Bringt die öffentliche politische Diskussion eher einen Polarisierungs- als einen Rationalisierungseffekt hervor? Diese Frage ist insbesondere angesichts der jüngsten Entwicklungen im digitalen Raum virulent geworden. Polemische Öffentlichkeiten sind jedoch nicht erst ein Phänomen unserer Gegenwart, sondern haben eine lange Geschichte. Diese nehmen die Beiträger*innen des Bandes in der Zeitspanne vom Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bis in unsere Gegenwart in den Blick und fokussieren dabei die Interferenz zwischen politischer und literarischer Kommunikation. Erst vor diesem historischen Hintergrund wird deutlich, was an den aggressiven öffentlichen Meinungskämpfen unserer Tage neu ist - und was nicht.

Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

In Zeiten der Globalisierung und der Entgrenzung und Infragestellung staatlicher Souveränität erhält die Frage nach der Legitimität des Staates besondere Brisanz. Wenn Macht durch das Konzept der Legitimität in gerechtfertigte Herrschaft überführt werden soll, bedarf die Legitimität als solche genauer Betrachtung. Dabei ist nicht nur zu fragen, worauf die Anerkennung einer Rechtsordnung beruht, sondern auch, wie ihre Anerkennungswürdigkeit begründet werden kann. Die Vielschichtigkeit des Legitimitätsbegriffs legt es dabei nahe, ihn aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu betrachten und diese Perspektiven zu einem möglichst umfassenden Gesamtbild zusammenzufügen. Das Spektrum der an diesem Band beteiligten Disziplinen umfasst die Ethnologie, die Psychologie, die Rechtswissenschaft, die Staatstheorie, die Politikwissenschaft und die Philosophie. Er gliedert sich in folgende thematische Blöcke: Empirische Zugänge, Sozialwissenschaftliche Zugänge, Theoretische Zugänge und Entwicklungsfragen. Mit Beiträgen von Hermann Amborn, Eva Birkenstock, Sergio Dellavalle, Andreas Funke, Andreas Glöckner, Tobias Herbst, Ulf Kemper, Lando Kirchmair, Anna Katharina Mangold, Andreas Niederberger, Utz Schliesky, Peter Seyferth, Rüdiger Voigt, Claudia Wirsing und Sabrina Zucca-Soest In these times of globalisation and the denationalisation and questioning of state sovereignty, the question of the legitimacy of the state has become particularly explosive. If power is to be transformed into justified rule through the concept of legitimacy, legitimacy as such requires close examination. In this context, it is not only necessary to ask what the recognition of a legal system is based on, but also how its recognition can be justified. The complexity of the concept of legitimacy suggests that it should be considered from different perspectives and that these perspectives should be combined to form a comprehensive overall picture. The spectrum of disciplines involved in this volume includes ethnology, psychology, law, state theory, political science and philosophy. It is divided into the following thematic blocks: empirical approaches, social science approaches, theoretical approaches and development issues. In vielen Großerzählungen über die Veränderung moderner Arbeit spielt die Diagnose einer postfordistischen Transformation eine entscheidende Rolle. Konstatiert werden der Umbau der Arbeitswelt in Richtung flexibler, symbolischer und kreativer Arbeitsformen bei gleichzeitiger Erosion kollektiver Organisationsformen und des solidarischen Zusammenhalts unter Lohnarbeitenden. Dieses Buch nähert sich dem Diskurs postfordistischer Transformation anhand seiner Ausprägungen im deutschen Kino der Gegenwart. Es analysiert, wie die Filme mit der Herausforderung umgehen, für die prekären Sinnlichkeiten der ,neuen' Arbeitswelten und die ontologische Flüchtigkeit des Sozialen eine spezifische Form zu finden. Dabei lassen sich zentrale filmische Motive identifizieren - von der Beratung über die Besprechung bis zur filmischen Kritik postfordistischer Sprechweisen -, denen das Buch in Dokumentar- und Spielfilmen wie DIE AUSBILDUNG, TONI ERDMANN oder WORK HARD PLAY HARD nachgeht. Die Analyse ihrer verschiedenen Verweisbeziehungen und diskursiven Funktionen schärft in theoretisch-methodischer Hinsicht die Aufmerksamkeit für die (sozialen) Signifikationspotenziale des Films

