Preliminary Material -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- The Fantasy: A Psychoanalytic Intertext -- The Fantasy: A Nietzschean Intertext -- A Reader Writes Oneself -- A Reader at the Collège de France -- Elements of an Active Semiology: Space, Detail, Time and the Author -- Lessons from an Amateur -- Works Cited -- Index. ‘I sincerely believe that at the origin of teaching such as this we must always locate a fantasy’. This provoking remark was the starting point of the four lecture courses Roland Barthes taught as professor of literary semiology at the Collège de France . In these last years of his life, Barthes developed a perverse reading theory in which the demonic stupidity of the fantasy becomes an active force in the creation of new ways of thinking and feeling. The perverse art of reading offers the first extensive monograph on these lecture courses. The first part examines the psychoanalytical and philosophical intertexts of Barthes’ ‘active semiology’ (Lacan, Kristeva, Winnicott, Nietzsche, Deleuze and Foucault), while the second part discusses his growing attention for the intimate, bodily involvement in the act of reading. Subsequently, this study shows how Barthes’ phantasmatic reading strategy radically reviews the notions of space, detail and the untimely in fiction, as well as the figure of the author and his own role as a teacher. It becomes clear that the interest of Barthes’ lecture courses goes well beyond semiology and literary criticism, searching the answer to the ethical question par excellence: how to become what one is, how to live a good life

In this innovative examination of works by Poe, Melville, Twain, Nabokov, Barth, and Pynchon, Herbert F. Smith established an aesthetic theory that allows for fresh readings of six problematic texts. He explores how the texts came to be written and what semiotic processes are involved in their creation, and in so doing he opens the way for new theoretical speculation. Texts that do no more than produce data are essentially two-dimensional. Texts that interest as texts have a third dimension. Almost all literary criticism takes place within these three dimensions. For Smith, texts that compel the reader to go beyond of two- or three-dimensional analysis are the most interesting. The technique he develops for reading these works of literature is based on the idea of hyperdimensionality, a metaphor he borrows, along with catastrophe and chaos from science. The works he examines are seen as loci for meaning in which numerous directions and coordinates function simultaneously. Beginning with Roman Jakobson, Smith examines speculations about the metaphor/metonymy dichotomy, invoking along the way Umberto Eco and David Lodge. He quarrels with the notion that metaphor and metonymy are polar, and proposes that the dichotomy be visualized as multi-dimensional, to reflect their complex relationship. As he develops his technique for reading metafiction, he sheds light on the theories of critics as diverse as Derrida, Barthes, and Frye. The tone is exploratory, even playful, engaging the reader in a free play of ideas

Vagrant Writing addresses the semiotic dimension of social change in Renaissance England. From tracta against cosmetics to the Jonsonian masque, from coney-catching pamphlets to the theology of Hooker, Barry Taylor explores what happens to Tudor and Jacobean practices of writing when the ideology of the Word which underpins them -- an ideology of fixed, metaphysically anchored meaning -- must interpret, regulate and contain a social order undergoing radical transformation. The semiotic power of social disorder, the social power of a disorderly semiotics: it is at that intersection of disruptive forces that Vagrant Writing establishes its enquiry. Embracing such topics as the relationship of writing, usury and Narcissism, the links between literary translation and the regulation of female sexuality, the fragmentation of writerly authority and subjectivity in the literary marketplace, and the politics of allegorical interpretation, the book offers a series of connected readings which is at once closely detailed and ambitiously extensive in scope. In its own trespassings beyond the confines of the literary canon and across disciplinary boundaries, Vagrant Writing opens up new directions within the field of English Renaissance writing. In doing so, it makes available fresh perspectives on the relationship between social and discursive domains, and on the paradoxical, self-disputing energies of the Renaissance text

The "place" in the title of Claudia Brodsky's remarkable new book is the intersection of language with building, the marking, for future reference, of material constructions in the world. The "referent" Brodsky describes is not something first found in nature and then named but a thing whose own origin joins language with materiality, a thing marked as it is made to begin with. In the Place of Language: Literature and the Architecture of the Referent develops a theory of the "referent" that is thus also a theory of the possibility of historical knowledge, one that undermines the conventional opposition of language to the real by theories of nominalism and materialism alike, no less than it confronts the mystical conflation of language with matter, whether under the aegis of the infinite reproducibility of the image or the identification of language with "Being."Challenging these equally naive views of language - as essentially immaterial or the only essential matter - Brodsky investigates the interaction of language with the material that literature represents. For literature, Brodsky argues, seeks no refuge from its own inherently iterable, discursive medium in dreams of a technologically-induced freedom from history or an ontological history of language-being. Instead it tells the complex story of historical referents constructed and forgotten, things built into the earth upon which history "takes place" and of which, in the course of history, all visible trace is temporarily effaced. Literature represents the making of history, the building and burial of the referent, the present world of its oblivion and the future of its unearthing, and it can do this because, unlike the historical referent, it literally takes no place, is not tied to any building or performance in space. For the same reason literature can reveal the historical nature of the making of meaning, demonstrating that the shaping and experience of the real, the marking of matter that constitutes historical referents, also defers knowledge of the real to a later date.

Miniature books, eighteenth-century novels, Tom Thumb weddings, tall tales, and objects of tourism and nostalgia: this diverse group of cultural forms is the subject of On Longing, a fascinating analysis of the ways in which everyday objects are narrated to animate or realize certain versions of the world. Originally published in 1984 (Johns Hopkins University Press), and now available in paperback for the first time, this highly original book draws on insights from semiotics and from psychoanalytic, feminist, and Marxist criticism. Addressing the relations of language to experience, the body to scale, and narratives to objects, Susan Stewart looks at the "miniature" as a metaphor for interiority and at the "gigantic" as an exaggeration of aspects of the exterior. In the final part of her essay Stewart examines the ways in which the "souvenir" and the "collection" are objects mediating experience in time and space
