    ger: Da historische Spielfilme eine große Rolle für die Ausbildung des Geschichtsbewusstseins von Menschen spielen, hat es sich auch die Fachdidaktik des Fachs Geschichte vermehrt zur Aufgabe gemacht, den sinnvollen Einsatz von Historienfilmen im Unterricht zu beleuchten. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich damit, wie durch den gezielten Einsatz von Filmszenen aus den österreichischen Filmen Der Bockerer (1981) und Hasenjagd – Vor lauter Feigheit gibt es kein Erbarmen (1994) den SchülerInnen die österreichische Selbstwahrnehmung als Opfer und TäterInnen des Nationalsozialismus vermittelt werden kann. Ab den 1980er Jahren finden sich in der österreichischen Filmelandschaft vermehrt Produktionen, die sich mit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auseinandersetzen. Während Der Bockerer mit seinem Titelhelden noch eine Identifikationsfigur liefert, die aufzeigen soll, dass typische ÖsterreicherInnen nichts mit dem Nationalsozialismus zu tun haben wollten und sich offen dagegen ausgesprochen haben, liefert Hasenjagd – Vor lauter Feigheit gibt es kein Erbarmen bereits eine viel kritischere Auseinandersetzung mit der Rolle der ÖsterreicherInnen im Zuge der NS-Verbrechen und zeigt diese bewusst als TäterInnen. Auf Grund ihrer großen Unterschiede und ihrer Repräsentativität für die österreichische Selbstwahrnehmung zu den Entstehungszeiten der Filme eignen sich diese beiden gut für den Einsatz im Geschichtsunterricht. Das vorgelegte Thema kann durch die Analyse ausgewählter Filmszenen mit den SchülerInnen besonders gut nachhaltig vermittelt oder vertieft werden. Zusätzlich bietet die Beschäftigung mit der Analyse der beiden Filme eine gute Möglichkeit verschiedene historische Kompetenzen, die bei der Matura benötigt werden, zu fördern. So kann unter anderem die historische Methodenkompetenz im Umgang mit Filmen als historische Quellen verbessert werden. eng: Historical movies are of significant importance for establishing historical awareness. For this reason, the use of films has become a relevant aspect of teaching the subject of history. The thesis at hand attempts to present and analyse selected sequences of the Austrian films Der Bockerer (1981) and Hasenjagd – Vor lauter Feigheit gibt es kein Erbarmen (1994) in order to raise the students’ awareness of perceiving Austrians as victims and culprits of National Socialism. From the 1980s on, Austrian films have depicted the Second World War in different ways. Der Bockerer presents a protagonist who is easy to relate to and who represents the idea of Austrians not wanting to have anything to do with National Socialism and that they tried to resist. Hasenjagd - Vor lauter Feigheit gibt es kein Erbarmen, on the other hand, presents a more reflected approach and depicts the Austrians citizens as culprits.The two films present different approaches on how to depict the Austrians’ self-awareness of being victims or culprits at different times in the past. Due to this, these films contain scenes which are ideal for analysing them in school. The thesis at hand presents that by doing so, the aforementioned topic can be taught in an effective way. Furthermore, the teaching approach of using movies provides students with the opportunity of developing historical competences which are relevant for their graduation. To list an example, one can refer to the skill of regarding films as historical sources.

    Daniel Jonah Goldhagen has revisited a question that history has come to treat as settled, and his researchers have led him to the inescapable conclusion that none of the established answers holds true. That question is: "How could the Holocaust happen?" His own response is a new exploration of those who carried out the Holocaust and of German society and its ingrained anti-semitism - and it demands a fundamental revision of our thinking about the years 1933-1945 Drawing principally on materials either unexplored or neglected by previous scholars, Goldhagen marshals new, disquieting, primary evidence - including extensive testimony from the actual perpetrators themselves - to show that many beliefs about the killers are fallacies: They were not primarily SS men or Nazi Party members, but perfectly ordinary Germans from all walks of life, men (and women) who brutalized and murdered Jews both willingly and zealously And they did so, moreover, not because they were coerced (for, as he shows irrefutably, so many were informed by their own commanders that they could refuse to kill without fear of retribution)...not because they slavishly followed orders (a view seemingly supported by Stanley Milgram's famous Yale "obedience experiment")...not because of any tremendous social, psychological, or peer pressure to conform to the behaviour of their comrades (for no such evidence exists)...and not for any reasons associated with Hannah Arendt's disputed notion of the "banality of evil." They acted as they did because of a widespread, profound, unquestioned, and virulent antisemitism that led them to regard the Jews as a demonic enemy whose extermination was not only necessary but also just

    Daniel Jonah Goldhagen has revisited a question that history has come to treat as settled, and his researchers have led him to the inescapable conclusion that none of the established answers holds true. That question is: "How could the Holocaust happen?" His own response is a new exploration of those who carried out the Holocaust and of German society and its ingrained anti-semitism - and it demands a fundamental revision of our thinking about the years 1933-1945 Drawing principally on materials either unexplored or neglected by previous scholars, Goldhagen marshals new, disquieting, primary evidence - including extensive testimony from the actual perpetrators themselves - to show that many beliefs about the killers are fallacies: They were not primarily SS men or Nazi Party members, but perfectly ordinary Germans from all walks of life, men (and women) who brutalized and murdered Jews both willingly and zealously And they did so, moreover, not because they were coerced (for, as he shows irrefutably, so many were informed by their own commanders that they could refuse to kill without fear of retribution)...not because they slavishly followed orders (a view seemingly supported by Stanley Milgram's famous Yale "obedience experiment")...not because of any tremendous social, psychological, or peer pressure to conform to the behaviour of their comrades (for no such evidence exists)...and not for any reasons associated with Hannah Arendt's disputed notion of the "banality of evil." They acted as they did because of a widespread, profound, unquestioned, and virulent antisemitism that led them to regard the Jews as a demonic enemy whose extermination was not only necessary but also just
