"In the wake of World War II and the Holocaust, it seemed there was no place for German in Israel and no trace of Hebrew in Germany -- the two languages and their cultures appeared as divergent as the directions of their scripts. Yet when placed side by side on opposing pages, German and Hebrew converge in the middle. Comprised of essays on literature, history, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts, this volume explores the mutual influence of two linguistic cultures long held as separate or even as diametrically opposed. From Moses Mendelssohn's arrival in Berlin in 1748 to the recent wave of Israeli migration to Berlin, the essays gathered here shed new light on the painful yet productive relationship between modern German and Hebrew cultures"-- "In the past fifty years, the relationship of German and Israeli cultures has evolved from one of mutual estrangement to one of mutual fascination. This volume will be the first one dedicated to the outgrowth of this exchange: German-Hebrew Studies. The collection will expose the contours of this new field and reveal its potential to redefine the disciplinary boundaries to which German and Hebrew linguistic cultures are traditionally confined"--

In the wake of World War II and the Holocaust, it seemed there was no place for German in Israel and no trace of Hebrew in Germany — the two languages and their cultures appeared as divergent as the directions of their scripts. Yet when placed side by side on opposing pages, German and Hebrew converge in the middle. Comprised of essays on literature, history, philosophy, and the visual and performing arts, this volume explores the mutual influence of two linguistic cultures long held as separate or even as diametrically opposed. From Moses Mendelssohn’s arrival in Berlin in 1748 to the recent wave of Israeli migration to Berlin, the essays gathered here shed new light on the painful yet productive relationship between modern German and Hebrew cultures.

When looking at how trauma is represented in literature and the arts, we tend to focus on the weight of the past. In this book, Amir Eshel suggests that this retrospective gaze has trapped us in a search for reason in the madness of the twentieth century's catastrophes at the expense of literature's prospective vision. Considering several key literary works, Eshel argues in Futurity that by grappling with watershed events of modernity, these works display a future-centric engagement with the past that opens up the present to new political, cultural, and ethical possibilities-what h...

This volume will be the first one dedicated to the outgrowth of this exchange: German-Hebrew Studies. The collection will expose the contours of this new field and reveal its potential to redefine the disciplinary boundaries to which German and Hebrew linguistic cultures are traditionally confined"--
