L’œuvre de Perec propose, comme celle de Baudelaire, mais sous le couvert, plus immédiatement accessible, d’un inventaire des « espèces d’espaces », l’expérience ascétique d’une suspension – voire d’une sortie – du temps : authentiquement vécue lors du voyage en cargo vers Ellis Island, elle constitue l’aboutissement de La Vie mode d’emploi , dans la révélation finale de l’ instant fatal qui en englobe rétrospectivement toute la fiction, et n’est probablement directement énoncée, presque au terme de l’œuvre, que dans le bref poème « L’Éternité », un des deux textes que Perec dit avoir écrits sans contraintes. C’est pourquoi « Je cherche en même temps l’éternel et l’éphémère », la phrase des Revenentes choisie pour être l’épigraphe du dernier chapitre de La Vie mode d’emploi , est qualifiée par Perec de « peut-être celle que j’aime le plus de tout ce que j’ai écrit ». L’objet de ce livre est donc de considérer dans cette optique l’ensemble des écrits de Georges Perec – La Vie mode d’emploi , bien sûr, mais aussi des textes moins fréquentés (la poésie non contrainte, la prose critique…) – pour construire une lecture cohérente de cette œuvre majeure du XXe siècle. En croisant dans cette perspective les trois catégories du sujet, de l’écriture et du style, on se propose de montrer que la sortie du temps – aussi improbable soit-elle – constitue manifestement, pour Perec, la fin de son écriture, au sens où elle définit l’expérience même procurée par la littérature

In 1980 an exhibition of the Illuminated Manuscripts of René Char held in Paris took the artistic and literary worlds by surprise. It featured illustrations by twenty-eight artists of an array of Char’s hand-written poems. Char’s artistic associations, spanning seven decades, remain remarkable today. Not only was he amply illustrated by those he called his “substantial allies”; the dedicatory poems and prose pieces they inspired, written with revelatory flair, constitute a unique corpus in the history of art and poetic enterprise. This book brings together an exemplary number of the artists Char prized over time: Dali and Kandinsky in the early years; later, Picasso, Braque and Miró; yet later, Vieira da Silva, Nicolas de Staël and Alexandre Galperine. It also considers the poet’s fascination with Corot, Courbet, La Tour, Van Gogh and the cave art of Lascaux

Modernist literature and art have been dominated by a disinterest in mere empirical and social reality and a discontent with habitualized perception and the world-view of convention, reason, and pragmatism. This anti-realistic attitude originated in the epistemological scepticism of the early 20th century which was even radicalized by the advent of the »linguistic turn«, constructivism, postmodernism, and poststructuralism. Yet it would be a gross simplification to describe the 20th century flatly and globally as an age of anti-realism. Especially in its second half many neo-realist movements were launched, and non-Western literatures (e.g. »magic realism«) challenged Western modernity and its constructivist epistemology. Today, we can not only read many texts which might be attributed to a »postmodernist realism« but may even be watching the rise of a post-postmodernist realism. This vast field of research is discussed in a series of theoretical reflections and case studies of selected texts, movies and the internet which geographically embrace Europe, the USA, Africa and Asia. The volume may be of interest for students and scholars of Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, and Media Studies as well as for students and experts in the cultures, authors and artists that are covered in the collection of essays

Ce paria de la République des Lettres bénéficie depuis quelques années d’un regain d’intérêt, ce dont témoignent plusieurs éditions récentes de ses romans. Le moment semble venu de faire le point sur une oeuvre très diversifiée, qui va de la fantaisie délirante de Lamékis au réalisme audacieux de La Mouche , et de dégager du coup quelques nouvelles pistes de recherche, qui touchent, entre autres, à l’histoire de la librairie, aux poétiques du roman d’Ancien Régime et aux arrière-plans politiques insoupçonnés qui se profilent derrière quelques-uns de ses romans

En partant du débat actuel qui met en opposition sciences naturelles et sciences humaines et sociales, cette étude s’intéresse à une lutte des paradigmes tout à fait comparable de la fin du XIXe siècle, afin d’analyser, pour la première fois, l’affrontement entre le paradigme historique et le paradigme bio-médical. Deux modèles de la vie humaine y sont en jeu : une vision culturaliste, qui souligne les transformations historiques de l’homme, ses possibilités, ses progrès ; et une vision naturaliste, qui analyse les déterminismes d’une nature humaine constante. Les deux paradigmes ont, à cette époque, une importance primordiale pour la littérature, car ils influencent la description des personnages, voire la structure fondamentale des mondes romanesques. Pour rendre compte de cette confrontation, six romans représentatifs sont sollicités, qui permettent de surcroît de comparer les littératures française et allemande de l’époque : Salammbô et L’Éducation sentimentale de Flaubert ; Nana et Germinal de Zola ; Effi Briest et Irrungen, Wirrungen de Fontane. L’étude s’intéresse avant tout aux sources historiques, médicales et biologiques de ces textes, pour montrer comment le savoir est intégré dans l’œuvre. Elle s’enrichit de perspectives historiques (Michelet, Burckhardt) et philosophiques (Nietzsche)