The Routledge Companion to Literature and Emotion shows how the "affective turn" in the humanities applies to literary studies. Deftly combining the scientific elements with the literary, the book provides a theoretical and topical introduction to reading literature and emotion. Looking at a variety of formats including novels, drama, film, graphic fiction, and lyric poetry the book also includes focus on specific authors such as Shakespeare, Chaucer, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, and Viet Thanh Nguyen. The volume introduces the theoretical groundwork, covering such categories as affect theory, affective neuroscience, cognitive science, evolution, and history of emotions. It examines the range of emotions that play a special role in literature, including happiness, fear, aesthetic delight, empathy, and sympathy, as well as aspects of literature (style, narrative voice, and others) that bear on emotional response. Finally, it explores ethical and political concerns that are often intertwined with emotional response, including racism, colonialism, disability, ecology, gender, sexuality, and trauma. Several poems in the Hebrew Psalter include voices that may be assigned to more than one speaker. Rather than arguing in favor of one particular speaker and silencing the others, my study approaches this ambiguity of voice as a genuine poetic characteristic. A brief review of ambiguity in the Psalter more broadly and some hermeneutical inspiration from Jeremiah’s polyphonic discourse provide the necessary foundations for this endeavor. Three case studies (Psalms 109, 32, and 45) model how to hear ambiguous voices rather than resolving and reducing their harmonies.

Dieses Buch widmet sich den Erzähltraditionen um drei gesetzlose Helden, die in England, Deutschland und Nordamerika ansässig waren: Robin Hood, Klaus Störtebeker und Jesse James üben eine bis heute anhaltende Faszination aus. Im Mythos des Gesetzlosen finden gesellschaftliche Diskurse um Recht und Gerechtigkeit, um Herrschaft und Widerstand, um Souveränität und Legitimität einen narrativen Ausdruck. Erzählungen, in denen Räuber, Piraten oder Banditen zu Rebellen und schließlich zu Helden avancieren, gestalten die Widersprüche innerhalb rechtlich geordneter Gesellschaften literarisch. Rechtsordnungen besitzen einen sozialen und einen territorialen Aspekt. In der narrativen Darstellung historischer Raumkonstellationen wird die Vorstellung vom Recht als konstituierendem gesellschaftlichem Faktor anschaulich. Die vorliegende Studie eröffnet eine neue Perspektive auf die Bedeutung der heroischen Gesetzlosigkeit als einem Phänomen der sozialen und räumlichen Transgression. This book attends to three outlaw heroes from England, Germany, and North America. Robin Hood, Klaus Stoertebeker, and Jesse James still fascinate people today. The myth of the outlaw expresses social discourses about law and justice, government and resistance, and sovereignty and legitimacy. Stories in which robbers, pirates, or bandits advance to become rebels and heroes give literary form to the contradictions of the legal order. Law has a social and spatial aspect. The depiction of historio-spatial constellations in the narratives reveals how law is imagined as a social relation. This study of mythic spaces of lawlessness opens up a new perspective on the meaning of heroic outlawry as a phenomenon of social and spatial transgression.

This project addresses the problem of Bible translations that appear wooden as a result of following a source language text too closely. It examines what effect a discourse workshop focusing on receptor language structures had on translators and their revisions to selected Scripture texts in three translation projects in Liberia. The article evaluates the process, material, and outcomes of the workshop and gives recommendations for improvement and further training.

