    Eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Art und Weise, wie wir uns selbst sehen und definieren. »Selbstporträt in Schwarz und Weiß« ist die Geschichte einer amerikanischen Familie, die sich über mehrere Generationen hinweg verändert auf ihrer Suche nach dem, was es heißt schwarz zu sein, und dem, was als weiß angenommen wird. Thomas Chatterton Williams, der Sohn eines »schwarzen« Vaters aus dem abgehängten Süden, und einer »weißen« Mutter aus dem Westen, war sein ganzes Leben davon überzeugt, dass ein einziger Tropfen »schwarzen Bluts« einen Menschen schwarz macht. Das war so fundamental für sein Selbstverständnis, dass er nie eine andere Überlegung zuließ. Aber die schockierende Erfahrung, der schwarze Vater zweier weißer Kinder geworden zu sein, erschütterte diesen Glauben. Es ist jedoch nicht so, dass er nun glaubte, nicht mehr schwarz zu sein oder dass seine Kinder weiß sind, sondern dass sich diese Kategorien von niemanden mehr angemessen erfassen lassen. Großartig geschrieben und darauf aus, die festgefahrenen Meinungen über race auf den Kopf zu stellen.

    Attempts to approach the topic of drink and literature and the question of how far this is interconnected with the habits of the writers can be considered within the wider frame of what is called drinking studies. This is an interdisciplinary field which is a composite of numerous facets, the common denominator being the analysis of how drink has functioned and functions in the lives of individuals and communities, taking into consideration diverse contexts, perspectives and backgrounds connected with alcohol consumption (or abuse). Among numerous examinations within the field of drinking studies, the province of literary criticism offers interesting insights. Any critical debate in this respect inevitably focuses on two areas, the first one being the study of literature per se; the other encompasses the writers’ lives and the extent to which their drinking affects their writing. Thus, the perspective can be critical, biographical, or both, reflecting what is often referred to as life-writing, or self-writing. In some instances, one might even risk calling it inspirational writing, and in these cases, one needs to debate the question of how alcohol as a source of inspiration – or ‘booze as a muse’ – is perceived

Darin zu spüren ist stets die große Zuneigung füreinander, während die Themen um oft prekäre finanzielle Situationen, um Urlaube und durchzechte Nächte und um den großen Frust über das Konstrukt ?Literaturbetrieb? kreisen. Während Fauser in diesem nie wirklich Fuß fasste, hatte sich Carl Weissner mit den Übersetzungen von Charles Bukowski oder Songtexten von Frank Zappa bereits einen Namen gemacht und tritt oft als Ratgeber, beruhigende Stimme oder auch Lektor auf.

    Biographical note: James Dorson is an assistant professor of North American Studies at the John F. Kennedy Institute of Freie Universität Berlin. - Long description: Counternarrative Possibilities reads Cormac McCarthy's Westerns against the backdrop of two formative tropes in American mythology: virgin land (from the 1950s) and homeland (after '9/11' ). Looking at McCarthy's Westerns in the context of American Studies, James Dorson shows how his novels counter the national narratives underlying these tropes and reinvest them with new, potentially transformative meaning. Departing from prevailing accounts of McCarthy that place him in relation to his literary antecedents, Counternarrative Possibilities takes a forwardlooking approach that reads McCarthy's work as a key influence on millennial fiction.     The Handbook of Anglophone World Literatures is the first globally comprehensive attempt to chart the rich field of world literatures in English. Part I navigates different usages of the term ‘world literature’ from an historical point of view. Part II discusses a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to world literature. This is also where the handbook’s conceptualisation of ‘Anglophone world literatures’ – in the plural – is developed and interrogated in juxtaposition with proximate fields of inquiry such as postcolonialism, translation studies, memory studies and environmental humanities. Part III charts sociological approaches to Anglophone world literatures, considering their commodification, distribution, translation and canonisation on the international book market. Part IV, finally, is dedicated to the geographies of Anglophone world literatures and provides sample interpretations of literary texts written in English.