Les deux protagonistes parcourant presque toutes les sections des connaissances humaines de l’époque, le texte romanesque se trouve saturé d’innombrables extraits prélevés sur les ouvrages les plus divers. La rédaction de cet étrange roman a en effet requis un travail considérable de documentation, comme en témoignent les dossiers documentaires qui comprennent notamment une importante masse de notes de lecture prises par l’écrivain au fil de ses lectures préparatoires. Flaubert épistémologue a pour objet l’examen précis et attentif du travail documentaire effectué par le romancier. Elle est centrée sur l’une des disciplines-phares de l’« encyclopédie critique en farce », la médecine, dont il est question au chapitre III du roman, et qui est d’un intérêt majeur, en ce sens qu’elle entretenait au XIXe siècle un rapport étroit avec la littérature. L’étude approfondie des notes que l’auteur de Bouvard a prises sur la médecine permettra d’éclairer l’interférence des deux pratiques discursives, médicale d’une part, littéraire de l’autre. C’est ainsi que l’on pourra restituer à l’entreprise esthétique de Flaubert sa véritable portée critique et épistémologique, et par là même, saisir le roman dans sa dimension dialogique

De tous les espaces de la demeure que la fiction dite réaliste représente, l’escalier est sans doute le moins investi par l’écriture : sa présence dans le texte, qui donne parfois lieu à une description élaborée, se limite le plus souvent à une mention très discrète. Or, il se trouve que les degrés, conduisant d’un étage à un autre, peuvent mener conjointement d’un état à un autre, et, davantage, à la perception d’une mutation. Encouragée en cela par la solitude qui règne fréquemment dans ce lieu, ou, différemment, par les particularités, physiques ou psychologiques, des rencontres qui à l’occasion s’y produisent, la conscience est susceptible d’accéder ici à un mode original de cognition, qu’elle n’aurait pu élaborer ailleurs : acquisition peut-être imprévue d’un savoir nouveau, dans laquelle l’orientation du mouvement – vers le haut, vers le bas – intervient de façon prépondérante. Relu dans cette perspective, le roman français du XIXe siècle, dont un important échantillonnage constitue le corpus de cet essai, en acquiert comme un surcroît d’intelligibilité. Les aventures de l’esprit dans l’escalier ne bouleversent pas notre appréhension de cette littérature du sujet triomphant, mais elles l’affinent sans doute. Elles permettent, aussi, de retrouver, dans les évolutions de cette thématique, le mouvement d’une histoire de la fiction romanesque, voire de l’Histoire elle-même

The book includes a wide-ranging collection of essays by some of Liking’s finest critics addressing her life and work, from her earlier fiction and social criticism to her later experimental drama, which has been produced on stages around the world. Several essays also look at Liking’s culture-based entrepreneurial work, in which she has attempted to establish a new economic support for African artistic expression. Liking’s excellent but little-known poetry and art criticism, her iconoclastic novels and essays are all the subject of close critical attention in particular studies. There is also consideration of the challenges that her original language and fictional forms present to a literary translator. Liking’s work has provoked an extensive commentary, in the popular press as well as in scholarly journals and her critical reception both inside and outside of Africa is carefully examined.     The image, before representing, to signify, acts and makes act. The performance of images, which this book undertakes exploration, is to be understood first of all as the evaluation of their effectiveness: what are the effects of images? It is then their agency: in what way are images living beings? It is also their performativity: as there are acts of speech, there are acts of image whose modalities can be detailed. Finally, it is their power: what can an image, including a text, for example, be incapable?

    Christian image holds a special place here because, far from being a simple "Bible of illiterate "subject to the reign of the text, it permeates all aspects of the life and thought of Christian societies, from their theological and anthropological foundations - God created man in his image; the Son is the image of the Father - up to the most diverse uses of visual objects. But in the West it is not only in the Middle Ages that the images are active: this book is also devoted to the new forms of visual performances that appeared with the Renaissance or the mass-media society. L’image, avant de représenter, de signifier, agit et fait agir. La performance des images, dont ce livre entreprend l’exploration, est à comprendre d’abord comme l’évaluation de leur efficacité : quels sont les effets des images ? C’est ensuite leur agentivité : en quelle manière les images sont-elles des êtres vivants ? C’est aussi leur performativité : comme il y a des actes de parole, il y a des actes d’image dont les modalités peuvent être détaillées. Enfin, c’est leur puissance : que peut une image, dont un texte, par exemple, serait incapable ?

    L’image chrétienne tient ici une place à part car, loin d’être une simple « Bible des illettrés » soumise au règne du texte, elle imprègne tous les aspects de la vie et de la pensée des sociétés chrétiennes, depuis leurs fondements théologiques et anthropologiques – Dieu créa l’homme à son image ; le Fils est l’image du Père – jusqu’aux utilisations les plus diverses des objets visuels. Mais en Occident ce n’est pas seulement au Moyen Âge que les images sont actives : ce livre est aussi consacré aux nouvelles formes de performances visuelles qui sont apparues avec la Renaissance ou la société mass-médiatique.

These questions are the starting point of the present issue which brings together different comparative studies from the vantage points of: methodological and epistemological reflection about (in)comparability and difference; transversal phenomena of acculturation, networks and intercultural dialogues; the hybridity of (natural and conceptual) languages, translation and transposition. In this way, the studies presented in this volume hope to foster discussions about the foundation, the history, the limits and the methods of comparatives studies today. Quels renouvellements méthodologiques récents occupent la littérature comparée? Quels paradigmes critiques mobili­sent les pratiques de recherche comparatistes aujourd’hui?
