    1925 ließ Ernst Troeltsch einen "modernen Theologen" sagen, dass "das eschatologische Bureau heutzutage zumeist geschlossen [sei], weil die Gedanken, die es begründeten, die Wurzel verloren haben". Zurückzuführen sei diese Entwertung der Eschatologie auf die Integration der Idee des Fortschritts in den christlichen Erlösungsgedanken. Der Frage, ob diese Diagnose für die Theologie zutraf, kann hier nicht nachgegangen werden. In unserem Zusammenhang ist sie nur deshalb interessant, weil die Dependance des eschatologischen Bureaus in der philosophischen Fakultät der Heidelberger Universität ein Jahr später in einer heiklen Angelegenheit tätig werden musste. 1926 wurde Alexander Koschewnikoff, ein junger Russe, der seit dem Sommersemester 1921 Philosophie und Orientalistik in der süddeutschen Universitätsstadt und seinem Wohnort Berlin studiert hatte, von Karl Jaspers mit einer Arbeit über 'Die religiöse Philosophie Wladimir Solowjews' promoviert. 1930 erschien ein zwanzigseitiger Auszug der Doktorarbeit in einer in Bonn erscheinend en 'internationalen Zeitschrift für russische Philosophie, Literaturwissenschaft und Kultur'. Laut Koschewnikoff war für Vladimir Solov'ev (1853-1900), den vielleicht bedeutendsten russischen Philosophen des 19. Jahrhunderts "von Anfang an eine religiös-mystische Weltauffassung charakteristisch". Diesen religiösen Charakter habe seine Philosophie bis zuletzt beibehalten und auch seine Geschichtsphilosophie wesentlich geprägt: "es wird ein zu verwirklichendes Zukunftsideal [...] aufgestellt, und die 'tatsächliche' Geschichte als eine dazu mit Notwendigkeit führende Entwicklung konstruiert". Bei der Aufstellung dieser "Zukunftsideale" hat die Kenntnis der tatsächlichen Geschichte keine nennenswerte Rolle gespielt. Insofern habe Solov'ev nicht Geschichtsphilosophie im modernen Sinne des Wortes betrieben, sondern "Geschichtskonstruktion". Koschewnikoff unterscheidet in Solov'evs Geschichtsauffassung drei Perioden: eine slawophile, eine katholische Periode und den Standpunkt der letzten Schrift Solov'evs, der 'Drei Gespräche'.
