    Las reflexiones sobre la actividad de traducción y sus resultados han estado marcadas históricamente por el mayor o menor alejamiento respecto de la obra original. También a través del tiempo se ha intentado dar respuesta a la pregunta ¿qué es una buena traducción? con la formulación de reglas generales, es decir, prescribiendo. Afortunadamente, hacia mediados del siglo XX, comienza a sistematizarse el estudio de la actividad de traducción y se entiende la complejidad que la sustenta, ya que en ella confluyen aspectos diversos, tanto lingüísticos como cognitivos, culturales o comparativos. De allí en más, los estudios sobre la traducción abandonan la prescripción y asumen una mirada descriptiva y explicativa, que se relaciona con las normas del género discursivo que se traduce, con las normas sociales del público para el cual se traduce y con las que se establecen entre la editorial o cliente y el traductor. Desde las aparentemente ingenuas definiciones de traducción, pasando por un recorte histórico de la evolución de su estudio, este libro recorre la relación entre lingüística y traducción, discute la evolución de los conceptos de unidad de traducción y equivalencia, expone la problematización del sentido en la lexicología y la terminología, que son campos afines con la traducción, e introduce la relación entre cultura y traducción.

    The article researches the history and sociological substantiation of ELF (English as Lingua Franca) in Azerbaijan. The author indicates the unique historical role of mercantile activities in extending the borders of EFL. It is also stated that the English language would be on a narrow scale long before ELF was used in Azerbaijan. The paper argues that scientific and linguistic literature supports the idea that English as a Foreign Language (EFL) served as an extension for ELF usage. At the same time, some linguists make a controversial statement that the reason English is spreading around the world at the moment is because of its utility as a lingua franca.It also analyses the distinct stages of ELF use in Azerbaijan and illustrates the historical facts necessitating the vast in-country spread and usage of ELF. Following the in-depth analyses of ELF, the paper makes some new remarks: 1) There are at least two varieties of English and simplified (we may call it mere or simple English); 2) Global English existed long before English existed; 3) Until people speak English to their kids, it is usually called ELF; 4) ELF is more extensive; 5) Simple English is more intensive by its nature, and so on.The author argues that the content and concept of ELF's usage is more significant than the concept of simple or mere English usage because the former assumes much-embracing features rather than the "simple English choice". That means, unlike English, ELF has the following specific qualities: 1) It is not spontaneous but strictly purposeful and pragmatic (but are these not for the sake of any foreign language use); 2) It emerges and develops in close connection with "communication needs"; 3) It includes further behaviour of communicators, whether to use or abandon it; 4) It has a distinct cause-and-effect chain in the socio-political and economic situation in the areas of its usage; 5) It does not come from family nurture and instructions but is taken for the needs of its urgency; 6) Side forces (external, socio-political) ...

    Gender linguistics is an important part of gender discourse. The main reason is the fact that people understand and create the world through the language they speak. In this context, “masculinity” and “femininity” are formed and developed differently due to languages and cultures. The study of languages from the perspective of gender linguistics is important for understanding the peculiarities of cultures and intercultural relations. Within the framework of cross-cultural pragmatics, we analyzed the discourse of men and women at the theoretical level, studied the causes of gender differentiation in language. In order to study the causes of gender differentiation in language, we analyzed male and female discourse within the framework of intercultural pragmatics at the theoretical level of the cognitive paradigm and pragmatic semiology. The article deals with the pragmatic value of discourse from the point of view of the cultural code, that is, the semiotic expression of national cultural norms. Cognitive-discursive analysis is carried out on the basis of gender representations. The author uses the type of discourse, which is reflected at the level of topics, the use of communicative methods and tactics, as well as national concepts, to demonstrate the conditionality of the functioning of gender representations. The language that society uses in relation to men and women varies from society to society and from culture to culture. The fact that the dominant ideology in society is determined mainly by men makes women passive and condemns them to live in a language defined by men. The article bases on the studies from a feminist perspective on language and gender relations and show that women are more prone to inflectional sentences because of the sense of insecurity attributed to them.

