    The title "Paul Celan: Expression of the unspeakable" explains Celan's technique of showing the crude reality of the Third Reich with simple linguistic means, using traditional topoi of the lyric. Celan also questions the German language after Auschwitz in his poem Todesfuge. Unter dem Titel "Paul Celan: Ausdruck des Unsagbaren" wird gezeigt, wie Celan mit einfachen linguistischen Mitteln und den aus der lyrischen Tradition übernommenen Topoi die Realität des Bösen im Dritten Reich darstellt. Zugleich wird dadurch in seiner Todesfuge die deutsche Sprache nach Auschwitz in Frage gestellt.

    This article deals with the annotations made by Victor Klemperer, in the diary of his 1925 journey to Rio de Janeiro. His descriptions are shown to be pervaded by his constant attempt to analyse, to interpret objectively and to compare his observations with what he already knew, and not merely a protocol of his emotions and the impressions brought about by the newness and the exotism of his experiences during the journey. Der vorliegende Aufsatz handelt von den Aufzeichnungen Viktor Klemperers im Tagebuch seiner Reise nach Rio de Janeiro von 1925. Es wird herausgearbeitet, daß seine Beschreibungen nicht einfach seine Gefühle und Eindrücke angesichts der Neuheit und des Exotismus seiner Reiseerfahrungen wiedergeben, sondern durchdrungen sind von seinem beständigen Bemühen, zu analysieren, auf objektive Weise zu interpretieren und seine Beobachtungen mit schon Bekanntem zu vergleichen.

    This essay aimes to introduce the German-Jewish Poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) to the literary public of Brasil, where she has not been translated and is therefore nearly unknown. Proceeding from the translation of 12 paradigmatic poems, the crucial periods of her life, poetry and poetology are outlined: As her famous college Paul Celan, she was born in Czernovitch this multicultural town of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. An important number of her poems are the result of the intimate relation with her country. The early death of her father and the resulting poverty led her to try to find a new home in New York, but she came back in the period of beginning National Socialism and suffered the persecution of Holocaust. After long years of travelling, she settled down in a Düsseldorf home for elderly Jewish people. The central themes in her poetry are: the loss of country, the Holocaust, and survival in a kind of spiritual country, that is: language and writing. Der vorliegende Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, die (hierzulande weitgehend unbekannte, weil unübersetzte) deutsch-jüdische Dichterin Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) dem literaturinteressierten Publikum Brasiliens vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Übersetzung von zwölf paradigmatischen Gedichten werden die entscheidenden Lebensstationen und Schaffensphasen der Dichterin, die wie Paul Celan im vielsprachigen Czernowitz der österreichisch-ungarischen Donaumonarchie aufwuchs, charakterisiert: Ihre tiefe Verbundenheit mit ihrer galizischen Heimat, ihr früher, vom Tod des Vaters und darauf folgender bitterer Armut erzwungener Versuch, in New York Fuß zu fassen; Rückkehr und Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit; ihre Reisejahre durch Europa auf der Suche nach neuen Wurzeln und schließlich – gezeichnet von Krankheit – ihre letzte Station im jüdischen Altenheim in Düsseldorf. Als zentrale Themen ihres vielfältigen Werks, das in Deutschland in acht Bänden zur Verfugung steht, dürfen gelten: Heimatverlust und -erinnerung, der Holocaust, das Leben in einer geistigen Heimat, dem "Mutterland Sprache".

    It is our aim to focus on certain aspects of the complex relationship between language – particularly German – and homeland/identity as seen in the work of a number of Jewish poets and authors. Initially we wish to point out this conflicting relationship in the work of Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer, two Jewish poets born in Romania. The examples of Viktor Klemperer and Ruth Klüger emphasize the complexity of this specific characteristic in the biography/work of German authors of Jewish origin. Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate born in Bulgaria, is a literary personality whose biography shows the importance of German culture influence in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the Twentieth Century: Canetti considers himself a German poet who belongs to the German-speaking cultural and literary world. Die Beispiele von Paul Celan und Rose Ausländer zeigen einige dramatische Aspekte des komplexen Verhältnisses zwischen Sprache und Identität, bzw. zwischen der deutschen Sprache im Dritten Reich und der literarischen Identität beider Dichter jüdischer Herkunft. Viktor Klemperer ist das Beispiel eines assimilierten Juden, der stets sein Deutschtum und seine tiefe Zugehörigkeit zu Deutschland und der deutschen Kultur unterstreicht. Ruth Klüger gehört zu einer späteren Generation, die sich eigentlich heimatlos fühlt, aber auch in der deutschen Sprache eine literarische Heimat findet. Canetti, Nobelpreisträger, ein sephardischer Jude, der in Bulgarien geboren ist, wählt für sich als Kosmopolit, als Mensch und Dichter eine Heimat, wo die deutsche Sprache und Kultur die Grenzen bilden.

