    Abstract ; Im Sinne einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Emotionsforschung, die Affekte und Gefühle auf ihre kulturellen Repräsentationsformen und Bedingungen hin untersucht, wird in historischer Perspektive gezeigt, wie das Narrativ mütterlicher Fürsorge bis heute das kulturelle Verständnis von der Frau formt. Die Analyse eines filmischen (Stephen Daldry The Hours) und eines literarischen Beispiels (Julia Franck Die Mittagsfrau) stellt zwei Werke in den Mittelpunkt, die jeweils eine Doppelperspektive einnehmen, die der Mutter und die des Kindes. Sie gehören zu der Textgruppe, die ein im Weiblichkeitsdiskurs eher tabuisiertes Feld behandeln, nämlich Mütter zu perspektivieren, die ihre Kinder nicht aufopferungsvoll lieben. Sie sind als kritische Reflexionen biologistischer Vorannahmen über scheinbar ‚natürliche‘ Mütterlichkeit, mit der innerhalb des kulturell verankerten binären Systems gleichzeitig die ‚Unnatürlichkeit‘ männlicher Fürsorge impliziert ist, ebenso zu verstehen wie als Infragestellung eines traditionellen Familienbilds, in dem Väter von der Zuständigkeit für das emotionale Kindeswohl eher ausgeschlossen sind, weil diese als genuin weibliche Aufgabe diskursiviert wird. ; Abstract ; This article demonstrates from a historical perspective and in terms of cultural studies research into emotions, which examines affects and feelings in terms of their forms of cultural representation and cultural conditions, how the narrative of motherly care has shaped the cultural understanding of women up to the present day. An analysis of one cinematic ( Stephen Daldry’s “The Hours”) and one literary (Julia Franck’s “Die Mittagsfrau”) example puts the focus on two works which both adopt a double perspective, that of the mother as well as of the child. They belong to the group of texts which deal with a tabooed field in the femininity discourse, that is the perspective of those mothers who do not selflessly love their children. They are to be understood as critical reflections of biologistic presuppositions about apparently “natural” motherliness, which at the same time, within the culturally anchored binary system, implies the “unnaturalness” of masculine care. Moreover, they must be understood as calling into question the traditional family image in which fathers tend to be excluded from responsibility for a child’s emotional well-being because that is narrated as a genuinely female task.

    ger: Die Forschungsarbeit nimmt sich der Frage an, warum die Malerei weiblich ist. Im Mittelpunkt stehen kunstliterarische Quellen, Bilder und Zeichnungen, die sich von der Renaissance ausgehend mit der weiblichen Identität der Malerei beschäftigen. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt auf den italienischen Überlieferungen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts, welche die weibliche Rolle der Malerei thematisieren und reflektieren. Die Untersuchung zeigt anhand der Quellenanalyse über die Malereischriften auf, dass die Malerei weiblich ist, und frägt nach den Gründen dieser weiblichen Rollenbilder der Malerei. Über die weiblichen Rollen der Malerei gewinnt man einen Einblick in den Prozess des Bildermachens, eines Werk- und Formschaffens, der Klarheit in der Frage liefert, weshalb die Malerei weiblich ist. Die Wirkmacht von weiblichen Allegorien, Personifikationen und Metaphern und das mimetische Verhältnis der Malerei zur Natur erläutern, weshalb es für die italienischen Kunsttheoretiker von Vorteil ist, eine weiblich gesehene Malerei zu etablieren. Diese weiblichen Rollenbilder der Malerei beleuchten Aspekte eines kreativen Arbeits-, Form- und Werkprozess der Malerei, der ohne das weibliche Rollenbild der Malerei nicht wirksam wäre. Die italienische Kunstliteratur und die Bilder geben einerseits ein literarisches, andererseits ein bildliches Zeugnis ab, dass die „Gestalt gebende Malerei“ weiblich ist. eng: The research addresses the question of why painting is feminine. The focal point is on art literature, pictures and drawings, from the Renaissance onwards, that deal with the female identity of painting. The focus of the work is on Italian treatises on painting from the 16th to 17th centuries. Based on the analysis of these sources, the dissertation shows that painting is feminine and investigates the reasons for these female representations of painting. Through the female representations of painting, one gains an insight into the process of picture making, a work and form creation that provides clarity as to why painting is feminine. The power of female allegories, personifications and metaphors and the mimetic relationship between painting and nature explain why it is advantageous for Italian art theorists to conceptualize painting seen as feminine. These female representations shed light on the aspects of creative work, form and work process in painting that would not be effective without the female role in painting. The Italian art literature and the pictures give both a literary and visual testimony that painting is feminine.