    Haben Sie schon gegessen? Sicher finden Sie diese Anrede höchst merkwürdig; völlig deplaziert erscheint es Ihnen vermutlich, Sie nach dem Essen zu fragen. Mir ging es ähnlich, als mir diese Frage bei meinem ersten China-Aufenthalt 1982 bei zufälligen Begegnungen auf dem Campus der Universität, an der ich gearbeitet habe, gestellt wurde. Ich habe sie in Richtung Vorbereitung auf eine kommende Essenseinladung oder zumindest auf den Vorschlag, jetzt gemeinsam essen zu gehen, interpretiert und nach dem Prinzip der Ehrlichkeit beantwortet. Wenn ich gerade selbst hungrig war, habe ich "nein" gesagt. Dies führte nun aber keinesfalls zum erwarteten zweiten Schritt der von mir vermuteten Sequenz, nämlich dem Vorschlag "dann lassen Sie uns doch in ein Lokal gehen" – mein Gegenüber lachte etwas irritiert und entfernte sich von mir. Damals habe ich die Chinesen ein wenig seltsam gefunden und diese mich mit Sicherheit auch. Später erst habe ich erfahren, dass die Frage "nin che guo le ma?" eine ganz einfache Begrüßung darstellt, die etwa unserem "Guten Tag" entspricht. Man antwortet mit "ja, ich habe schon gegessen." Damit ist die Sequenz beendet und man geht seiner Wege. Begrüßungsrituale gehören ganz offensichtlich zum Feld der Höflichkeit, welches das Thema des vorliegenden Artikels ausmacht. Höflichkeit im Vergleich der Kulturen führt uns zu Unterschieden in ritualisierten Umgangsformen miteinander, zu Etikette, Benehmen, Rücksichtnahme, Imagearbeit im Gespräch.

    "Language is a central element of any culture and society. For each human, it is the main instrument for perceiving and evaluating the world around himself or herself. Language is, therefore, a central element of identity: identity implies the perception of one's own strengths and weaknesses, the evaluation of one's own past, the visions of one's own future. Identity provides aims, direction and consistency to the actions of men or women. This self-image or identity is developed through interaction with other people; one's self-image, at least to some degree, must be shared and validated by others. Language plays a central role. To speak a common language per se creates a feeling of communality (Sapir 1951: 157; Whorf 1956; Weber 1964: 305ff.; Goebl et al. 1996). Adequate mastery of a language is a decisive determinant of a satisfactory communication with other people, and also for social recognition, self-confidence and the feeling of security in the world. Linguistic problems, from stuttering to dumbness, probably entail the strongest harm to one's self-image and self-consciousness. In the first part of this essay, I will elaborate the relationship between language and identity and propose a central thesis. Subsequently, I describe five typical, different social constellations in which a change of language can occur. Here, I will present examples from different linguistic areas of the world.     Beschreibungen der verschiedenen Sprachen sind grundsätzlich unvollständig bzw. lückenhaft. Das liegt an der Komplexität des Phänomens Sprache, aber auch an dem Entwicklungsstand und dem Umfang der einzelnen Linguistiktraditionen, die diesbezüglich etliche Unterschiede aufweisen. Daher kann der Blick auf andere Sprachen/ Sprachbeschreibungen auf die Lücken bzw. Unzulänglichkeiten der einzelnen Sprachbeschreibungen aufmerksam machen. Das bildet den Ausgangspunkt der interkulturellen Systemgrammatik. Wenn Sprachen/Sprachbeschreibungen aufeinander bezogen werden, kann das eine vervollständigende Funktion für die beteiligten Sprachbeschreibungen haben. Man kann Phänomene bzw. Probleme aufdecken, die in der vorhandenen grammatischen Beschreibung nicht erfasst sind bzw. nicht existieren, und/oder adäquatere Erklärungsmuster für gemeinsame Phänomene oder Lösungen für Problembereiche finden. Dieser Beitrag will die Voraussetzungen der interkulturellen Systemgrammatik und an Hand des grammatischen Transfers zwischen dem Deutschen und Arabischen ihre Vorgehensweisen und Erkenntnisinteressen vorstellen. ; Descriptions of various languages are fundamentally incomplete and fragmentary. This is due to the complexity of language, and also to the extent and level of development of linguistic traditions that have quite a few differences among them. Therefore, the views of other languages and/or language descriptions may draw attention to the gaps or inadequacies of the individual language descriptions. This is the starting point for intercultural formal grammar. When languages and/or language descriptions are related to each other both descriptions may gain and become more comprehensive. Problems or phenomena not represented in existing grammatical descriptions may be uncovered and/or more adequate explanations for similar phenomena or solutions to problem areas can be found.
