    The general perception that a good command of English is enough to gain access and to be successful in higher education hides the complexity of learning and teaching in multilingual environments, and this book shows that all higher education environments are multilingual to some extent. Strategies like translation, interpreting and switching from one language to another not only support learning but also build competence for multilingual professional environments. Whether institutions focus on widening access to minoritised communities or whether they want to attract more international students, the book argues that a multilingual pedagogy is needed to improve student access and success. Building on work by Nancy Hornberger, Colin Baker and Ofelia García, the book extends strategies and techniques from bilingual education at school level to multilingual higher education

    In recent years ideological wars have been waged in higher education over the curriculum in general and the traditional literary canon in particular. The "great books" philosophy of a liberal education has come to be identified with such political conservatives as William Bennett, Lynne Cheney, and the late Allan Bloom. In this book, Laura Ford offers an argument for maintaining the great books of the Western tradition as the centerpiece of a liberal education, but does so from the unusual perspective of a liberal, a feminist, and a mainstream academic administrator. She argues that to equate the great texts of the Western tradition with conservatism is to confuse the ideology of the texts themselves with the ideology of one group of recent advocates for the texts This book undertakes to rebut the allegation of obsolescence implicit within the widely-used acronym DWEMs ("Dead White European Males") by demonstrating the continuing centrality of these texts to Western culture as it is experienced today. This is accomplished by applying five of the uncontested greatest works of the Western tradition to several of our society's most complex and divisive social issues: Homer, Plato, King James Bible, Shakespeare, The American founding documents, Sexual Harassment, Rape, Homophobia, Abortion, The Right to Die, The Death Penalty Liberal Education and the Canon is not written for the specialist; it is intended to be both informative to scholars and accessible to persons with no prior familiarity with the five texts discussed. Written in lucid, jargon-free prose, it is a unique blending of the timeless with the timely. Drawing from sources as long ago as Homer and as recent as current headlines, this book makes the continuity of the human experience evident

    "Queer Precarity in Higher Education looks at queer scholars pushing against institutional structures, and the queer knowledge that gets pushed out by universities. It provides insight into the work of, in and beyond academia as it is un-done in the contemporary (post)Covid moment, not least by queer academic-activists. This radical un-doing represents cycles of queer precarity, pragmatism and participation both situating and questioning the 'queer arrival' of institutionalized programmes and presences (e.g. queer and gender studies degrees, prominent and public feminist academics). In this book, the contributors push back against contemporary educational precarity, mobilizing queer insight and insistence; and push back against confinement of the University, socially and spatially. The collection brings together academic-activist perspectives to extend understandings of experiences of marginalization and inequality in higher education. It also documents the diversity of tactics with which queers negotiate and resist the various, shifting and interconnected forms of precarity and privilege found on the edges of academia. Contributors consider these issues from inside/outside academia and across career course, challenging the 'queer arrival' as emanating outward from the university to the community, from the academic to the activist, or from a state of privilege to a place of precarity"
