Lam -- NOTES ON CONTRIBUTORS -- INDEX. The essays in this volume deal with the complexities of race in the Asia-Pacific context. Social tensions concerning race and ethnicity continue to pose profound challenges to Asia-Pacific countries in various stages of development and modernisation. Issues such as social justice, identity-formation, marginalisation and alienation, gender and related issues, are inevitably implicated in the racial cultures of Asia, and where Asian diasporic communities develop. The essays in this volume explore the ways in which race-culture is reflected in literature and cultural texts (drama and performance, visual arts, film and television). Included in this volume are essays on Amitav Ghosh, Vivan Sundaram, Li-Young Lee, R. K. Narayan, Ayu Utami, Dewi Lestari, Rex Shelley, Xu Xi, Pico Iyer and others

This book explores whether the post-9/11 novels of Rushdie, Hamid, Aslam and Shamsie can be read as part of an attempt to revise modern ‘knowledge’ of the Islamic world, using globally-distributed English-language literature to reframe Muslims’ potential to connect with others. Focussing on novels including Shalimar the Clown, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Wasted Vigil, and Burnt Shadows, the author combines aesthetic, historical, political and spiritual considerations with analyses of the popular discourses and critical discussions surrounding the novels; and scrutinises how the writers have been appropriated as authentic spokespeople by dominant political and cultural forces. Finally, she explores how, as writers of Indian and Pakistani origin, Rushdie, Hamid, Aslam and Shamsie negotiate their identities, and the tensions of being seen to act as Muslim representatives, in relation to the complex international and geopolitical context in which they write This book explores whether the post-9/11 novels of Rushdie, Hamid, Aslam and Shamsie can be read as part of an attempt to revise modern 'knowledge' of the Islamic world, using globally-distributed English-language literature to reframe Muslims' potential to connect with others. This collection offers an essential, structured survey of contemporary fictions of South Asia in English, and includes specially commissioned chapters on each of the national traditions of the region. It covers less well known writings from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as well as the more firmly established canon of contemporary Indian literature, and features chapters on important new and emergent forms such as the graphic novel, genre fiction and the short story. It also contextualizes some key ‘transformative’ aspects of recent fiction such as border and diaspora identities; new middle-class narratives and popular genres; and literary response to terror and conflict. Edited and designed with researchers and students in mind, the book updates existing criticism and represents a readable guide to a dynamic, rapidly changing area of global literature Acknowledgments -- Notes on Contributors -- Introduction; Alex Tickell -- PART I: REGIONAL FORMATIONS -- 1. This book is the first comparative analysis of a new generation of diasporic Anglophone South Asian women novelists including Kiran Desai, Tahmima Anam, Monica Ali, Kamila Shamsie and Jhumpa Lahiri from a feminist perspective. It charts the significant changes these writers have produced in postcolonial and contemporary women’s fiction since the late 1990s. Paying careful attention to the authors’ distinct subcontinental backgrounds of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka - as well as India - this study destabilises the central place given to fiction focused on India. It broadens the customary focus on diasporic writers’ metropolitan contexts, illuminates how these transnational, female-authored literary texts challenge national assumptions and considers the ways in which this new configuration of transnational, feminist writers produces a postcolonial feminist discourse, which differs from Anglo-American feminism Acknowledgements -- Introduction -- 1. Globalisation, labour, narrative and representation in Arundhati Roy, Monica Ali and Kiran Desai -- 2. War, violence and memory: gendered national imaginaries in Tahmima Anam, Sorayya Khan and contemporary Sri Lankan women writers -- 3. Resistance and religion: gender, Islam and agency in Kamila Shamsie, Tahmima Anam, Monica Ali and Ameena Hussein -- 4. Migration, gender and globalisation in Jhumpa Lahiri -- 5. This book examines how ideas about place and space have been transformed in recent decades. It offers a unique understanding of the ways in which postcolonial writers have contested views of place as fixed and unchanging and are remapping conceptions of world geography, with chapters on cartography, botany and gardens, spice, ecologies, animals and zoos, and cities, as well as reference to the importance of archaeology and travel in such debates. Writers whose work receives detailed attention include Amitav Ghosh, Derek Walcott, Jamaica Kincaid, Salman Rushdie, Michael Ondaatje and Robert Kroetsch. Challenging both older colonial and more recent global constructions of place, the book argues for an environmental politics that is attentive to the concerns of disadvantaged peoples, animal rights and ecological issues. Its range and insights make it essential reading for anyone interested in the changing physical and human geography of the contemporary world Acknowledgements -- 1. Weaving together careful readings of plays and reviews, memoirs and interviews, biographies and critical essays, Acting Like a Woman in Modern Japan traces the emergence of the first generation of modern actresses in Japan, a nation in which male actors had long dominated the public stage. What emerges is a colorful and complex picture of modern Japanese gender, theater, and nationhood. Using the lives and careers of two dominant actresses from the Meiji era, Kano reveals the fantasies, fears, and impact that women on stage created in Japan as it entered the twentieth century

