"Her Infinite Variety" spins the rollicking tale of the devilish yet wholly beguiling Clara Hoyt through the tumultuous, heady times of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. From the time she enthralls the first of her husbands, Clara charts a wildly entertaining course to the inner sanctum of New York's aristocracy and to the boardrooms of the publishing world.

In addition to its importance to the study of the development of Lennox as a novelist, Harriot Stuart is significant as well for its heroine who, while possessing many of the outward characteristics of the sentimental heroine of the day, ultimately breaks with this tradition to stand as a model for the strong, passionate, and individualistic heroines who were to become so important to the English novel in the second half of the eighteenth century and beyond Written in the popular memoir form, The Life of Harriot Stuart is also intriguing to us for what it reveals, via the use Lennox herself made of it later in her life, of the struggles of an ambitious, shrewd, independent-minded woman writer to be at once professionally accepted and thus economically secure, and yet to maintain her identity. Faced with a literary marketplace where professional well-being necessitated female deference to such influential male writers as Johnson and Richardson, and a marriage that required the same of her as a wife, Lennox allowed the facts of Harriot's life to be viewed as autobiographical. The life of her first heroine seems to have provided Lennox with an escape, serving as a kind of wish-fulfillment later in a life that did not give her opportunities for strong, passionate, individualistic behavior As several critics have shown, Harriot Stuart adds to our knowledge of the facts of Lennox's life, yet the novel also reveals the subversive, sustaining power of fiction for the eighteenth-century woman writer faced with the question of female identity and self-revelation/identification. Harriot Stuart is also one of the first British novels partially set in America and is also interesting for its innovative use of the captivity narrative as a vehicle for social criticism. Assuming her audience's familiarity with works in the popular genre, such as Mary Rowlandson's The Sovereignty and Goodness of God ... A Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration, published in Boston in 1682, Lennox introduces the savage, as she does the pirate, only to question their validity as stereotypical manifestations of the criminal and violent

This volume offers an exploration of interwar women's fictions and their complex intersections with cinema. Interrogating a range of writings, from newspapers and magazines to middlebrow and modernist fictions, the book takes the reader through the diverse print and storytelling media that women constructed around interwar film-going, arguing that literary forms came to constitute an intermedial gendered cinema culture at this time. Using detailed case studies, this book draws upon new archival research, industrial analysis and close textual readings to consider cinema's place in the fictions and critical writings of major literary figures such as Winifred Holtby, Stella Gibbons, Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Elinor Glyn, C. A. Lejeune and Iris Barry. Through the lens of feminist film historiography, Off to the Pictures presents a bold new view of interwar cinema culture, read through the creative reflections of the women who experienced it

"With her first full-length poetry collection, Warsan Shire introduces us to a young girl, who, in the absence of a nurturing guide, makes her own stumbling way towards womanhood. Drawing from her own life and the lives of loved ones, as well as pop culture and news headlines, Shire finds vivid, unique details in the experiences of refugees and immigrants, mothers and daughters, Black women, and teenage girls. In Shire's hands, lives spring into fullness. This is noisy life: full of music and weeping and surahs and sirens and birds. This is fragrant life: full of blood and perfume and shisha smoke and jasmine and incense. This is polychrome life: full of henna and moonlight and lipstick and turmeric and kohl"--

Annunciation -- By design -- Terms of agreement -- Objects of desire -- Old hope -- Security questions -- Make believe -- Wants and needs -- Brenda -- Now you know -- Separation. "In these eleven short stories, thrilling desire and melancholic yearning animate women's lives - from the brink of adulthood, to the labyrinthine path between twenty and thirty, to middle age, when certain possibilities quietly elapse. With powerful observation and mordant humour, Clare Sestanovich opens up a fictional world where intimate and uncomfortable truths lie hidden in plain sight."--Provided by publisher

Constellations follows Tess Lee and Jack Miller after three years of marriage as they navigate the meaning of love and family over a series of holidays. Tess is a wildly successful and world-famous novelist. Her inspirational books explore our innermost struggles and the human need to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Jack is a former federal agent. After spending decades immersed in a violent world, a residue remains. Both healing from past trauma, together they have finally built the life they wish to live. What will happen to their blissful union when Jack’s childhood family resurfaces? When Tess and Jack visit the Millers for Christmas, how will insecurity, a sense of missed opportunities, and the need for redemption test their relationship? When a terrible accident threatens everything in an instant, will they learn the true meaning of unconditional love? Their loved ones are along for the ride: Omar, Tess’s sarcastic best friend who calls her Butterfly; the female president of the United States, with whom Tess talks politics and bakes cookies; Joe, Jack’s friend from the Bureau who understands the sacrifices he’s made; Bobby and Gina, their younger friends who never fail to lighten the mood; and the Miller family. Constellations is a novel about family – those into which we’re born and those we create – the human desire to belong and feel connected, the true nature of intimacy, and the power of love to heal and redeem. Written as unfolding action, Constellations is a poignant novel that moves fluidly between melancholy, humor, and joy. It can be read entirely for pleasure, selected for book clubs, or used as supplemental reading in a variety of courses in communication, psychology, social work, sociology, or women’s studies/gender studies

A funny, gripping and surprising story of a mixed-race British woman who goes in search of the African father she never knew, by award-winning author Chibundu Onuzo. Anna grew up in England with her white mother and knowing very little about her African father. In middle age, after separating from her husband and with her daughter all grown up, she finds herself alone and wondering who she really is. Her mother's death leads her to find her father's student diaries, chronicling his involvement in radical politics in 1970s London. She discovers that he eventually became the president - some would say the dictator - of Bamana in West Africa. She also discovers that he is still alive. She decides to track him down and so begins a funny, painful, fascinating journey, and an exploration of race, identity and what we pass on to our children

Preliminary Material -- Introduction -- Women, Politics and Fiction in 1930s France -- Gender and Genre: The Political Novel -- Fictional Representations of Female Commitment -- Politics and Female Sexuality -- Politics and the Maternal Body -- Conclusion -- Bibliography -- Index. This study is the first to examine the contribution made by women writers to politically committed literature in 1930s France. Its purpose is to bring to light the work of female authors of left-wing fiction whose novels are comparable to those of well-known male practitioners of littérature engagée , such as Paul Nizan and Louis Aragon. It analyses the work of Madeleine Pelletier, Simone Téry, Edith Thomas, Henriette Valet and Louise Weiss in the context of the inter-war models of committed literature in relation to which they were produced. Consideration of this body of fictional texts, not previously brought together by literary historians, shows how women were able to relate to fiction and to politics in inter-war France. Situating the novels within their social, historical, literary and political environment, the book contributes to the literary and cultural history of twentieth century France. The analysis of inter-war political writing by women calls into question the criteria against which women’s writing has been evaluated by feminist scholarship
