This book explores the use of imaginative literature as persuasion, focusing on the science fiction of Ursula Le Guin and her rhetorical use of myth. The author concludes that Le Guin (like Emerson, Peirce, Thoreau, Whitman, and Dewey) is a romantic/pragmatic rhetorician. In that sense, she is arguing for what Vico argued for in the eighteenth century: that knowledge should be seen and studied as an integrated whole, and that Cartesian thinking is only part of how humans make meaning

Diasporic Marvellous Realism highlights the interesting switch in perspective found in contemporary literary production where the supernatural is regarded from a diasporic perspective as marvellous rather than magical. The titular term is applied to the influence of transterritorialization on the works of first- and second generation immigrant writers when approaching and exploring the myths and legends of their culture of origin. The texts included in this analysis show that the employment of this literary philosophy and narrative technique in contemporary literature involves a fruitful refocusing of the rhetorical gaze regarding the importance of cultural heritage as vindicatory resistance to the lacunae of history and as celebratory re-enfranchisement of diasporic communities in host countries such as Canada and the UK

In L'Elaboration du mythe du soi Solveig Hudhomme highlights how Samuel Beckett’s works build a myth of their own, the myth of a space, a permanent inner space going beyond the textual boundaries. This inner place, \'the self\' as we can call it, is a place liberated from biography, from the « ego » but also a place in which some invariants can be found. This study focuses on the way stories introduce a principle of repetition so that the reader can recognize a place, a narrative, a character. As the story develops, contingency slowly grows into necessity

Main description: Studying Heine's approach to myth and mythology can help to further ongoing discussion of the problem 'myth and modernity'. Heine's concern is with the view of the world describable as 'mythic thinking'. Heinrich Heine (1797-1856) himself was inspired to some extent by the 'new mythology' of early Romanticism and he also took an active part in the revaluation of popular lore identifiable in late-Romantic 'German mythology'. But Heine's brand of mythic thinking is bound up with resistance to any attempt to capitalise on it for political purposes and to this end to restore it as a (Teutonic) blueprint for society as a whole. It is this resistance that determines the form of Heine's treatment of myth and mythology and the changes it underwent. Heine presents no trace of a reconciliation between myth and modernity but both the otherness and the vitality of myth are very much alive in his work

Main description: The volume presents papers on the subject of "Myths in the Middle Ages", and harnesses the theoretical discussions on the concept of myth for German medieval studies. It is divided into three sections, which stand for various methodological approaches: I. Myth and Christianity, II. Myth and Narrative, III. Myth and Presence. The outcome is that the Middle Ages developed (narrative) strategies on different levels for dealing with mythical material

Eric Gould revises some current assumptions in literary myth criticism, especially Jungian notions of the archetype and myth's immanence in literature that have dominated literary studies for so long. Working from structuralist theories of language, myth, and psyche, he defines myth as part of the symbolic order of language which grows out of the duplicity of the sign.Originally published in 1987.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. "That science-fiction future in which technology would make everything very good—or very bad—has not yet arrived. From our vantage point at least, no age appears to have had a deeper faith in the inevitability and imminence of such a total technological transformation than the early twentieth century. Russia was no exception."—from the introductionIn the Soviet Union, it seems, armoring oneself against the world did not suffice—it was best to become metal itself. In his engaging and accessible book, Rolf Hellebust explores the aesthetic and ideological function of the metallization of the revolutionary body as revealed in Soviet literature, art, and politics. His book shows how the significance of this modern myth goes far beyond the immediate issue of the enthusiasm with which the Bolsheviks welcomed such a symbolic transfiguration and that of our own uneasy attraction to the images of metal flesh and machine-men. Hellebust's literary examples range from the famous (Pasternak's Doctor Zhivago) to the forgotten (early Soviet proletarian poets). To these he adds a mix of non-Russian references, from creation myths to comic book superheroes, medieval alchemy to Moby-Dick. He includes readings of posters, sculpture, and political discourse as well as cross-cultural comparisons to revolutionary France, industrial-age America, and Nazi Germany. The result is a fascinating portrait of the ultimate symbols of dehumanizing modernity, as refracted through the prism of utopian humanism
