    ger: Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit thematisiert das Konzept der Täuschung und die Relevanz einzelner Täuschungsvariationen in Niccolò Machiavellis Komödie La Mandragola, ein bis heute weltbekanntes und oft rezitiertes italienisches Renaissance-Theaterstück. Basierend auf der Frage nach dem Täuschungskonzept soll geklärt werden, inwiefern die christlich geprägte Weltsicht der Menschen im Cinquecento hinsichtlich einer dämonischen Täuschung und Machiavellis Komödie korrelieren und wie dies wiederum auf den Menschen wirkt.Bevor jedoch das Werk als solches hinsichtlich der Spielarten der Täuschung analysiert wird, sollen die unterschiedlichen Variationen, die ihre Wurzeln bereits in der Antike haben, diskutiert und miteinander verglichen werden. Denn obwohl sich deren Merkmale weitgehend decken und eine bis ins 16. Jahrhundert andauernde Verflechtung der Variationen bemerkbar ist, können Unterschiede zwischen den einzelnen Variationen festgestellt werden. Komplementär werden aufgrund der mittelalterlichen Weltanschauung, das von magischen Vorgängen geprägt war, die Täuschungskonzepte aus einer dämonologischen Perspektive betrachtet. Es soll veranschaulicht werden, dass bereits in der griechisch-hellenistischen Weltanschauung Dämonen eine zentrale Rolle spielten, die in die christlichen Lehren mit aufgenommen wurden und das Leben der Menschen prägten. Dadurch soll ersichtlich werden, dass eine Lenkung des Menschen durch übernatürliche Wesen tief in ihrer Vorstellung verankert war. Anschließend werden die Figuren in Niccolò Machiavellis La Mandragola hinsichtlich ihrer Täuschungsakte aus einer anthropologisch-strukturellen Perspektive analysiert, um ebendiesen dämonischen Einfluss darzulegen, der im Spiritusgedanken und im Weltbild des Menschen in der Renaissance verwurzelt war. Nicht zuletzt soll auch ersichtlich werden, dass die Verflechtung der Täuschungsvariationen auch in den konkreten Täuschungsakten der Figuren in La Mandragola wiedergefunden werden kann. eng: Until today, La Mandragola is a world-reknown as well as often recited Italian Renaissance stage play. This thesis examines the concept of deception, and goes into detail in regard to the importance of variations of deception in Niccolò Machiavelli’s comedy La Mandragola. Based on the question of the applicable concept of deception, it elaborates on the impact, interplay and correlation of Christian values and the dominant prevalent worldviews of people living in Cinquecento in times of the Renaissance. Before elaborating on the variety of deception in La Mandragola, it is the intention to discuss and compare the various variations, whose origin can be traced back to the ancient world. Albeit, the general characteristics of variations are similar and recognizably intertwined until the 16th century, it is possible to detect slight differences between single variations of deception. In addition, the author examines the concepts of deception from a demonologic perspective, which back in the day was a prevalent worldview and insinuates the influence of magical guidance in peoples’ lives. The paper illustrates further that demons had occupied a central role within society, already within greek worldviews. This notion was subsequently included in Christian teachings and had severe impact on peoples’ lives in the past. It is the author’s intention to show that guidance by supernatural beings was deeply anchored in the predominant historic mindset.Later, from an anthropological-structural perspective, the thesis analyses the characters of La Mandragola based on the various characters’ specific acts of deception. This is done in order to showcase the demonic impact of the power of the concept of the Spirit, which was deeply rooted in the worldview during the period of the Renaissance. Last but not least, it becomes evident that the intertwined variations of deception can be found consistently throughout the play based on the deceptive actions of the various characters.

    A devoted reader of autobiographies and memoirs, Roger J. Porter has observed in recent years a surprising number of memoirs by adult children whose fathers have led secret lives. Some of the fathers had second families; some had secret religious lives; others have been criminals, liars, or con men. Struck by the intensely human drama of secrecy and deception played out for all to see, Porter explores the phenomenon in great depth. In Bureau of Missing Persons he examines a large number of these works-eighteen in all-placing them in a wide literary and cultural context and considering the ethical quandaries writers face when they reveal secrets so long and closely held.Among the books Porter treats are Paul Auster's The Invention of Solitude, Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir Fun Home, Essie Mae Washington-Williams's Dear Senator (on her father, Strom Thurmond), Bliss Broyard's One Drop, Mary Gordon's The Shadow Man, and Geoffrey Wolff's The Duke of Deception. He also discusses Nathaniel Kahn's documentary film, My Architect. These narratives inevitably look inward to the writer as well as outward to the parent. The autobiographical children are compelled, if not consumed, by a desire to know. They become detectives, piecing together clues to fill memory voids, assembling material and archival evidence, public and private documents, letters, photographs, and iconic physical objects to track down the parent

    "This is the first full-length study of the representation of deceit and lies in classical Athens. Dr. Hesk traces the ways in which Athenian drama, democratic oratory and elite prose writing construct and theorise a relationship between dishonesty and civic identity. He focuses on the ideology of military trickery, notions of the 'noble lie' and the developing associations of rhetorical language with deceptive communication. Deception and Democracy in Classical Athens combines close analysis of Athenian texts with lively critiques of modern theorists and classical scholars. Athenian democratic culture was crucially informed by a nuanced, anxious and dynamic discourse on the problems and opportunities which deception presented for its citizenry. Mobilising comparisons with twentieth-century democracies, the author argues that Athenian literature made deception a fundamental concern for democratic citizenship. This ancient discourse on lying highlights the dangers of modern resignation and postmodern complacency concerning the politics and morality of deception."--Jacket
