    This book surveys English love poetry, primarily, though not exclusively, sonnets and sonnet sequences that show the influence of Petrarch, from the early sixteenth century to the publication of Mary Wroth's Pamphilia to Amphilanthus in 1621. It incorporates a range of new scholarship and thinking into narrative history, with a focus on particular poets including Thomas Wyatt, George Gascoigne, Philip Sidney, Fulke Greville, Samuel Daniel, Wroth,Walter Ralegh, and Shakespeare, as well as particularly notable poems such as "They flee from me", "Gascoigne's Woodmanship", and "The Ocean's Love to Cynthia".The self-absorption of Petrarchan lyricism is brought into a more populous environment and is linked to the ambitious and intense world of the English court, within which many of these poets lived and worked. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth, the Petrarchan theme of love for a powerful but distant woman was literalized in the politics of the realm, in ways that the queen herself recognized and exploited. A final chapter offers a new model for the implied narrative of Shakespeare'ssonnets

Sin embargo, numerosas investigaciones constatan la persistencia y la actualidad de la mística y de la metafísica en muchos autores de distintas manifestaciones artísticas. En este libro, se presenta una relectura de la obra lírica de Dámaso Alonso a partir de su recepción de la tradición mística que converge en San Juan de la Cruz, en cuya obra esta se cristalizaría como paradigma estético y metafísico, dando como fruto una asombrosa red de relaciones intertextuales, que se extiende no solo a través de la generación del 27, sino hasta la poesía española más actual.

    Tragisches und Komisches sind, seit von ihnen die Rede ist, im Gegensatz zu einander gesehen worden. Wird Tragisches mit Komischem verbunden, wäre zu erwarten, dass sie einander schwächen. Tragikomische Situationen überraschen damit, dass die gegensätzlichen Qualitäten einander steigern. Unter welchen Bedingungen kann dies eintreten? Andreas Dorschel richtet die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Verhältnis zur Zeit: Komisches ist im Moment zuhause, Tragisches beschreibt einen großen Bogen. In seiner Studie schlägt er vor, Tragikomisches aus der Perspektive einer Poetik zu erfassen, mithilfe der Kategorien ›Ironie‹, ›Intervention‹ und ›Travestie‹. Inwiefern diese Aufschluss geben, erkundet der Autor an Beispielen aus der Antike, der Frühen Neuzeit und der Moderne: Euripides’ »Bakchai« (erstmals aufgeführt 405 v. Chr.), Shakespeares »Tragedy of King Lear« (gedruckt 1623) und Kafkas »Der Process« (verfasst 1914/15). Das Augenmerk, welches diese erste philosophische Monographie zur Frage der Tragikomik auf die Literatur lenkt, schließt nicht aus, dass es auch im Leben manchmal tragikomisch zugeht. Doch dessen Konstellationen zeigen sich tragikomisch wohl erst dann, wenn auf sie in bestimmten Weisen geblickt wird, die ›poetisch‹ zu nennen sind.

    This book draws attention to the pervasive artistic rivalry between Elizabethan poetry and gardens in order to illustrate the benefits of a trans-media approach to the literary culture of the period. In its blending of textual studies with discussions of specific historical patches of earth, The Poem and the Garden demonstrates how the fashions that drove poetic invention were as likely to be influenced by a popular print convention or a particular garden experience as they were by the formal genres of the classical poets. By moving beyond a strictly verbal approach in its analysis of creative imitation, this volume offers new ways of appreciating the kinds of comparative and competitive methods that shaped early modern poetics. Noting shared patterns-both conceptual and material-in these two areas not only helps explain the persistence of botanical metaphors in sixteenth-century books of poetry but also offers a new perspective on the types of contrastive illusions that distinguish the Elizabethan aesthetic.     This book explores how two early modern and two modern Japanese writers - Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saik (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), and Natsume S seki (1867-1916) - experimented with the poetic artifice afforded by the East Asian literati (bunjin) tradition, a repertoire of Chinese and Japanese poetry and painting. Their experiments generated a poetics of irony that transformed the lineaments of lyric expression in literati culture and advanced the emergence of modern prose poetry in Japanese literature. Through rigorous close readings, this study changes our understanding of the relationship between lyric form and the representation of self, sense, and feeling in Japanese poetic writing from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth century. The myth merged the country's legends going back to the Middle Ages with the Enlightenment image of a happy, free nation of alpine shepherds. Its unique combination of conservative, progressive, and radical associations enabled writers before the French Revolution to call for democratic reforms, whereas those coming after could refigure it as a conservative alternative to French liberté. Integrating intellectual history with literary studies, and addressing a wide range of Romantic-period texts and authors, among them Byron, the Shelleys, Hemans, Scott, Coleridge, and, above all, Wordsworth, the book argues that the myth contributed to the liberal idea of the people as a sublime yet sleeping sovereign"--