    This article deals with the annotations made by Victor Klemperer, in the diary of his 1925 journey to Rio de Janeiro. His descriptions are shown to be pervaded by his constant attempt to analyse, to interpret objectively and to compare his observations with what he already knew, and not merely a protocol of his emotions and the impressions brought about by the newness and the exotism of his experiences during the journey. ; Der vorliegende Aufsatz handelt von den Aufzeichnungen Viktor Klemperers im Tagebuch seiner Reise nach Rio de Janeiro von 1925. Es wird herausgearbeitet, daß seine Beschreibungen nicht einfach seine Gefühle und Eindrücke angesichts der Neuheit und des Exotismus seiner Reiseerfahrungen wiedergeben, sondern durchdrungen sind von seinem beständigen Bemühen, zu analysieren, auf objektive Weise zu interpretieren und seine Beobachtungen mit schon Bekanntem zu vergleichen.

    This essay aimes to introduce the German-Jewish Poet Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) to the literary public of Brasil, where she has not been translated and is therefore nearly unknown. Proceeding from the translation of 12 paradigmatic poems, the crucial periods of her life, poetry and poetology are outlined: As her famous college Paul Celan, she was born in Czernovitch this multicultural town of the Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. An important number of her poems are the result of the intimate relation with her country. The early death of her father and the resulting poverty led her to try to find a new home in New York, but she came back in the period of beginning National Socialism and suffered the persecution of Holocaust. After long years of travelling, she settled down in a Düsseldorf home for elderly Jewish people. The central themes in her poetry are: the loss of country, the Holocaust, and survival in a kind of spiritual country, that is: language and writing. ; Der vorliegende Aufsatz verfolgt das Ziel, die (hierzulande weitgehend unbekannte, weil unübersetzte) deutsch-jüdische Dichterin Rose Ausländer (1901-1988) dem literaturinteressierten Publikum Brasiliens vorzustellen. Ausgehend von der Übersetzung von zwölf paradigmatischen Gedichten werden die entscheidenden Lebensstationen und Schaffensphasen der Dichterin, die wie Paul Celan im vielsprachigen Czernowitz der österreichisch-ungarischen Donaumonarchie aufwuchs, charakterisiert: Ihre tiefe Verbundenheit mit ihrer galizischen Heimat, ihr früher, vom Tod des Vaters und darauf folgender bitterer Armut erzwungener Versuch, in New York Fuß zu fassen; Rückkehr und Verfolgung in der NS-Zeit; ihre Reisejahre durch Europa auf der Suche nach neuen Wurzeln und schließlich – gezeichnet von Krankheit – ihre letzte Station im jüdischen Altenheim in Düsseldorf.     It is our aim to focus on certain aspects of the complex relationship between language – particularly German – and homeland/identity as seen in the work of a number of Jewish poets and authors. Initially we wish to point out this conflicting relationship in the work of Paul Celan and Rose Ausländer, two Jewish poets born in Romania. The examples of Viktor Klemperer and Ruth Klüger emphasize the complexity of this specific characteristic in the biography/work of German authors of Jewish origin. Elias Canetti, the Nobel Laureate born in Bulgaria, is a literary personality whose biography shows the importance of German culture influence in Eastern Europe at the beginning of the Twentieth Century: Canetti considers himself a German poet who belongs to the German-speaking cultural and literary world. ; Die Beispiele von Paul Celan und Rose Ausländer zeigen einige dramatische Aspekte des komplexen Verhältnisses zwischen Sprache und Identität, bzw. zwischen der deutschen Sprache im Dritten Reich und der literarischen Identität beider Dichter jüdischer Herkunft. Viktor Klemperer ist das Beispiel eines assimilierten Juden, der stets sein Deutschtum und seine tiefe Zugehörigkeit zu Deutschland und der deutschen Kultur unterstreicht. Ruth Klüger gehört zu einer späteren Generation, die sich eigentlich heimatlos fühlt, aber auch in der deutschen Sprache eine literarische Heimat findet. Canetti, Nobelpreisträger, ein sephardischer Jude, der in Bulgarien geboren ist, wählt für sich als Kosmopolit, als Mensch und Dichter eine Heimat, wo die deutsche Sprache und Kultur die Grenzen bilden.
