The 2007 manifesto in favour of a 'Littérature-monde en francÌʹais' has generated new debates in both 'francophone' and 'postcolonial' studies. Praised by some for breaking down the hierarchical division between 'French' and 'Francophone' literatures, the manifesto has been criticized by others for recreating that division through an exoticizing vision that continues to privilege the publishing industry of the former colonial métropole. Does the manifesto signal the advent of a new critical paradigm destined to render obsolescent those of 'francophone' and/or 'postcolonial' studies? Or is it simply a passing fad, a glitzy but ephemeral publicity stunt generated and promoted by writers and publishing executives vis-aÌ€-vis whom scholars and critics should maintain a skeptical distance? Does it offer an all-embracing transnational vista leading beyond the confines of postcolonialism or reintroduce an incipient form of neocolonialism even while proclaiming the end of the centre/periphery divide? In addressing these questions, leading scholars of 'French', 'Francophone' and 'postcolonial' studies from around the globe help to assess the wider question of the evolving status of French Studies as a transnational field of study amid the challenges of globalization

"Reframing Postcolonial Studies addresses the urgent issues that Black Lives Matter has raised with respect to everyday material practices and the frameworks in which our knowledge and cultural heritage are conceptualized and stored. The book points urgently to the many ways in which our society must reinvent itself to enable equitable justice for all." -- Robert J.C. Young, Julius Professor of English and Comparative Literature, New York University, USA "Drawing on urban theory, art history, literary analysis, environmental humanities and linguistics, this book is ambitious and wide-ranging, asking us what it is to live creatively and critically with the residues of colonial appropriation and sedimentation while in open dialogue with the subjects who still live in its wake." -- Tamar Garb, Durning Lawrence Professor in History of Art, University College London, UK This book constitutes a collective action to examine what foundational concepts, interdisciplinary methodologies, and activist concerns are pivotal for the future of common humanity, as we bear the weight of our postcolonial inheritance in the twenty-first century. Written by scholars of different generations, the chapters interrogate how current intellectual endeavors are in contact with individual and community-based actions outside of the academy. Going beyond the perennial debates on the tension between theory and praxis or on the disparity between activism and scholarship, they examine literary texts, visual artworks, language and immigration policies, public monuments, museum exhibitions, moral dilemmas, and political movements to deepen our contemporary postcolonial action on the edge of conceptual thinking, methodological experimentation, and scholarly activism. Reframing Postcolonial Studies is the first volume whose rationale is formulated in explicitly intergenerational, future-oriented terms.

London was once the hub of an empire on which 'the sun never set.' After the second world war, as Britain withdrew from most of its colonies, the city that once possessed the world began to contain a diasporic world that was increasingly taking possession of it. Drawing on postcolonial theories ? as well as interdisciplinary perspectives from cultural geography, urban theory, history, and sociology ? Imagining London examines representations of the English metropolis in Canadian, West Indian, South Asian, and second-generation 'black British' novels written in the last half of the twentieth century. It analyzes the diverse ways in which London is experienced and portrayed as a transnational space by Commonwealth expatriates and migrants. As the former 'heart of empire' and a contemporary 'world city,' London metonymically represents the British Empire in two distinct ways. In the early years of decolonization, it is a primarily white city that symbolizes imperial power and history. Over time, as migrants from former colonies have 'reinvaded the centre' and changed its demographic and cultural constitution, it has come to represent empire geographically and spatially as a global microcosm. John Clement Ball examines the work of more than twenty writers, including established authors such as Robertson Davies, Mordecai Richler, Jean Rhys, Sam Selvon, V.S. Naipaul, Anita Desai, and Salman Rushdie, and newer voices such as Catherine Bush, David Dabydeen, Amitav Ghosh, Hanif Kureishi, and Zadie Smith

Is it possible to simultaneously belong to and be exiled from a community? In Politics of the Female Body, Ketu H. Katrak argues that it is not only possible, but common, especially for women who have been subjects of colonial empires. Through her careful analysis of postcolonial literary texts, Katrak uncovers the ways that the female body becomes a site of both oppression and resistance. She examines writers working in the English language, including Anita Desai from India, Ama Ata Aidoo from Ghana, and Merle Hodge from Trinidad, among others. The writers share colonial histories, a sense of solidarity, and resistance strategies in the on-going struggles of decolonization that center on the body. Bringing together a rich selection of primary texts, Katrak examines published novels, poems, stories, and essays, as well as activist materials, oral histories, and pamphlets—forms that push against the boundaries of what is considered strictly literary. In these varied materials, she reveals common political and feminist alliances across geographic boundaries. A unique comparative look at women’s literary work and its relationship to the body in third world societies, this text will be of interest to literary scholars and to those working in the fields of postcolonial studies and women’s studies