Drawing on Buddhist thought and offering, in part, a response to Edward Said's classic work in the same field, Translating Orients re-interprets Orientalism and shows the vital presence of the Orient in twentieth century and contemporary world literatures. Defining Orients as neither subjects nor objects but realities that emerge through translational acts, Timothy Weiss argues that all interpretation can be viewed as translations that contain utopian as well as ideological aspects. The translational approach to literary and cultural interpretations adds depth to Weiss's analysis of works by Jorge Luis Borges, Paul Bowles, V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, and Kazua Ishiguro, among others.Weiss examines texts that reference Asian, North African, or Middle Eastern societies and their imaginaries, and, equally important, engage questions of individual and communal identity that issue from transformative encounters. Interpretation is thus viewed as an act that orients, mapping the world not in the sense of delineating a pre-given form, location, or order, but rather as a charting of its emergence and possibilities. In addressing the principal challenges of contemporary critical thinking, fundamentalism, and groundlessness, Weiss puts forward new concepts of identity and citizenship in the reinterpretation of Orientalism.

This edited book focuses on the role of different types of pedagogical solutions in the acquisition of the Japanese grammatical system by reviewing, assessing and measuring current theory and research. Findings from this research have implications for the way Japanese grammar is learned and taught in a classroom context. The editors and contributors address a number of questions around the role of Japanese grammar learning and teaching such as: what is the role of instruction in Japanese second language acquisition? What are the main findings of empirical research into the acquisition of Japanese grammar? Is any one particular pedagogical intervention or solution to the teaching of Japanese grammar more effective than another? What pedagogical options do we have for the teaching of Japanese grammar? This book offers a unique insight into its practical implications for Japanese language learning and teaching for applied linguists, researchers, language teaching professionals and curriculum developers alike. Alessandro G. Benati is Professor of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies at the University of Greenwich, UK, and Director of the Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education (CAROLE). He holds a PhD in second language acquisition from the University of Greenwich and is internationally known for his research in second language learning and teaching, with special emphasis on processing instruction. This book critically examines the postcolonial canon, questioning both the disproportionate attention to texts written in English and their overuse in attempts to understand the postcolonial condition. The author addresses the non-representation of Indian literature in theory, and the inadequacy of generalizing postcolonial experiences and subjectivities based on literature produced in one language (English). It argues that, while postcolonial scholarship has successfully challenged Eurocentrism, it is now time to extend the dimensions beyond Anglophone and Francophone literatures to include literatures in other languages such as Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Tagalog, and Swahili 1. Introduction: The Rationale for Remapping the Postcolonial Canon: Why Remap -- 2. Representing the Postcolonial Subaltern: A Comparative Reading of Three Subaltern Narratives by O.V. Vijayan, Arundhati Roy, and Mahashweta Devi -- 3. The Hullabaloo about Hybridity: Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, Girish Karnad’s Yayati and Heaps of Broken Images, and Lalithambika Antherjanam’s Cast Me Out If You Will -- 4. Re-Imagining Postcolonial Translation Theory -- 5. Beyond the Indian Postcolonial -- Conclusion -- Appendix 1: Wang-Chu by Bhisham Sahni, Translated by Nirmala Menon -- Appendix 2: Wang-Chu by Bhisham Sahni in Original Hindi -- Bibliography -- Index.-

