In Turkey currently there are about 20 Translation Studies departments with over 4000 students in six different languages. All these departments generally include a final project in their curriculum in the last two semesters, where the students have to prove their translation competence. In the literature and at the web sites of the Translation Studies departments in Turkey and abroad there is very little teaching material about these final projects while these projects are invaluable for the prospective translators. Therefore these projects have to be arranged as very functional, effective and representative of the translation reality. While the connection to the real translation market is assured, the students have to demonstrate their translation competence. Thus all Translation Studies departments have to consider these conditions and to organize this course under the real conditions of translation market and taking into consideration translation theory as well.

The notion of world literature is often understood as a global distribution of literary forms and structures from Europe to the rest of the globe. Under the premise that non- European literatures don't just reproduce European forms, but reinterpret and change them in the process of adaptation, world literature can be defined as a "productive misunderstanding". This article attempts to show that Orhan Pamuk's novel "Masumiyet Müzesi" ("Museum of Innocence") is in this sense a productive appropriation of European forms of the novel. Pamuk's novel is a narration about the modernization of Turkey in the 20th century, which is depicted as a chain of faulty imitation that nevertheless creates something new. Similarly, the "Museum of Innocence" is characterized by an abundance of intertextual relations to the tradition of European novel (e. g., to Proust's texts), which, however creates a "productive misunderstanding".

In many researches on cultural studies, where the relationship between memory and history was investigated, researchers observed that a deluge of memory and reminiscence have been experienced all over the world since the beginning of the nineties. As a reason for the latter, they point to the possible effects of the termination of the 20th century, during which the most harmful disasters of the recorded human history took place. Indeed, one may observe that the number historical novels published in the continental Europe, as well as in Turkey, which put the near-past on the focus of the texts has been increased considerably since 2000. Re-evaluation of the historical events by looking at the near-past from the present time, and thus making stories out of memories that have been hidden in minds, but have hardly been spelled out so far, seems to be the current attitude.

Besides in the historical novels, the so called "oral history" that arise from the memories carried along the generations of one or more families, which eventually forms an individual/collective memory, finds more and more place in the "new" family novels that can be considered as an extension of the historical novels. The novel "Serenad" by Zülfü Livaneli (published in March 2011), whose backbone is constructed by historical events, belongs to the latter category of family novels, in the sense that the historical content of the story was exposed as a part of the recollection of the individual and collective memories of the family members.

In the present study, the relationship of the characters of the latter novel with history was investigated in the framework of the new family novel.