Examining experimental modes such as the New Sentence, proceduralism, projective verse, sound poetry, and visual poetry, Jessica Lewis Luck argues that experimental poems materialize not so much the content as the activity of the embodied mind, and they can thus function as a powerful scaffolding for extended cognition, both for the writer and the reader. While current critical approaches tend to describe the effects of experimentalism solely in terms of (often paralyzing) emotion and sensation, Luck shifts from the feeling to the thinking that these poems can generate, expanding the potential blast radius of experimental poetic effects into areas of linguistic, sonic, and visual processing and revealing a transformational potency that strictly affective approaches miss. The cognitive research she draws upon suggests that the strangeness of experimental poetry can, in fact, re-shape the activity of the reader's mind, creating new forms of attention, perception, and cognition.     This book is the first extensive research on the role of poetry during the Iranian Revolution (1979) and the Iran-Iraq War (1980-1988). How can poetry, especially peaceful medieval Sufi poems, be applied to exalt violence, to present death as martyrdom, and to process war traumas? Examining poetry by both Islamic revolutionary and established dissident poets, it demonstrates how poetry spurs people to action, even leading them to sacrifice their lives. The book's originality lies in fresh analyses of how themes such as martyrdom and violence, and mystical themes such as love and wine, are integrated in a vehemently political context, while showing how Shiite ritual such as the pilgrimage to Mecca clash with Saudi Wahhabi appreciations.     This book is the cultural history of an idea which now seems so self-evident as barely to be worth stating: through writing imaginative literature, an author can accrue significant and lasting economic and cultural power. We take for granted, now, that authority dwells in literature and in being its author. This state of affairs was not naturally occurring, but deliberately invented. This book tells the story of that invention.The story's central figures are Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson. But its narrative begins in the 1680s, with the last gasp of the bond linking literary to political authority. While Jacobite poets celebrated (and mourned) the Stuart dynasty, Whig writers traced the philosophical and aesthetic consequences of the accession of William of Orange. Both groups left behind sets of literary devices ready-made to confer and validate authority. Claude Willan challenges the continued reign of the "Scriblerian" model of the period and shows how that reign was engineered. In so doing he historicizes the relationship between "good" and "bad" writing, and suggests how we might think about literature and beauty had Pope and Johnson not taken literary authority for themselves.     Lazarus-Figuren tauchen in Frankreich und Spanien nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in literarischen und literaturtheoretischen Texten besonders häufig auf. Offenbar geht vom biblischen Wiedergänger eine besondere Faszination aus, die in historischer Perspektive einzigartig ist. Als Rückkehrer aus dem Totenreich fördert Lazarus traumatische Erfahrungen zutage, die sich einer alltäglichen Versprachlichung entziehen und nur im Medium der Literatur sagbar sind. Lazarus wird zur Metapher für Kriegsheimkehrer, KZ-Überlebende, Gefolterte, Exilanten und andere Wiedergänger des kollektiven Gedächtnisses. Gegen nationalstaatliche Mythenbildungen rücken in literarischen Texten der unmittelbaren Nachkriegsjahre jene Opfer ins Blickfeld, die aus dem öffentlichen Diskurs verdrängt werden. Anhand kulturwissenschaftlicher Theorien zu Latenz und Erinnerungsabwehr wird gezeigt, wie fiktionale Texte zumindest Spuren des Verdrängens und Verstummens bezeugen und so den Rahmen des Sagbaren erweitern können.

