    Main description: In sehr verschiedener Weise haben die Werke der antiken Autoren auf die späteren Jahrhunderte gewirkt - verschieden die einzelnen Autoren, verschieden in den einzelnen Ländern, verschieden in den einzelnen Epochen, verschieden hinsichtlich Inhalt oder Form. Die vorliegende Aufsatzsammlung geht vor allem dem Einfluss nach, den die Reden Ciceros auf die rhetorische Theorie und Praxis und damit auf Sprache, Stiltheorie und literarische Gestaltung in den romanischen Ländern (Kapitel I: Italien und Frankreich; Kapitel II: Spanien; Kapitel III bei Georg von Trapezunt) und in Deutschland (Kap. VI und VII; Kapitel VII bei Heinrich Bebel) im fünfzehnten und sechzehnten Jahrhundert ausgeübt haben. Im fünften Kapitel wird zum Vergleich der Einfluss des jüngeren Seneca im sechzehnten Jahrhundert miteinbezogen, im vierten Kapitel der Einfluss Quintilians auf die rhetorischen und pädagogischen Ideen des fünfzehnten Jahrhunderts dargestellt, im zehnten der Ciceros auf die Johannes Sturms. Das neunte Kapitel ist den Neuerungen gewidmet, denen Melanchthon die rhetorischen Theorien der Antike und die mittelalterlichen Predigtlehren unterwirft, sowie dem vielfältigen Einfluss dieser Neuerungen, das elfte ergänzend den antiken und mittelalterlichen Traditionen, die im Stadtlob Lodovico Guicciardini's fortleben. Die früher schon veröffentlichten Aufsätze sind alle unter Berücksichtigung der neuesten Literatur überarbeitet, einige völlig umgestaltet und wesentlich ergänzt, und der Band ist durch ein ausführliches Register erschlossen

    How is the history of antiquity told, and what is the role of narrativity in transforming the image of antiquity? This volume addresses the highly charged intersection between experience, narrative, and history that may be apprehended when we consider the great diversity of narrative practices in literature, the visual arts, and historiography. In this study, narrativity is conceptualized as a particular way of inventing meaning by creating coherency through retrospective reorganization. Particularly in relation to antiquity, narratives may be used to establish historical continuity by filling in caesuras and by creating transitions and connections. Individual chapters explore transformations in the imagery, content, stories, and narrative modes of antiquity as they were appropriated in medieval and early modern chronicles, images, and epics. They investigate the forms, modes, and functions of such appropriation and examine the conditions that help explain the particular narrative transformations occurring in the different genres and media that are examined Wie wird Antikes erzählt und welche Rolle spielt Narrativität für die Transformationen von Antike? Das Thema des Bandes eröffnet ein Spannungsfeld von Ereignis, Erzählung und Geschichte, das sich in den unterschiedlichsten Gebrauchsformen von Narrativität in der Literatur, den bildenden Künsten und der Geschichtsschreibung fassen lässt. Narrativität wird hier jeweils als eine Form von Sinnstiftung durch die Herstellung von Kohärenz, als ein retrospektives Ordnen aufgefasst. Gerade in der Bezugnahme auf die Antike können Narrative zudem gerade dadurch historische Kontinuitäten schaffen, dass sie Zäsuren narrativ bewältigen, Übergänge und Zusammenhänge schaffen.Die Beiträge untersuchen die Transformationen antiker Motive, Stoffe, Erzählungen und Erzählmodi in ihren mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Aneignungen, in Chronik, Bild und Epos. Dabei wird nach den Formen, Modi und Funktionen dieser Aneignungen und nach den Bedingungen dafür gefragt, dass die untersuchten Gattungen und Medien jeweils spezifische narrative Transformationen hervorbringen

    In the early modern period, the culture of Rome, with Virgil as its greatest figure, was the model for emulation. The age of Louis XIV compared itself to the Augustan age, and Dryden hailed Virgil as 'my Divine Master.' But in 18th-century Europe, a general shift occurred in favor of Greece, a trend that was most pronounced in Germany. Winckelmann, the spokesman for philhellenism, extolled Greek art and dismissed all Roman art as derivative and Virgil as second rate and incapable of understanding true beauty. Yet he nonetheless remained indebted to Virgil for his view of Greek art, although he failed to recognize it. The export of Winckelmann's new view of Virgil and more generally Roman culture - shared to varying extents by Lessing, Herder, Goethe, and the brothers Schlegel - to the rest of Europe in the 19th century, particularly to the English-speaking world via Coleridge and Matthew Arnold] soon made it the reigning dogma: indeed it formed the point of departure for Virgil scholarship in the 20th century. This, however, did not prevent German poets from using Virgil, although neither they nor later scholars called attention to it. Virgil became a repressed muse, and has a continued, unexamined presence in the epic and idyll of Klopstock, Wieland, Goethe, and Novalis. Geoffrey Atherton's comparative investigation of the relation of modernity to antiquity through Virgil and his twofold reception represents a new perspective on this issue.     Through his reading of primary and secondary classical sources, as well as his theoretical writings, Richard Wagner developed a Hegelian-inspired theory linking the evolution of classical Greek politics and poetry. This book demonstrates how, by turning theory into practice, Wagner used this evolutionary paradigm to shape the music and the libretto of the Ring cycle. Foster describes how each of the Ring's operas represents a particular phase of Greek poetic and political development: Das Rheingold and Die Walküre create epic national identity in its earlier and later stages respectively; Siegfried expresses lyric personal identity; and Götterdämmerung destructively culminates with a tragi-comedy about civic identity. This study sees the Greeks through the lens of those scholars whose work influenced Wagner most, focusing on epic, lyric, and comedy, as well as Greek tragedy.     Das Übersetzen aus dem Lateinischen ist wichtigster Lehr- und Prüfungsgegenstand, und zwar überall dort, wo diese Sprache vermittelt wird. Auch kommt dem Übersetzen aus dem Lateinischen in der Wissenschaft eine immer größere Bedeutung zu: Überhaupt kann nur bei wenigen die Fähigkeit vorausgesetzt werden, das Lateinische flüssig zu lesen. Und vor allem lateinische Quellentexte aus Antike, Mittelalter und Neuzeit werden überwiegend in übersetzter Form rezipiert. Trotz dieser enormen und immer weiter wachsenden Bedeutung der Übersetzung aus dem Lateinischen fehlen moderne translationswissenschaftliche Ansätze für diese Sprache. Der vorliegende Sammelband versucht, dieses Terrain aus unterschiedlichen Richtungen zu erschließen: Zunächst werden translationswissenschaftliche Grundsatzfragen gestellt, dann folgen exemplarische sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche Annäherungen zu Einzelfragen und didaktische Überlegungen, am Ende stehen übersetzungspraktische Erwägungen über Prosa- und Dichtungstexte sowie zweisprachige Ausgaben.
