Language identity refers to a single language and the linguistic identity of a person or group. It is influenced by political, economic and social factors. For an ethnic minority, language is often the most important characteristic of the identity. Therefore the recognition, promotion and acceptance are fundamental. In Tarvisio and the Valcanale are present four ethnic groups: the Italians, the Fiulians, the Germans and the Slovenes. Their history is marked by several political changes, migration movements and the promotion or suppression of different ethnical and linguistic groups as part of the Bishopric of Bamberg, the Habsburg monarchy and the Italian state. The local society is aware of the minority groups. The Italian language dominates nowadays in all context, the languages of the minority as well as the dialects are disappearing form informal situations. German is seen as the most important minority language for the economy and the social progression and the cultural connections with Austria are appreciated. The Friulian and Slovenian languages are mostly used as spoken languages, German is partially also used as written language. Parents try to promote the multilingualism of their children, but this works only up to a certain point. Media is rarely consumed in the languages of the minorities and younger generations tend to prefer English content. There is still awareness of the ethnic richness of the area, but the languages are becoming less important for the local identity and the identification happens mostly through culture and traditions. eng: Identity is dynamic and describes individuals or groups. Main description: Minglang Zhou's highly erudite and well-researched volume on the policies concerning writing reforms for China’s minorities since 1949 provides an original and well-reasoned summary of a complex process. It documents how different script reforms meet dramatically different fates according to local preferences, history, cross-border ties, and the vitality of previously-used scripts. In a style accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, Zhou's book is of interest to language planners, sinologists, applied linguists, writing theorists, and ethnologists

What is the role of language in ethnic churches? This new and much needed account of the Australian experience examines the issues faced by sixteen congregations, together representing different periods of Australia’s migration history, as well as different languages, cultural backgrounds and Christian denominations. Drawing on the rich data provided by the study, the concept of "language–religion ideology" is developed to describe the nature of the relationship between language and religion which is exhibited by a denomination, with far-reaching implications for multilingual and multicultural societies

Language is all around us as it is displayed in texts on shop windows, commercial signs, posters, official notices, etc. Given a multitude of languages there, it does not come as a surprise that an increasing number of researchers have taken a closer look at languages on signs in the public space. The book reports on studies of the linguistic landscape in cities in countries around the globe: Israel, Japan, Thailand, the Netherlands (Friesland) and Spain (the Basque Country). Their cultural, socio-economic and political circumstances are very divergent. Multimillion cities are included such as Bangkok and Tokyo, but also smaller cities such as Ljouwert-Leeuwarden and Donostia-San Sebastian. Multilingualism turns out to be an important dimension of the linguistic landscape everywhere, as well as the reflection of the process of globalisation, visible through the use of English. The study of the linguistic landscape is applied here as a means to increase our understanding of multilingualism and future directions are outlined

This book focuses on the increase of urban multilingualism in Europe as a consequence of processes of migration and minorisation. It offers multidisciplinary, crossnational and crosslinguistic perspectives on immigrant minority languages at home and in school in six multicultural cities across Europe. In each of these cities, Germanic or Romance languages have a dominant status in public life. This Multilingual Cities Project is based on large-scale empirical findings and has been carried out under the auspices of the European Cultural Foundation, in Amsterdam. Part I offers multidisciplinary background information on phenomenological, demographic, language rights and educational aspects of the status of immigrant minority communities and their languages in a variety of international contexts. Part II offers methodological considerations on the Multilingual Cities Project. In addition, it presents both national and local perspectives on multilingualism in each of the six cities under consideration. Each chapter provides information on the distribution and vitality of immigrant minority languages spoken at home and on the status of these languages in primary and secondary schools. Part III offers crossnational and crosslinguistic perspectives on the twenty most prominent languages that emerge from the study. The focus is again on the two major private and public domains in which language transmission may or may not occur: the home and the school, respectively. The book offers a challenging outlook on the educational management of language diversity in the increasingly multicultural and multilingual context of European nation-states

Zusammenfassung d. Verlags: Minglang Zhou's highly erudite and well-researched volume on the policies concerning writing reforms for China?'s minorities since 1949 provides an original and well-reasoned summary of a complex process. It documents how different script reforms meet dramatically different fates according to local preferences, history, cross-border ties, and the vitality of previously-used scripts. It convincingly shows that no single variable is decisive in the success of a script, and that language planners' fixation with technical details is doomed to failure, without careful coordination of extra-code factors. It also documents the little-known Sino-Soviet cooperation in the area of writing reforms. In a style accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, Zhou's book is of interest to language planners, sinologists, applied linguists, writing theorists, and ethnologists
