Violent Women in Contemporary Cinema explores the representation of homicidal women in six contemporary films: Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 2009), Trouble Every Day (Claire Denis, 2001), Baise-moi (Coralie Thinh Thi and Virginie Despentes, 2000), Heavenly Creatures (Peter Jackson, 1994), Monster (Patty Jenkins, 2003) and The Reader (Stephen Daldry, 2008). Violent women in cinema pose an exciting challenge to viewers when women kill, they overturn cultural ideas of 'typical' feminine behaviour. Janice Loreck explores how cinema creatively depicts the violent woman in response to this challenge. Departing from earlier studies that focus on popular and exploitation cinema, the book takes a unique focus on violent women in art films and other critically-distinguished forms. It explores the appeal that the violent woman holds for spectators within this viewing context. Furthermore, the book also examines how cinema responds to the cultural construction of the violent woman as a conundrum and enigma

Since their development over twenty-five years ago, queer scholarship and politics have been hotly contested fields, equally embraced and dismissed. Amid calls for criminology and criminal justice institutions to respond more effectively to the injustices faced by LGBTIQ people, criminologists have recently developed a Queer Criminology and turned to queer scholarship in the process. This book approaches the Arctic from a postcolonial perspective, taking into account its historical status as a colonised region and new, economically driven forms of colonialism. One catchphrase currently being used to describe these new colonialisms is "the scramble for the Arctic". This cross-disciplinary study, featuring contributions from an international team of experts in the field, offers a set of broadly postcolonial perspectives on the European Arctic, which is taken here as ranging from Greenland and Iceland in the North Atlantic to the upper regions of Norway and Sweden in the European High North. While the contributors acknowledge the renewed scramble for resources that characterises the region, it also argues the need to 'unscramble' the Arctic, wresting it away from its persistent status as a fixed object of western control and knowledge. Instead, the book encourages a reassertion of micro-histories of Arctic space and territory that complicate western grand narratives of technological progress, politico-economic development, and ecological 'state change'. It will be of interest to scholars of Arctic Studies across all disciplines. Graham Huggan is Chair of Commonwealth and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Leeds, UK, where he directs the EU-funded 'Arctic Encounters' project. His work cuts across three fields: postcolonial studies, environmental humanities, and tourism studies. His most recently published book is Nature's Saviours: Celebrity Conservationists in the Television Age (2013), and he is currently working on another on the cultural politics of whale-watching. Lars Jensen is an Associate Professor at Cultural Encounters, Roskilde University, Denmark. His main research fields are postcolonial studies and cultural studies, both of which are represented in his latest book, Beyond Britain: Stuart Hall and the Postcolonializing of Anglophone Cultural Studies (2014). Über Gesundheit zu reden funktioniert auf Fachkongressen und im Wartezimmer genauso gut wie auf Partys und Parteitagen. Interessant an all diesen verschiedenen Gesundheitserzählungen sind folgende Fragen: Worüber wird geredet? Wer redet viel und wer wenig? Warum und mit welcher Wirkung wird geredet? Die Erzählforschung untersucht die Funktionsweisen von alltäglichen und wissenschaftlichen Erzählungen und ihre Potenziale, die Wirklichkeit nicht nur zu beschreiben und zu erklären, sondern auch zu beeinflussen. Das Thema Gesundheit unter Erzählperspektive zu beleuchten ist gewinnbringend, denn während die fachlichen Inhalte des Gesundheitsnarrativs sehr weitreichend erkundet werden, sind seine begleitenden erzählerischen Elemente kaum beforscht, obwohl sie z.B. Aufschluss darüber geben können, warum der Waschbrettbauch den Wohlstandsbauch als sichtbares Zeichen von erfolgreicher Lebensführung ablösen konnte und wie das Erzählen diese Wirklichkeitstransformation begleitet hat. Beim faktual-fiktionalen Gesundheitsnarrativ geht es also nicht um die Wahrheit und nichts als die Wahrheit, sondern erzählt wird eine spannende Geschichte über Wohlsein und Wehklagen, tugendhafte und sündige Lebensweisen, fitte Gewinner und matte Verlierer. Here William Roy conducts a historical inquiry into the rise of the large publicly traded American corporation. Departing from the received wisdom, which sees the big, vertically integrated corporation as the result of technological development and market growth that required greater efficiency in larger scale firms, Roy focuses on political, social, and institutional processes governed by the dynamics of power The author shows how the corporation started as a quasi-public device used by governments to create and administer public services like turnpikes and canals and then how it germinated within a system of stock markets, brokerage houses, and investment banks into a mechanism for the organization of railroads. Finally, and most particularly, he analyzes its flowering into the realm of manufacturing, when at the turn of this century, many of the same giants that still dominate the American economic landscape were created. Thus, the corporation altered manufacturing entities so that they were each owned by many people instead of by single individuals as had previously been the case

This book follows the figure of ‘the clever girl’ from the post-war to the present and focuses on the fiction, plays and memoirs of contemporary British women writers. Spurred on by an ethic of meritocracy, the clever girl is now facing austerity and declining social mobility. Though suggesting optimism, a public discourse of ‘opportunity’, ‘aspiration’ and ‘choice’ is often experienced as an anxious and chancy process. In a wide-ranging study, the book explores the struggle to move away from home and traditional notions of femininity; the persistent problems associated with women’s embodiment; the pressures of class and racial divisions; the new subjectivities of the neoliberal era; and the generational conflict underpinning austerity. The book ends with a consideration of feminism’s place as a phantom presence in this history of clever girls. This study will appeal to readers of contemporary women’s writing and to those interested in what has been one of the dominant social narratives of the post-war period from upward to declining mobility 1.
