    How does one create vivid narratives about realms that cannot be experienced before death, such as hell, purgatory, and paradise? This work uses early Jewish texts to reconstruct the narrative process of describing journeys to the beyond, and follows its transformations through different texts - from the Apocryphal Apocalypses of Peter and Paul to the influential medieval narratives of the Visio Tnugdali (Vision of Tnugdalus) and the Tractatus de Purgatorio S. Patricii (Treatise on St. Patrick's Purgatory)

    Main description: The study investigates imaginary libraries in literary works of the 16th and 17th centuries and their status in the context of the history of ideas. Since the invention of printing there had been a headlong increase in the production of texts, accompanied by a corresponding information overload. These were the preconditions required for certain feats of the imagination to become possible in the first place. In the form of thought-experiments, contemporary literary figures and scholars attempted to outline solutions for the urgent problems involved in imposing order on the unmanageable plethora of texts and assuring the progress of knowledge in the face of the untrammeled abundance of factual information

Denn wo dieser Sinn anatomisch zu verorten und wie seine Funktion zu spezifizieren sei, stellt sich in Anbetracht der diskutierten Ansätze vor allem als ein Problem dar. Das zugrundegelegte Korpus umfasst literarische, philosophische und naturkundliche Texte. Diese werden einer Lektüre unterzogen, die unter Rekurs auf systematische Begriffe die Vielschichtigkeit des Gegenstandes auszuloten ermöglicht The study describes the conceptual and metaphorical field relating to what figures in the Enlightenment as the sense of touch/feeling. In so doing it homes in on a phenomenon whose operative and physiological definition is anything but straightforward. The approaches discussed here indicate the problems involved in situating this sense in anatomical terms and specifying its function. The corpus of texts underlying the study is taken from literature, philosophy, and natural history. These are subjected to a reading that makes it possible to examine the complex nature of the issue in question by drawing upon systematic concepts

    Main description: Many comedies are instances of 'money on the stage' and not merely because their subject matter revolves around 'filthy lucre'. Numerous features characteristic of the genre serve to illustrate the social expectations geared to money. This being the case, it is possible to write a genre history of (baroque and Enlightenment) comedy in the form of 'social history on a cultural studies basis'. Proceeding from the homology between development and representation structures in comedy and the way money functions, the study essays a reconstruction of the evolution of the genre with special reference to its interrelations with the evolution of a market society

    Was ist die Schönheit der Literatur? Worin unterscheidet sie sich von anderen Formen des Schönen? Dieses in der europäischen Poetik und Kunsttheorie immer wieder aufgeworfene Problem verfolgt die Studie erstmals im größeren Zusammenhang von der Antike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. In der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Schönen, so zeigt sich, entdeckt und reflektiert die Literaturästhetik auf besondere Weise die Eigenart des literarischen Mediums, die spezifische Materialität und die Darstellungsleistungen der Literatur, aber nicht zuletzt auch das, was sich sprachlicher Vermittlung entzieht What makes a literary work of art beautiful? Ihre Überlebenskraft verdankt sich ihrer Anpassungsfähigkeit: Sie werden Aktualisierungen unterzogen, die ihre Deutungen, die Medien ihrer Verbreitung oder ihren Status in der Erinnerungskultur betreffen können. Mythen sind Formen der Erinnerung, die etwas scheinbar Althergebrachtes erzählen und dabei– ob sie wollen oder nicht– stets Neues hervorbringen Myths have always been with us. Some are constantly being resurrected, some re-emerge in new forms.Their power of survival is due to their adaptability– they undergo updating which can affect their interpretations, the media for their dissemination or their status in the culture of memory. Myths are forms of memory which seemingly tell old stories and in the process– whether intentionally or not– always produce something new. -