    Robert Walsers Figuren- und Sprachgestaltung ist durch Momente der Uneindeutigkeit charakterisiert: einer Pendelbewegung zwischen Ernst und Unernst, dem geraden und mäandernden Weg, Echtheit und Als-ob sowie dem Aufbau und Bruch von Illusion. Diese Momente lassen sich unter dem Begriff des Spiels subsumieren und finden sich auch in der Romantik und bei Gegenwartsautoren. Mithilfe einer literarischen Spiel- und einer Modelltheorie arbeitet diese Studie Robert Walsers Funktion als Bindeglied zwischen Romantik und Gegenwart heraus. Sie weist die Ursprünge seiner „uneindeutigen“ Textgestaltung bei den untersuchten romantischen Autoren nach und zeigt, wie diese Art der Gestaltung bis in die Gegenwart fortwirkt. Neben Texten aus allen Schaffensphasen Robert Walsers stehen Werke von Joseph von Eichendorff, Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Tieck sowie Wilhelm Genazino und Matthias Zschokke im Zentrum.

    Die Darstellung ist konzeptueller Art; sie wird auf mehreren Ebenen entfaltet. Ausgehend von der historischen Situation, dem Leben der vorgestellten Romanisten – Vossler, Auerbach, Curtius, Spitzer –, geht es um die Romanistik als philologische Disziplin: um Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft im Kontext des Historismus. Das ergibt Reflexionen zur Philologie allgemein im Rahmen der Geisteswissenschaften und, als letzte Schicht, zur Geschichtlichkeit der Geisteswissenschaften. Die Arbeiten der vier Philologen sind im Horizont der europäischen Geschichte von der griechisch-jüdisch-römischen Antike über das christliche Mittelalter bis zur neuzeitlichen Moderne angesiedelt, getragen von einem starken Begriff der Geschichtlichkeit Europas. Die Philologie als Methode bildet ein kritisches Bewusstsein der Probleme historischer Erkenntnis aus und schärft die historische Urteilskraft.

    Over the long reception history of the Miltonic corpus, Milton’s treatment of sensory perception, as well as the sensory qualities (or lack thereof) observable in his poetry and prose, have given rise to often heated debate. Combining recent scholarship in the field of sensory studies with a conceptual-metaphor approach, this study proposes a new angle on Milton and the senses, arguing for the central importance of “sensory discourse” in both his poetry and prose, situating the author’s approach to perception in its early modern context, and highlighting throughout the interlocking claims to experiential knowledge and poetic merit that characterize sensory discourse in Milton. A particular focus is on Milton’s earliest poetry and prose – his Latin elegies and ‘prolusiones’ – as well as on the four proems to ‘Paradise Lost’.

    Im vorliegenden Buch wird das kulturelle Wissen des römischen Kalenders untersucht, wie es Ovid in den ‚Fasti‘ darstellt und selbst mitgestaltet. Die Studie geht von der These aus, dass das Gedicht sich in einem gemeinsamen Wissensdiskurs mit einer Reihe von poetischen wie auch historiographischen und antiquarischen Prosatexten befindet, was u. a. durch die zentrale, diesen Texten gemeinsame Gedankenfigur der Aitiologie oder Ursprungserklärung deutlich wird. Die Art und Weise dieses Zusammentreffens von Wissen und Literatur wird am Kernthema der ‚Fasti‘ dargestellt: der Geschichte der Kalenderkonstitution und der aitiologischen Erklärung der Gestalt, Ordnung und Namen des römischen Jahres. Die Studie stellt einen Beitrag zu einer literarischen Wissensgeschichte der römischen Literatur dar, ist also eine über historische Darstellungen der faktischen Ereignisse und Reformen des Kalenders hinausgehende Interpretation der poetischen Verarbeitung sozialer Zeitverhandlung in Rom.

    Über den gesamten Zeitraum seines dichterischen Schaffens reflektierte, positionierte und begleitete Paul Celan seine dichterischen Grundannahmen und Manifestationen in theoretischen Texten, Notizen, Materialsammlungen und Briefen. Es ging ihm dabei nicht um Interpretations- und Verständnisfragen einzelner Gedichte oder Gedichtbände, sondern darum, das Selbstverständnis und die Aufgabe der eigenen Dichtung sowie der Dichtung als solcher immer wieder von neuem zu befragen. Dabei liegt Celans ‚Theorie der Dichtung‘ nicht in geschlossener oder systematischer Form vor, sondern sie besteht aus einzelnen Vorstößen, Merksätzen und Bruchstücken. Es handelt sich um theoretische Ansätze, deren – dialogische, zeitdurchgreifende – Unabgeschlossenheit allerdings zu ihrem Prinzip gehört. Zu welchen Weisen des Mitdenkens regten und regen diese Ansätze an? Die Beiträge in diesem Band fragen nach der anhaltenden Aktualität von Celans Theorie der Dichtung heute.
