    Die hier vorgelegte Sammlung von Studien umfaßt eine Auswahl kleinerer Schriften zur Autobiographie, die seit den siebziger Jahren bis heute die größeren Arbeiten Günter Niggls zu dieser Gattung begleiten. Eröffnet wird die Sammlung von zwei einführenden Aufsätzen über literarische Zweckformen allgemein, ihre Einordnung ins Literatursystem und die Aufgaben der Geschichtsschreibung dieser nichtpoetischen Gattungen. Es folgt ein Entwurf zur Theorie der Autobiographie, der auch den geschichtlichen Wandel ihrer Definition berücksichtigt. Die weiteren Beiträge behandeln verschiedene historische Erscheinungsformen dieser Gattung von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart. Sie können verdeutlichen, wie die Gattung schon in der Antike alle ihre wesentlichen Typen entfaltet, die dann seit dem Beginn der Neuzeit und verstärkt im 18. Jahrhundert zu je verschiedenen Zeugnissen des modernen Individualismus werden, bis schon bei Goethe und entschiedener in den darauffolgenden Epochen an die Stelle der Egozentrik die neue, noch immer vorherrschende Polarität von Ich und Zeit, Ich und Jahrhundert treten wird.

    During the last few decades, there has been great interest in the problems of defining the extent and nature of kingship in the Mycenaean world. Questions concerning the degree of economic and religious power held by the king have been given special emphasis. This book surveys the conclusions drawn by individual scholars studying the Linear B tablets, contrasts their theories with our knowledge of the Mycenaean kingdoms as derived from the archaeological record, and finally compares this evidence with possible reflections in the oral tradition, specifically in the Iliad and Odyssey . This approach leads to the suggestion that the king in the Mycenaean period had only limited power over the society and its economy. Although the king appears to have controlled a large segment of the economy, it is argued here that other individuals and family groups within the kingdom also had a certain degree of economic independence.

    The crisis in Israel/Palestine has long been the world’s most visible military conflict. Yet the region’s cultural and intellectual life remains all but unknown to most foreign observers, which means that literary texts that make it into circulation abroad tend to be received as historical documents rather than aesthetic artefacts. Rhetorics of Belonging examines the diverse ways in which Palestinian and Israeli world writers have responded to the expectation that they will ‘narrate’ the nation, invigorating critical debates about the political and artistic value of national narration as a reading and writing practice. It considers writers whose work is rarely discussed together, offering new readings of the work of Edward Said, Amos Oz, Mourid Barghouti, Orly Castel-Bloom, Sahar Khalifeh, and Anton Shammas. This book helps to restore the category of the nation to contemporary literary criticism by attending to a context where the idea of the nation is so central a part of everyday experience that writers cannot not address it, and readers cannot help but read for it. It also points a way toward a relational literary history of Israel/Palestine, one that would situate Palestinian and Israeli writing in the context of a history of antagonistic interaction. The book’s findings are relevant not only for scholars working in postcolonial studies and Israel/Palestine studies, but for anyone interested in the difficult and unpredictable intersections of literature and politics.
