    Entsagung und Routines arbeitet an einer Verfahrensgeschichte deutscher Erzählliteratur am Übergang vom Realismus zur literarischen Moderne. Der Band verfolgt dabei ein doppeltes Ziel: Zum einen bündelt er die semiotische Forschung zum Poetischen Realismus in einem fasslichen Strukturmodell, das als Beschreibungsgrundlage realistischer Erzählverfahren dienen kann. Studien zu Raabe, Fontane, Stifter, Storm und Meyer, aber auch zu Realisten der zweiten und dritten Reihe, überprüfen die Tauglichkeit dieses Ansatzes in der Praxis, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den aporetischen Strukturen des Spätrealismus und Übergangsphänomenen zur Moderne liegt. Zum anderen wird der Versuch unternommen, die Einheit der verschiedenen Ismen um 1900 im Verfahren der ‚Routine‛ zu erkennen. Fallstudien zu wenig behandelten Erzählautoren wie Bang, Conradi, Bölsche, Liliencron, Scheerbart und Dehmel bereiten ein Feld literarischer Prosa auf, das geradezu als Labor der Moderne bezeichnet werden kann. Ein Epilog verfolgt die realistische Erzähltradition bis in die Gegenwart weiter. „Zwei zentrale Thesen sind es, die dem Band zugrundeliegen. Die erste These lautet, dass der Poetische Realismus immer wieder auf Figurationen der Entsagung zurückgreift, weil er aufgrund einer ihm eigenen strukturellen Aporie ein fundamentales Problem mit seinen Erzählschlüssen hat. Diese Aporie basiert auf der merkwürdigen, in vielen Programmschriften des 19. Jahrhunderts nachzulesenden Verquickung von Idealismus und Realismus. Sie besteht darin, dass realistische Erzähltexte semiotisch Unvereinbares zu leisten versuchen: Auf der einen Seite (der syntagmatisch-metonymischen Achse) wollen sie realistische Details plausibel verknüpfen; auf der anderen Seite (der paradigmatisch-metaphorischen Achse) wollen sie diese Arbeit am Detailrealismus und am lebensweltlich plausiblen Plotting mit einem übergeordneten Metacode verbinden, der für den Sinn des Ganzen und die nötige poetische „Verklärung“ sorgen soll... Baßlers zweite These bezieht sich auf die beginnende Moderne um 1900 und den Übergang zwischen Realismus und Moderne. Den „point of departure“ vom Poetischen Realismus sieht Baßler in dem, was er mit Bezug auf William S. Burroughs’ Roman „Queer“ als „Routine“ bezeichnet. Eine Routine ist ein idiosynkratischer Diskurs, der nach bestimmten, selbst gesetzten Spielregeln funktioniert. Mit dem Realismus verbindet ihn auf den ersten Blick die Figur des Sonderlings, deren Psychologie er zu folgen scheint. Im Unterschied aber zum Realismus ist dieser Diskurs mit seinen personal erzählten Idiosynkrasien komplett partikular und erlaubt die radikale Öffnung für Rand- und Grenzgänger“ (literaturkritik.de)

    Entsagung und Routines arbeitet an einer Verfahrensgeschichte deutscher Erzählliteratur am Übergang vom Realismus zur literarischen Moderne. Der Band verfolgt dabei ein doppeltes Ziel: Zum einen bündelt er die semiotische Forschung zum Poetischen Realismus in einem fasslichen Strukturmodell, das als Beschreibungsgrundlage realistischer Erzählverfahren dienen kann. Studien zu Raabe, Fontane, Stifter, Storm und Meyer, aber auch zu Realisten der zweiten und dritten Reihe, überprüfen die Tauglichkeit dieses Ansatzes in der Praxis, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf den aporetischen Strukturen des Spätrealismus und Übergangsphänomenen zur Moderne liegt. Zum anderen wird der Versuch unternommen, die Einheit der verschiedenen Ismen um 1900 im Verfahren der ‚Routine‛ zu erkennen. Fallstudien zu wenig behandelten Erzählautoren wie Bang, Conradi, Bölsche, Liliencron, Scheerbart und Dehmel bereiten ein Feld literarischer Prosa auf, das geradezu als Labor der Moderne bezeichnet werden kann. Ein Epilog verfolgt die realistische Erzähltradition bis in die Gegenwart weiter. „Zwei zentrale Thesen sind es, die dem Band zugrundeliegen. Die erste These lautet, dass der Poetische Realismus immer wieder auf Figurationen der Entsagung zurückgreift, weil er aufgrund einer ihm eigenen strukturellen Aporie ein fundamentales Problem mit seinen Erzählschlüssen hat. Diese Aporie basiert auf der merkwürdigen, in vielen Programmschriften des 19. Jahrhunderts nachzulesenden Verquickung von Idealismus und Realismus. Sie besteht darin, dass realistische Erzähltexte semiotisch Unvereinbares zu leisten versuchen: Auf der einen Seite (der syntagmatisch-metonymischen Achse) wollen sie realistische Details plausibel verknüpfen; auf der anderen Seite (der paradigmatisch-metaphorischen Achse) wollen sie diese Arbeit am Detailrealismus und am lebensweltlich plausiblen Plotting mit einem übergeordneten Metacode verbinden, der für den Sinn des Ganzen und die nötige poetische „Verklärung“ sorgen soll... Baßlers zweite These bezieht sich auf die beginnende Moderne um 1900 und den Übergang zwischen Realismus und Moderne. Den „point of departure“ vom Poetischen Realismus sieht Baßler in dem, was er mit Bezug auf William S. Burroughs’ Roman „Queer“ als „Routine“ bezeichnet. Eine Routine ist ein idiosynkratischer Diskurs, der nach bestimmten, selbst gesetzten Spielregeln funktioniert. Mit dem Realismus verbindet ihn auf den ersten Blick die Figur des Sonderlings, deren Psychologie er zu folgen scheint. Im Unterschied aber zum Realismus ist dieser Diskurs mit seinen personal erzählten Idiosynkrasien komplett partikular und erlaubt die radikale Öffnung für Rand- und Grenzgänger“ (literaturkritik.de)
