    "In Veiled Figures, Teresa Heffernan explores how the clash of civilizations is perpetuated by the rhetoric of veiling and unveiling. Drawing on travel narratives, harem literature, and other stories, Heffernan argues that women's bodies have been used to exacerbate the divide between religion and reason in the eighteenth century, the Islamic umma and the Western nation in the nineteenth, and Islamism and global capitalism in the contemporary period. Through the study of the writings of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Anna Bowman Dodd, Demetra Vaka Brown, Zeyneb Hanoum, and others, Heffernan's book demonstrates the ways in which these works complicate and interrupt these divides, opening up new opportunities for a more constructive dialogue between East and West."--

Besonders in den »Lehrjahren« erfindet der Protagonist bewußt und unbewußt die Welt als ein Zeichengefüge, um sich der Außenwelt als Produkt seiner Innenwelt zu bemächtigen. Dies verdeutlicht die semiotische Analyse der Schleiersymbolik, die den Zusammenhang der krisenhaften Identitätsgenese des anfänglichen Narzißten Wilhelm Meister in den entscheidenden Stationen seines Lebenswegs konsequent reflektiert und dabei das Widerspiel von Ethos und Eros bestimmt. Here the protagonist invents the world, both consciously and unconsciously, as a system of signs enabling him to empower himself of the outer world as a product of his inner world.     Der Schleier fungiert in seinen buchstäblich vielfältigen Erscheinungen und Bedeutungen als Motiv und Metapher des Mediums. Ausgehend von seiner Konjunktur in aktuellen geisteswissenschaftlichen Debatten, werden im vorliegenden Band textile Modelle der Bild- und Textproduktion/-rezeption untersucht, die ästhetische und erkenntnistheoretische Fragestellungen aufs engste verknüpfen. Der Schleier wird dabei als ein Dispositiv verstanden, das regelt, was und wie es zu sehen und zu wissen gibt. In der Metaphorik des Ver- und Enthüllens spiegeln sich grundlegende anthropologische Deutungssysteme wie jene von Natur und Wahrheit, Geheimnis und Offenbarung oder Körper und Nacktheit. Als Modell der Vermittlung unterläuft der Schleier jedoch die Logik des Dualismus und stellt Elemente für eine Epistemologie des Dritten zwischen Diaphanie und Opazität in Aussicht. Nicht zuletzt deshalb könnte er sich im Rahmen des interdisziplinären Dialogs als master trope einer Mediengeschichte erweisen, die weder gemeinsame strukturelle Probleme von Bild und Text noch ihre jeweilige Besonderheit aus den Augen verliert.     Die Studie verhandelt Bedeutungsveränderungen der Metapher des >SchleiersBild< verstanden, dessen Bedeutung von seinem Gebrauch nicht isoliert und dessen kulturelle Funktion nur innerhalb seiner literarisch-visuellen Repräsentationsbedingungen aufgezeigt werden kann. Die Studie ist damit an den Schnittstellen von Textualität und Visualität angesiedelt und untersucht den metaphorischen Transport des Schleiers zwischen den Medienkulturen. So wird deutlich, dass der ästhetische Diskurs teils als Inversion, teils als Verlängerung der Fetischismuskritik seit der Aufklärung gelesen werden kann - und umgekehrt.