    Abstract ; Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Interpretation vier ausgewählter Filme des Filmemachers Ang Lee – Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, Brokeback Mountain und Hulk, die in den Jahren 1992 bis 2005 entstanden. Sie erforscht die unterschiedliche Inszenierung von Konzepten der Männlichkeit im chinesischen und US-amerikanischen Kontext, sowie den Männlichkeitsdiskurs in Räumen des kulturellen Üergangs. Die Untersuchung Lees männlicher Figuren und Männlichkeitskonzepte macht sich sowohl die chinesische als auch die westliche erkenntnistheoretische Perspektive zu eigen, dabei ist Untersuchung sowohl konzeptionell als auch analytisch angelegt. Auf der konzeptionellen Ebene soll sie zeigen, wie sich die Konstruktion von Männlichkeitskonzepten unter der Einbeziehung nicht nur der westlichen konzeptionellen Argumentation von transkulturellen Räumen (Transdifferenz), sondern auch von andersartigen erkenntnistheoretischen Perspektiven, hier der chinesischen, besser erklären lässt. Auf der analytischen Ebene werden in der Untersuchung der Inszenierung männlicher Figuren audio-visuelle Textanalysen benutzt. Die Analyse hat deutlich die Komplexität und Vielfältigkeit der Aushandlung von Männlichkeitskonzepten in transkulturellen Räumen gezeigt, wobei die Rekonstruktion und die Neuverhandlung von Männlichkeit sowohl emanzipatorisch als auch repressiv von statten gehen kann. Männliche Protagonisten bei Lee finden drei unterschiedliche Wege, ihre männliche Identität zu konstruieren. Als erste Lösung unterdrücken sie den transdifferenten Aspekt und wählen die klare Zugehörigkeit zu einer der Kulturen, die dann als Ursprung für die Restauration der Männlichkeit dient. Die zweite Lösung ist das Annehmen der Transdifferenz um eine mehrdeutige maskuline Identität im transkulturellen Raum aufzubauen. Als letzte Lösung gelingt es einen männlichen Figuren, kulturelle Grenzen zu überschreiten und eine transkulturelle Männlichkeit zu manifestieren. ; Abstract ; This dissertation consists of readings of four selected films by Ang Lee — Pushing Hands, The Wedding Banquet, Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, ranging over a decade from 1992 to 2005. It explores Lee’s representation of diverse Chinese and American masculinities, discussing negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces. My exploration of Lee’s representation of men and masculinities is equipped with double epistemological perspectives, namely, both Chinese and Western. My project is both conceptual and analytical. On the conceptual level, I intend to demonstrate how constructions of masculinities can be more productively explained by employing not only the Western conceptual arguments of transcultural space (transdifference) but also by reading this space from different epistemological perspectives, namely the Western and Chinese. On the analytical level, I employ audio and visual textual analysis in my examination of Lee’s portrayal of male figures. My analysis has clearly demonstrated the complexity and multiplicity in negotiations of masculinities in transcultural spaces, which can be both emancipatory and repressive in re-constructing and re-negotiating one’s masculinity. Male subjectivities in Lee’s films turn to three different ways to construct or reconstruct their manliness. First, men suppress trandifference and opt for a clear belonging to a certain culture, in particular, the culture of origin for masculinity restoration. Second, men embrace transidifference to construct an ambiguous masculine identity in transcultural spaces. Third, men might transcend cultural boundaries to demonstrate transcultural manhood.

    In a short chapter of the Critique of Practical Reason entitled "On the Typic of the Pure Practical Power of Judgment," Kant addresses a crucial problem facing his theory of moral judgment: How can we represent the supersensible moral law so as to apply it to actions in the sensible world? Despite its importance to Kant's project, previous studies of the Typic have been fragmentary, disparate, and contradictory. This book provides a detailed commentary on the Typic, elucidating how it enables moral judgment by means of the law of nature, which serves as the 'type', or analogue, of the moral law. In addition, the book situates the Typic, both historically and conceptually, within Kant's theory of symbolic representation. While many commentators have assimilated the Typic to the aesthetic notion of 'symbolic hypotyposis' in the third Critique, the author contends that it has greater continuities with the theoretical notion of 'symbolic anthropomorphism' in the Prolegomena. As the first comprehensive, book-length study of the Typic that critically engages with the secondary literature, this monograph fills an important gap in the research on Kant's ethics and aesthetics and provides a starting point for further inquiry and debate
