Marcel Duchamp hatte mit seinen Readymades den Kunstbetrieb in eine Debatte über In- und Exklusion von Alltagsdingen in die ‚Hochkunst‘ verstrickt. Duchamps Kunst-Erweiterung führte zu einer explosionsartigen Vermehrung von Kunstgegenständen und -begriffen, die bis in die Gegenwart anhält. Ferner provozieren Bilder und Objekte aus Nicht-Kunst-Bereichen mit eigener Tradition das Kunstsystem, indem sie Kunstkriterien adaptieren. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes handeln von Provokationen und Interventionen, den Transfers bzw. Vermischungen der Bild- und Objektkulturen und erforschen Bilder, Objekte und Aktionen in ihren kulturellen Kontexten, um dem sich in Auflösung befindenden Kunstsystem auf den Grund zu gehen Images are not born as art. It is characterized by a paradox, since the works only seem to live. But what is also reflected in the fascination with almost living works at the same time is the impossibility of drawing rigid lines of demarcation between the living and the dead. Here, art explores what also occupied natural philosophy at the time in an experimental way. The book examines the transitions between living and dead in case studies, for instance, based on early tombs, anatomical renderings, and sculptural monochromy as well as on the history of coloring, Vasari’s teleology, Michelangelo's non-finito, and Titian's portraits. What come into play are eroticism, monetary theory, the luster of eyes, and still-lifes, and also visual poetry, princely triumphal processions, and light and sculpture in the Baroque „Lebendigkeit" ist der dominante Topos in Kunst und Kunstdiskurs der Frühen Neuzeit. Er ist durch ein Paradox gekennzeichnet, denn die Werke leben nur scheinbar. In der Faszinationskraft beinah lebendiger Werke spiegelt sich aber die Unmöglichkeit, starre Grenzlinien zwischen tot und lebendig zu ziehen. Die Kunst erkundet hier experimentell, was auch die zeitgenössische Naturphilosophie beschäftigt. Das Buch untersucht die Übergänge zwischen lebendig und tot in Fallstudien, etwa zu frühen Grabmälern, anatomischen Darstellungen und skulpturaler Monochromie; zur Koloritgeschichte, Vasaris Teleologie, Michelangelos non-finito und Tizians Porträts. Es geht um Erotik, Geldtheorie, Augenglanz und Stilleben, um Bildgedichte, fürstliche Triumpheinzüge und Licht und Skulptur im Barock

Proceeding from the digital as a seemingly universal notational substrate, the first volume of Das Neue Alphabet (The New Alphabet) series tracks the interplay between these two tendencies by looking at a series of examples: the relationship between binary code and Leibniz’s philosophy of Monadology, the technological and cosmological aspects of non­ Western writing systems, which are antithetical to a monolithic understanding of language, and the power of the Alphabet Song to teach children the alphabet, its ordering principle cloaked in poetic form.     Phänomene des Mehrdeutigen sind für die Kunst bestimmend, faszinierend und anspruchsvoll. Herausfordernd sind zugleich die vieldeutigen Strukturen in global entgrenzter Kultur, sozialen Ordnungen und Identitätsvorstellungen. Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe! Aujourd’hui, beaucoup d’entre eux affirment faire de la recherche et s’avancent sur les terres de l’histoire, de la sociologie ou de l’anthropologie. Le parcours de Ferran Adrià, tour à tour cuisinier du célèbre restaurant El Bulli, représentant de l’Espagne à la Documenta de Kassel en 2007 et directeur d’un centre de recherche à l’université de Barcelone, est emblématique de ce double processus de dé-définition : de l’art d’une part, et de dérégulation des sciences humaines de l’autre. Qu’est-ce que l’art et la science ont à gagner ou à perdre dans ce rapprochement ? Faut-il s’inquiéter pour la survie des normes de vérité dans le monde académique ? Carole Talon-Hugon propose une mise en perspective historique et critique de cet état de confusion contemporain lié au phénomène de « désartification » de l’art, mais aussi à une atmosphère intellectuelle proclamant l’effacement des frontières du vrai et du faux, du fait et de la fiction, de l’idéologie et du savoir.
