    Introduction to the Travel in Victorian Periodicals Database (TVPD) This database (TVPD) was compiled in the context of a research project on the representation of travel in Victorian periodicals conducted by Barbara Korte at the University of Freiburg. The results of the project will be published in a monograph: Travel in Victorian Periodicals, 1850-1900: Media Logic and Cultural Work. Over the course of four years, entries for the database were written and edited by Sophie Bantle, Sofia Guimarães, Janna Kaiser, Klara Machata, Özlem Sarica, Lara Trunz and Mona Zeuner (in alphabetical order). Victorian travel writing has been extensively studied for books, but the representation of travel in periodicals – in the form of travelogues, topographical descriptions and travel advice, in lengthy articles as well as short notes – has received little attention. It can be claimed, though, that periodicals had a greater impact on the Victorian culture of travel than books because they were a medium of daily life, addressed different sections of society, and engaged with travel in media-specific forms. With their own media logic, Victorian periodicals played a major role in accommodating their readers to the discourses and practices of contemporary travel. The database focuses on four widely read periodicals: o The Leisure Hour (1852–1905) was a long-lived and influential family magazine with a great number of travel-related articles. During its first two decades, the Leisure Hour’s address encompassed readers of the middle as well as the working classes. o Good Words (1860–1910) was a family magazine addressed to middle-class readers. Like the Leisure Hour it cultivated a Protestant tone. o The Englishwoman’s Domestic Magazine (1852–1882) was addressed to middle-class female readers and situated travel in the middle-class female lifeworld, also reflecting the cultural constraints to which women’s travel was exposed. o The Boy’s Own Paper (1879–1967) was targeted at young male readers. Instead of focussing on best-selling travel texts by Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Michael Palin, Alain de Botton and others, this book examines a strand of innovative contemporary travel writing wherein the authors experiment with form, content and the politics of representation. In this, innovative travel texts by a range of writers – from Michael Ondaatje and Caryl Phillips to Daphne Marlatt and Sam Miller – transform the genre by inscribing travel, migration, mobility and displacement within a variety of experimental textual strategies to work through questions of movement and the politics of personal identity in relation to the complex interlocutions of space, place and subjectivity. As a result, Mobility at Large challenges those critics who dismiss the genre as inherently conservative and inextricably bound up in a colonial, Eurocentric tradition. The book also documents a long and rich tradition of travel writing that existed well beyond the influence of Europe

    Die Zeit um 1900 markiert die Schwelle vom ‚Nicht-Wissen‘ zum ‚Wissen‘ über Korea: In diesem Zeitraum erschien der erste deutschsprachige Bericht einer Korea-Reise. Die textuellen und bildlichen Darstellungsstrategien des ‚Wissens über Korea‘ werden in dieser Studie anhand von vier ausgewählten Reiseberichten analysiert, die zwischen 1880 und 1915 erschienen. Das bislang kaum erschlossene Material wird vor dem Hintergrund des komplexen Verhältnisses zwischen Reiseliteratur sowie Wissensgenerierung und -vermittlung untersucht. Die Perspektive der südkoreanischen Germanistin auf die Schriften der ‚Anderen‘ über das ‚Eigene‘ offenbart einen innovativen Blick auf die damit verbundenen Praktiken und Machtstrukturen. The period around 1900 marks the threshold from “not knowing” to “knowing” about Korea. During this time the first German-language travelogue appeared. The study is based on four selected travelogues written between 1880 and 1915 and analyzes the representational strategies of the text and pictures on their “knowledge of Korea”. The material has hardly been explored to date. It is examined against the background of the complex relationship between travel literature and the generation and transfer of knowledge about the “other culture”, as well as the cultural practices and power structures associated with it. The perspective of the South Korean Germanist on the writings of “the others”, the German-speaking Europeans, about her “own” heritage, the Korean Culture, is extraordinarily revealing.

    ger: Die Geheimnisse des Orients waren für die Europäer/innen schon immer ein Mysterium. Im Laufe der Jahre wurden immer mehr Fantasien und Mythen entwickelt, die in zahlreichen Bildern, Büchern und Geschichten ihren Ausdruck fanden. Viele Europäer/innen reisten schließlich in die Fremde, um dort die erhofften Schönheiten und Mysterien mit eigenen Augen zu sehen. Jedoch wurde nichts im Bezug auf den Orient so viel diskutiert wie die Frauen und der Harem. Er war ein Auslöser für männliche erotische Fantasien. Die westliche Gesellschaft verband damit die männliche Dominanz über die Frauen und sah ihn als Ort sexueller Freizügigkeit. Außerdem interessierte man sich für diese Form des Zusammenlebens an sich. Um ihre Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse mit ihrer Familie und anderen Menschen aus ihrer Kultur zu teilen, dokumentierten viele der Reisenden ihre Eindrücke in Form eines Reiseberichts. Eine davon war Ida Hahn-Hahn. Sie schrieb Briefe an ihre Verwandten und Bekannten, sammelte und veröffentlichte sie schließlich 1844 unter dem Titel "Orientalische Briefe". Ida Hahn-Hahn interessierte sich für die fremde Kultur und die Menschen. Sie schrieb viel über die Frauen und von den Beobachtungen, die sie im Bezug auf deren Aussehen und das alltägliche Leben machte. Sie reiste mit gewissen Erwartungen und Vorstellungen in den Orient und entwarf anhand ihrer eigenen Maßstäben und Wertvorstellungen ein ganz persönliches Bild der osmanischen Frau. Die Meinung, die Ida Hahn-Hahn von sich selber hatte, prägte ihre Ansichten über die Orientalin. Sie sah sich als starke, unabhängige und freie Frau und verurteilte die Untätigkeit, Faulheit und Unfreiheit, die sie dort vorfand. Sie konnte sich nicht vorstellen, warum Bildung und Freiheit den Haremsdamen nichts bedeutete und entwarf schlussendlich ein durchwegs negatives Bild der osmanischen Frau. eng: For the Europeans the secrets of the Orient were mysterious and the reason for many speculations. In the course of years the fantasies and myths increased. These were later put down in numerous pictures, books and stories. Therefore, many people travelled in foreign countries to see the beauty and myths on their own. Another interesting thing for the Europeans was the Harem. There were many speculations because of it. This way of living together was one of the most discussed things relating to the Orient. The Harem was also a reason for male-erotic fantasies. The society of the west connected it with the male power about women and saw it as a sexual free place. Furthermore, was this way of living with each other very special. To share experiences with their family and other people of their culture many travellers wrote them down in form of reports. One of these travellers was Ida Hahn-Hahn. She wrote letters to her relations and acquaintances. These letters were collected and published by her in 1844. Ida Hahn-Hahn was very interested in different cultures and people. She often wrote about the women and her experiences which she had made with them. She also travelled with a measure of expectations and imaginations to the Orient and created her own perception of an Ottoman woman. Ida Hahn-Hahn?s self-perception characterized the image, which she had of the Orientals. She saw herself as an independent, strong and free woman. Therefore, she judged inactivity, laziness and bondage. She could not understand why education and freedom have not had a meaning to the Orientals. In fact of this she created a negative perception of them. Not only their look, but also their way of living was characterized by this imagination.
