    We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

Entgegen der Selbstverständlichkeit literaturwissenschaftlicher Interpretation, der zufolge jedes Zeichen die Sinnkonstruktion eines Textes mitträgt, erfahren Satzzeichen in der philosophischen Auslegung wenig Aufmerksamkeit. Entlang einzelner Beispiele schärfen die Beiträge dieses Bandes den Blick für das philologische Detail und zeigen, wie Satzzeichen nicht nur an der Entfaltung des rhetorischen Repertoires philosophischer Textpraxis konstitutiv beteiligt sind. Das aufmerksame Close Reading wird dabei für die philosophische Lektüre überraschend fruchtbar.

Der neuzeitliche Traum einer restlosen Benennung des Weltganzen wird fraglich, wenn ihr Medium - die propositionale Aussagelogik - unter Verdacht gerät. Der Band wirft die brisante Frage auf, ob der für das Jahrhundert prägende linguistic turn nicht so sehr in einer Hinwendung, als vielmehr in einer "Abwendung" vom Sagen besteht, die sich in der Entsagungsgeste von Melvilles Bartleby emblematisch verkörpert. Einzelanalysen zu literarischen Strategien bei Mallarmé, Wittgenstein, Celan, Foucault, Adorno, Derrida, Lévinas u.a.m. führen vor, wie Unterlassen nicht nur ein kritisches, sondern auch stets ein schöpferisches Moment in sich birgt. Die aus vier Kontinenten stammenden Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger befassen sich mit der Frage, inwiefern die Fähigkeit, ästhetische, sprachliche und kulturelle Übergänge angesichts hoher Heterogenität hervorzubringen, Europa am ehesten ausmacht. Von Fatou Diome bis Yoko Tawada, von mehrsprachigen Räumen wie Siebenbürgen bis zur Mährischen Walachei untersuchen sie Texte, Semantiken und kulturelle Praktiken des Übergangs. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur, der Erinnerung an den Holocaust sowie postkolonialen Perspektiven.

In beiden Fällen changieren Beschwerden zwischen konstruktivem Engagement und destruktivem Exzess. Die Beiträger*innen aus der Literatur- und Medienwissenschaft untersuchen die Strukturlogik des Beschwerdeführens in Literatur, Film und anderen Medien und decken auf, wie dessen grundlegende Ambivalenz die Verhandlung von Sachfragen bestimmt.     Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    Die Publikation stellt den Eröffnungsband der Reihe Textologie der Philosophie, Literatur und Wissenschaften dar und versammelt Beiträge, die sich ausgehend von der Frage nach der Bedeutung und Funktion von Textualität der Entwicklung eines erweiterten Textbegriffs aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive widmen. Gemeinsames Ziel der Beträge ist es, Wege aufzuzeigen, wie die traditionelle Arbeitsteilung zwischen Philosophie, Linguistikund Philologie aufgegeben und wie für die Darstellungsformen des Denkens sensibilisiertwerden kann. Klassische Textbegriffe werden so zur Diskussion gestellt und revidiert, indem auf ästhetische, erkenntnistheoretische, sprachphilosophische, editionsphilologische und literaturtheoretische Problemkonstellationen fokussierte Textinterpretationen vorgelegt und die philosophischen Implikationen philologischer Entscheidungen aufgezeigt werden. In Anknüpfung an diese theoretische Reflexion erproben die Beiträge neue Lektürepraktiken, die die Performativität und Medialität philosophischer, wissenschaftlicher wie literarischer Texte vor Augen führen

    Die Publikation stellt den Eröffnungsband der Reihe Textologie der Philosophie, Literatur und Wissenschaften dar und versammelt Beiträge, die sich ausgehend von der Frage nach der Bedeutung und Funktion von Textualität der Entwicklung eines erweiterten Textbegriffs aus transdisziplinärer Perspektive widmen. Gemeinsames Ziel der Beträge ist es, Wege aufzuzeigen, wie die traditionelle Arbeitsteilung zwischen Philosophie, Linguistikund Philologie aufgegeben und wie für die Darstellungsformen des Denkens sensibilisiertwerden kann. Klassische Textbegriffe werden so zur Diskussion gestellt und revidiert, indem auf ästhetische, erkenntnistheoretische, sprachphilosophische, editionsphilologische und literaturtheoretische Problemkonstellationen fokussierte Textinterpretationen vorgelegt und die philosophischen Implikationen philologischer Entscheidungen aufgezeigt werden. In Anknüpfung an diese theoretische Reflexion erproben die Beiträge neue Lektürepraktiken, die die Performativität und Medialität philosophischer, wissenschaftlicher wie literarischer Texte vor Augen führen

    This book contributes to our understanding of how older learners negotiate family internal and family external socialisation processes and thereby how parents' ideologies and practices, peer socialisation, and language status or societal demands come together in adolescents' lives. It integrates the sociohistorical context and adolescents' attitudes with the parents' role. Through the use of 'small stories' and ethnographic observation this book explores the social and cultural worlds of Polish immigrant adolescents in Ireland, the ways they seek membership and belonging in their communities of practice, and the ways in which they develop sociohistorical understandings across the languages and cultures they are part of. It sheds light on schooling and family communities and the role they play in the socialization processes of immigrant children

Maschinen und Objekte - ja ganze Umgebungen - werden zu eigenständigen Akteuren, die mit uns kommunizieren und auf diversen medialen Ebenen in Interaktion treten. Wie sind die Kontexte, Möglichkeitsbedingungen und Wirkungszusammenhänge gestalteter Kommunikation - in Bezug auf Raum, Bild, Sprache, Objekt und System - heute zu verorten? Die Beiträge des Bandes fragen danach, wie Kommunikation heute gestaltet wird, und wie Gestaltung heute kommuniziert Biographical note: Axel Vogelsang (Prof. Dr.), geb. 1964, ist Designforscher an der Hochschule Luzern - Design & Kunst in der Schweiz. Er unterrichtet dort im MA Design und leitet die Forschungsgruppe »Visual Narrative«, die im Kontext zeitgenössischer Bildmedien und audiovisueller Medien forscht. Seit 2012 ist er Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Designtheorie und -forschung (DGTF). Sabine Foraita (Prof. Dr. phil.), geb. 1965, Designwissenschaftlerin, lehrt Designwissenschaft an der Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaft und Kunst (HAWK) in Hildesheim an der Fakultät Gestaltung. Seit 2011 ist sie Vorstandsmitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Designtheorie und -forschung (DGTF). Bianca Herlo (Dr. phil.), geb. 1975, lebt in Berlin. Sie ist Designforscherin an der Universität der Künste Berlin, Design Research Lab (Schwerpunkte Civic Design und Social Design), und leitet die Forschungsgruppe »Ungleichheit und digitale Souveränität« am Berliner Weizenbaum Institut für die vernetzte Gesellschaft.
