’s non-normative relationships to the topics of marriage, sex, and violence

"As a serious drama set in an ordinary middle-class home, Ibsen's A Doll's House established a new politics of the interior that was to have a lasting impact upon twentieth-century drama. In this innovative study, Nicholas Grene traces the changing forms of the home on the stage through nine of the greatest of modern plays and playwrights. From Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard through to Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire, domestic spaces and personal crises have been employed to express wider social conditions and themes of class, gender and family. In the later twentieth century and beyond, the most radically experimental dramatists created their own challenging theatrical interiors, including Beckett in Endgame, Pinter in The Homecoming and Parks in Topdog/Underdog. Grene analyses the full significance of these versions of domestic spaces to offer fresh insights into the portrayal of the naturalistic environment in modern drama"--

The romantic stage: A many-sided mirror' examines late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British theatre and drama with the conviction that they made an essential contribution to the aesthetic and ideological complexity of the British culture of the day. The essays collected in this volume seek to capture the richness and diversity of British Romantic theatre and drama and situate them at the centre of the multiple, and often radical, literary and social transformations that the Age brought about. The volume is divided into four main sections: "Contextualizing Romantic Theatre and Drama", "Drama across the Arts", "Staging the Gothic (Fear on Stage)" and "Texts, Theories and Contexts". Each section is dedicated to a particular aspect of English Romantic drama examined through interdisciplinary, international and inter-generic perspectives
