Conceptualizing transnational literature. The nation and beyond -- Transnationalizing literary studies -- What is transnational literature? -- Reading transnational literature. The lay of the land -- Mobility -- Borders -- Migration -- Identity -- History -- Transnational theatre "Transnational Literature: The Basics provides an indispensable overview of this important new field of study and the literature it explores. It concisely describes the various ways in which literature can be understood as being "transnational", explains why scholars in literary studies have become so interested in the topic, and discusses the economic, political, social, and cultural forces that have shaped its development. The book explores a range of contemporary critical approaches to the subject, highlighting how subjects like globalisation, cosmopolitanism, diaspora, history, identity, migration, and decolonization are treated by both scholars in the field and the writers they study. The literary works discussed range across the globe and include fiction, poetry, and drama by writers including Jhumpa Lahiri, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Jenny Erpenbeck, Aleksandar Hemon, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Derek Walcott, Louise Bennett, Xiaolu Guo, Sally Wen Mao, Wole Soyinka, and many more. This survey stresses the range and breadth - but also the intersecting interests - of transnational writing, engaging the variety of subjects it covers and emphasizing the range of literary devices (linguistic, formal, narrative, poetic, and dramatic) it employs. Highlighting the subjects and issues that have become central to fiction in the age of globalization, Transnational Literature: The Basics is an essential read for anyone approaching study of this vibrant area"--

Existentialism: An Introductionprovides an accessible and scholarly introduction to the core ideas of the existentialist tradition. Kevin Aho draws on a wide range of existentialist thinkers in chapters centering on the key themes of freedom, being-in-the-world, alienation, nihilism, anxiety and authenticity. He also addresses important but often overlooked issues in the canon of existentialism, with discussions devoted to the role of embodiment, the movement’s contribution to ethics, politics, and environmental and comparative philosophies, as well as its influence on contemporary psychiatry and psychotherapy. The enduring relevance of existentialism is shown by applying existentialist ideas to contemporary philosophical discussions of interest to a wide audience. The book covers secular thinkers such as Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Nietzsche, Sartre, Camus, and Beauvoir as well as religious authors, such as Buber, Dostoevsky, Marcel, and Kierkegaard. In this engaging and accessible text Aho shows why existentialism cannot be easily dismissed as a moribund or outdated movement. In the aftermath of 'God’s death', existentialist philosophy engages questions with lasting philosophical significance, questions such as 'Who am I?' and 'How should I live?' By showing how existentialism offers insight into what it means to be human, the author illuminates existentialism’s enduring value. Existentialism: An Introductionprovides the ideal introduction for upper level students and anyone interested in knowing more about one of the most vibrant and important areas of philosophy today. Kevin Aho is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Florida Gulf Coast University.

The violence wrought by climate change, toxic drift, deforestation, oil spills, and the environmental aftermath of war takes place gradually and often invisibly. Using the innovative concept of "slow violence" to describe these threats, the author focuses on the inattention we have paid to the attritional lethality of many environmental crises, in contrast with the sensational, spectacle driven messaging that impels public activism today. Slow violence, because it is so readily ignored by a hard charging capitalism, exacerbates the vulnerability of ecosystems and of people who are poor, disempowered, and often involuntarily displaced, while fueling social conflicts that arise from desperation as life sustaining conditions erode. In this book the author examines a cluster of writer/activists affiliated with the environmentalism of the poor in the global South. By approaching environmental justice literature from this transnational perspective, he exposes the limitations of the national and local frames that dominate environmental writing. And by illuminating the strategies these writer/activists deploy to give dramatic visibility to environmental emergencies, he invites his readers to engage with some of the most pressing challenges of our time

"Ways of Re-Thinking Literature creates a unique platform where leading literary thinkers and practitioners provide a multiplicity of views into what literature is today. The texts gathered in this extraordinary collection range from philosophy to poetry, to theatre, to cognitive sciences, to art criticism, fiction, and their authors rank amongst the most significant figures in their fields, in France, the United States and the United Kingdom. Topics covered include an assessment of the role of literary narratives in contemporary writing; new considerations on the novel; a redefinition of the "poetic" factor in poetry and life; and a discussion of how literature engages with contemporary forms of individuality. Under the auspices of literary luminaries Hélène Cixous and the late John Ashbery, these new pieces of writing bring to light contributions by innovative and well-established authors from the English-speaking sphere, as well as never-before-translated prominent new voices in French theory. Featuring original work from some of today's most influential authors, Ways of Re-Thinking Literature is an indispensable tool for anybody interested in the future and possibilities of literature as an endeavour for life, thought, and creativity. With special cover artwork by Rita Ackermann, the volume includes contributions from Emily Apter, Philippe Artières, John Ashbery, Paul Audi, Dodie Bellamy, Tom Bishop, Hélène Cixous, Laurent Dubreuil, Tristan Garcia, Donatien Grau, Stathis Gourgouris, Boris Groys, Shelley Jackson, Wayne Koestenbaum, Camille Laurens, Vanessa Place, Maël Renouard, Peter Schjeldahl, Adam Thirwell, and Camille de Toledo"-- The disappearing avant-garde / Tom Bishop -- The critical life : rethinking biography in an experimental mode / Emily Apter -- What literature can do / Philippe Artières -- Some notes towards a literary conception of literature / Donatien Grau -- The installation as novel / Boris Groys -- History of new novels / Adam Thirlwell -- What becomes of the novel when the gods are coming back / Tristan Garcia -- The varieties of literary experience / Peter Schjeldahl -- Intellection, cognition, contradiction / Laurent Dubreuil -- Heiner Müller's lyric loneliness and the mythical body / Stathis Gourgouris -- The route of the impossible / Paul Audi -- Re-thinking, re-feeling literature / Camille Laurens -- Hoarding as écriture / Dodie Bellamy -- Corpse pose / Wayne Koestenbaum -- The Shelley Jackson vocational school for ghost speakers and hearing-mouth children / Shelley Jackson -- Some fragments / Mael Renouard -- Fictional habitation / Camille de Toledo -- Act two : why I am a destiny / Vanessa Place -- Conclusion : Ay yay! the cry of literature / Helene Cixous

The Ecocriticism Reader is the first collection of its kind, an anthology of classic and cutting-edge writings in the rapidly emerging field of literary ecology. Exploring the relationship between literature and the physical environment, literary ecology is the study of the ways that writing - from novels and folktales to U.S. government reports and corporate advertisements - both reflects and influences our interactions with the natural world. The Ecocriticism Reader is an introduction to the field as well as a source book. It defines ecological literary discourse, sketches its development over the past quarter-century, provides generally appealing and lucidly written examples of the range of ecological approaches to literature, and offers direction for further study through lists of recommended readings, relevant periodicals, and professional organizations.
