    Verlagsinfo: Un libro particolare, un romanzo nutrito di autobiografia, che diventa anche biografia di una generazione. Una narrazione composita, fatta di brani di esistenza, ricordi, che ci portano gradualmente al cuore nero della storia, Auschwitz. "Lezioni di tenebra" racconta il rapporto tra la giovane autrice e la madre, l'unica di due famiglie numerose a essere sopravvissuta all'Olocausto, insieme al padre. Ebrei polacchi, vissuti in Germania, dove la figlia Helena è cresciuta sentendosi completamente estranea al mondo tedesco e alla sua cultura, pur usandone la lingua anche nel suo esordio in poesia. Romanzo sull'eterno tema dell'amore difficile tra madre e figlia, che non è soltanto una memoria sull'Olocausto, ma un resoconto lucido, appassionato e distaccato al tempo stesso, che punta soprattutto a misurare l'intensità del contraccolpo che quella tragedia ha lasciato nella generazione successiva. E il contraccolpo sta nell'impossibilità di avere radici, nella confusione linguistica, nel disperato bisogno di appartenere e nella crudele condanna a sentirsi estranei, comunque e dovunque. Sta nello stupore di fronte al destino, al male, alla sorte: "Paghi per ogni errore, anche il più piccolo, sempre e comunque... Ma che cosa sia un errore non lo sai. A questo non devi mai pensare".

    Die Niederländerin Olga Majeau erzählt in einem aufwendig recherchierten Tatsachenbericht mit romanhaften Passagen die Geschichte ihrer Familie, ausgehend von dem Dichterpaar Bettine und Achim von Arnim, deren Tochter Maxe und Enkelin Armgard, die den ungarischen Diplomaten Béla Eperjesy heiratete, mit ihm Wohnsitze in ganz Europa und Kleinasien teilte und eine bedeutende Kunstsammlung in einem Südtiroler Schloss anlegte. Um das Schicksal des Sohnes Arpad, des Urgrossvaters der Autorin, geht es schwerpunktmäi︢g. Als k.u.k.-Diplomat geriet er in die Mühlen zweier Weltkriege, dann der Verlust des gesamten Besitzes in Südtirol und von Budapest aus die Verbannung in den Gulag durch die Kommunisten. Scheidung, Trennung von den Kindern und ein verarmter Lebensabend in den Niederlanden. Majeau forschte mehrere Jahre in deutschen, österreichischen, italienischen und ungarischen Archiven, um die Protagonisten ihrer europaweit weitverzweigten Familie lebendig werden zu lassen.