This collection explores the interpretation of historical fiction through fictional representations of the past in an Asian context. Emphasising the significance of region and locality, it explores local networks of political and cultural exchanges at the heart of an Asian polity. The book considers how imagined pasts converge and diverge in developed and developing nations, and examines the limitations of representation at a time when theories of world literature are shaping the way we interpret global histories and cultures. The collection calls attention to the importance of acknowledging local tensions-both within the historical and cultural make-up of a country, and within the Asian continent-in the interpretation of historical fiction. It emphasizes a broad-spectrum view that privileges the shared historical experiences of a group of countries in close proximity, and it also responds to the paradigm shift in Asian Studies. Discussing how local conditions shape and create expectations of how we read historical fiction and working with the theme of fictionality and locality, the volume provides an alternative framework for the study of world literature Introduction -- Can One Speak of the September 30th Movement? The Power of Silence in Indonesian Literature -- Cultural Encounters and Imagining Multi-cultural Identities in Two Taiwanese Historical Novels -- Fate or State: The Double Life of a Composite Chinese Spy in A Map of Betrayal -- Contesting Chineseness in Vyvyane Loh’s Breaking the Tongue -- Female Body as the Site of Historical Controversy: Ghostly Reappearance in South Korean Historical Fiction -- Cosmopolitan Retellings and the Idea of the Local: The Case of Salman Rushdie’s Shame -- Connections, Contact, and Community in the Southeast Asian Past: Teaching Transnational History through Amitav Ghosh’s The Glass Palace -- “Until it lives in our hands and in our eyes, and it’s ours”: Rewriting Historical Fiction and The Hungry Tide -- Coda

This book is the first book-length study to explore the sartorial politics of identity in the literature of the South Asian diaspora in Britain. Using fashion and dress as the main focus of analysis, and linking them with a myriad of identity concerns, the book takes the reader on a journey from the eighteenth century to the new millennium, from early travel account by South Asian writers to contemporary British-Asian fictions. Besides sartorial readings of other key authors and texts, the book provides an in-depth exploration of Kamala Markandaya’s The Nowhere Man (1972), Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia (1990), Meera Syal’s Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee (1999) and Monica Ali’s Brick Lane (2003).This work examines what an analysis of dress contributes to the interpretation of the featured texts, their contexts and identity politics, but it also considers what literature has added to past and present discussions on the South Asian dressed body in Britain. Endowed with an interdisciplinary emphasis, the book is of interest to students and academics in a variety of fields, including literary criticism, socio-cultural studies and fashion theory.  1. Introduction -- 2. 'Our Eastern costume created a sensation' -- 3. The 'Sartorially Undesirable "Other"' -- 4. 'It was stylish and "in" to be eastern'? -- 5. 'Chanel designing catwalk Indian suits' -- 6. 'She had her hijab pulled off' -- 7. A Sartorial Afterword

This book considers indigenous-language translations of Romantic texts in the British colonies. It argues that these translations uncover a latent discourse around colonisation in the original English texts. Focusing on poems by William Wordsworth, John Keats, Felicia Hemans, and Robert Burns, and on Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe, it provides the first scholarly insight into the reception of major Romantic authors in indigenous languages, and makes a major contribution to the study of global Romanticism and its colonial heritage. The book demonstrates the ways in which colonial controversies around prayer, song, hospitality, naming, mapping, architecture, and medicine are drawn out by translators to make connections between Romantic literature, its preoccupations, and debates in the nineteenth- and early twentieth-century colonial worlds 1. Introduction -- 2. Praying: Felicia Hemans at Third Sight -- 3. Singing: Global Indigeneity and Robert Burns -- 4. Naming: Aloha Ivanhoe -- 5. Mapping: Wordsworth and Poems on the Renaming of Places -- 6. Building: Relocating Wordsworth's Architecture -- 7. Healing: Isabella, or, The Pot of Tulāsi -- 8. Conclusion: Regenerating Romanticism