Um 1900 war das medizinische Phänomen der Neurasthenie zu einem allgemeinen Störungsbild angewachsen, an dem sich das Unbehagen an der Moderne manifestierte. Die Neurasthenie war immer mehr als das psychische Leiden einzelner – sie war auch der Preis, den Gesellschaft für den Fortschritt zu zahlen hatte. Vor allem im frühen Werk, so in Buddenbrooks und Tonio Kröger, versammeln sich diese Themen wie in einem Brennglas: Zwischen Degeneration und Psychologie des Selbst ist die Neurasthenie zum Symptom einer Krise des bürgerlichen Subjekts geworden; so kann z.B. aus heutiger Sicht die Symptomatik Thomas Buddenbrooks als erste Fallvignette in der Geschichte des Burnouts gelesen werden. In diesem Band geht es aber nicht darum, die zur Schablone gewordene Deutung der Neurasthenie als Zeitkrankheit um 1900 auf die Gegenwart zu legen. Vielmehr sollen die Diskurse um Nervenkrankheit und künstlerisches Potential als zeitgebundene Debatten befragt und nach den Bedingungen des Schreibens im Spiegel der Neurasthenie gefragt werden. Die Wiederbesichtigung eines berühmten Topos – Krankheit und Kunst bei Thomas Mann – will damit einen neuen Blick auf ein altes Thema werfen. By 1900, the medical phenomenon of neurasthenia had grown into an image of general disorder manifesting the malaise of modernity. Neurasthenia was always more than the psychological suffering of individuals – it was also the price society had to pay for progress. Thomas Mann, too, was influenced by his contemporaries‘ obsession with time. Especially in his early works, such as Buddenbrooks and Tonio Kröger, these subjects come together as if focussed in a burning glass: between degeneration and the psychology of the self, neurasthenia has become a symptom of a crisis of the bourgeois subject; from today's perspective, for example, the symptomatology of Thomas Buddenbrooks can be read as the first case vignette in the history of burnout. In this volume, however, the aim is not to apply the interpretation of neurasthenia as a contemporary illness around 1900 to the present, which application has by now turned into a simple template. Rather, it aims to interrogate the discourses surrounding neurasthenia and artistic potential as time-bound debates and to ask about the conditions of writing in the mirror of neurasthenia. This revisiting of a famous topos – illness and art in Thomas Mann – thus aims to take a new look at an old topic.

The legacy of colonialism in Northern Ireland has created an ideological divide between Irish nationalism and British unionism through which many questions of political economy are sorted, including questions of conflict, peace and European integration. This paper examines and considers how divergent nationalist discourses surrounding European integration have developed in Northern Ireland throughout history. This divergence can be linked to the fundamentally different and conflicting historical understandings these nationalist projects have of identity, borders and governance.

Historically, grammarians have viewed tenses as simple, unanalysable pieces of grammatical information. Portmanteau tenses may combine tense, aspect, and modality, but these are the main categories. Suzanne Fleischman has proposed a radically new paradigm in which not only verbal forms but entire discourse contexts are analysed as clusters of oppositional properties to which markedness values apply. It is in the interaction of the cluster of properties associated with a verbal form and those associated with its discourse context that we find the locus of verbal meaning. This interactive meaning is illustrated by examples from Psalm 18, demonstrating that morphological forms have the effect of either drawing non-prototypical situations closer to the prototype or drawing situations farther away from the prototype.

The paper analyses the role of social media in shifting the climate change discourse in the North Atlantic region. Changes in the media environment have removed traditional gatekeepers of information dissemination and empowered new kinds of actors to reach large audiences. Yet, the techniques and the particular messaging through which these audiences can be reached has had to change as well. Messages spread widely on social media if they get shared, liked, retweeted frequently. They need to provoke a reaction in their audience, that leads the audience to actively respond to the messages, be it only with a mouse click. Within the climate change field two new kinds of actors have the potential to seize upon this new opportunity structure: climate sceptics and pro-climate activist social movements. Through a qualitative social media analysis, this paper compares the specific messaging strategies these two communities have deployed. It finds that the climate strike movement, notably led by Greta Thunberg, could effectively seize the opportunities social media provide to reach large audiences. By contrast, climate sceptics have been significantly less successful. Counter-intuitively, the paper finds that digitization can not only empower tech-savvy individuals, but also specific, comparatively low tech, and hitherto marginalized individuals. Notably, young women, if they can draw on their vulnerability, aesthetics, and emotional messaging, can acquire high attention scores when advocating for political change.
