    Jon Mee explores the popular democratic movement that emerged in the London of the 1790s in response to the French Revolution. Central to the movement's achievement was the creation of an idea of 'the people' brought into being through print and publicity. Radical clubs rose and fell in the face of the hostile attentions of government. They were sustained by a faith in the press as a form of 'print magic,' but confidence in the liberating potential of the printing press was interwoven with hard-headed deliberations over how best to animate and represent the people. Ideas of disinterested rational debate were thrown into the mix with coruscating satire, rousing songs, and republican toasts. Print personality became a vital interface between readers and print exploited by the cast of radicals returned to history in vivid detail by Print, Publicity, and Popular Radicalism.     This is a book about contemporary literary and artistic entanglements: word and image, media and materiality, inscription and illustration. It proposes a vulnerable, fugitive mode of reading poetry, which defies disciplinary categorisations, embracing the open-endedness and provisionality of forms. This manifests itself interactively in the six case studies, which have been chosen for their distinctness and diversity across the long twentieth century: the book begins with the early twentieth-century work of writer and artist Djuna Barnes, exploring her re-animation of sculptural and dramatic sources. It then turns to the late modernist artist and poet David Jones considering his use of the graphic and plastic arts in The Anathemata, and next, to the0underappreciated mid-century poet F.T. Prince, whose work uncannily re-activates Michelangelo's poetry and sculpture. The second half of the book explores the collaborations of the canonical poet Ted Hughes with the publisher and artist Leonard Baskin during the 1970s; the innovative late twentieth-century poetry of Denise Riley who uses page space and embodied sound as a form of address; and, finally, the contemporary poet Paul Muldoon who has collaborated with photographers and artists, as well as ventriloquising nonhuman phenomena. 0The resulting unique study offers contemporary writers and readers a new understanding of literary, artistic, and nonhuman practices and shows the cultural importance of engaging with their messy co-dependencies.     ger: Zwischen der Herausgeberin sowie 'femme studieuse' Marie de Gournay (1565-1645) und dem Verfasser von Les Essais, Moralphilosophen sowie Staatsmann Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) bestand eine außergewöhnliche, fingierte Verwandtschaftsrelation: Im Jahr 1588 trafen sich die junge Unbekannte und der arrivierte Renaissancedenker zum ersten Mal in Paris und schlossen einen Bund in Form einer 'alliance'. Fortan nahmen sie aufeinander Bezug als 'père d’alliance' und 'fille d’alliance'. Die lebensweltliche Tragweite dieser Verbindung zwischen dem 'geistigen Ziehvater' Montaigne und seiner 'geistigen Ziehtochter' Marie de Gournay ist aufgrund mangelnder Quellen nur schwerlich fassbar, handelte es sich doch weder um eine durch Blutsverwandtschaft legitimierte noch um eine anderweitig rechtlich beglaubigte Verwandtschaftsbeziehung. Obgleich Montaigne verheiratet und Vater war, sollte es nach seinem Ableben im Jahr 1592 jedoch seine 'Tochter' Marie de Gournay sein, die – mit Unterstützung von Montaignes Witwe und Léonor, der einzigen leiblichen Tochter des Paares,– sowie anderer renommierter Köpfe der Gelehrtenrepublik zu seiner 'geistigen Erbin' avancierte: Marie de Gournay gab fortan jahrzehntelang Les Essais heraus, passte den Text orthographisch an und verteidigte ihn mittels von ihr verfasster Vorworte gegen Kritik. Parallel hierzu schrieb sie ein mehrere tausend Seiten starkes Gesamtwerk, das unter dem Titel Les Advis unterschiedliche Textgattungen und Themen vereint. Zudem trug Marie de Gournay für die Zeit nach ihrem Ableben dafür Sorge, dass sowohl Les Essais als auch Les Advis an die Nachwelt übertragen werden sollten und konnten. Eine komparative Lektüre von Les Essais und verschiedener, von Marie de Gournay verfasster Texte lässt den Schluss zu, dass diesbezüglich eine Kontinuitätslinie zwischen fille d’alliance und père d‘alliance festzustellen ist, welche diese besondere, frühneuzeitlich Übertragungspraxis ermöglichte: Es handelt sich dabei um das semantische Feld rund um den antiken Topos des literarischen Werkes als eigenes, geistiges ‚Kind'. Die Gesamtwerke Montaignes und Marie de Gournays werden ‚vererbt‘, indem sie metaphorisch zu ‚geistigen Kindern‘ stilisiert sowie als künftige ‚Waisen-Kinder‘ in und durch Nennungen in verschiedenen Texte einem Vormund angetragen werden. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich, ausgehend von dieser außergewöhnlichen alliance zwischen Marie de Gournay und Montaigne, mit Fragen des Erbens und Vererbens literarischer Werke in der Frühen Neuzeit, wobei textanalytische Zugänge durch kulturgeschichtliche, erbrechtliche und literatursoziologische Betrachtungen ergänzt wurden. eng: French writer, politician, and moral philosopher Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592) and his ‘covenant daughter’, editor and writer Marie de Gournay (1565-1645), shared a special bond. When the young, previously unknown woman and her idol met in Paris in 1588, they forged an alliance beyond blood ties, calling each other ‘spiritual father’ (‘père d’alliance’) and ‘spiritual daughter’ (‘fille d’alliance’). After her ‘father’ died, Marie de Gournay became a writer in her own right as well as the editor, preserver, and defender of Montaigne’s oeuvre. Surprisingly enough, although she had never been officially adopted by Montaigne, his fille d’alliance was supported as Montaigne’s ‘spiritual heir’ and as the editor of his magnum opus, Les Essais, by his widow and Léonor, his natural daughter, as well as by influential members of the Republic of Letters. Throughout her life, and in parallel to her career as Montaigne’s editor, Marie de Gournay wrote thousands of pages on various topics and published them under the title Les Advis. Scholarly attempts to define this unique relationship between the elderly writer Montaigne and the young erudite Marie de Gournay had to cope with the nonexistence of historical and juridical sources. A comparative study of Les Essais and of various other texts written by Marie de Gournay shows that his unique bond is echoed through their original interpretation of the ancient metaphor of the text as a textually, spiritually born child, both for Montaigne’s as well as for Marie de Gournay’s texts. Proceeding from this unusual alliance between Marie de Gournay and Montaigne, this work investigates the inheriting and bequeathing of literary works in the Early Modern era, combining text analytical approaches with observations from the fields of cultural history, inheritance law, and literary sociology.

    "Worldwide Women Writers in Paris examines a new literary phenomenon consisting of an unprecedented number of women from around the world who have come to Paris and become authors of written works in French. It takes as its starting point a series of filmed interviews conducted in the French capital, a set of recorded conversations motivated by a desire to pay homage to these discrete voices and images at a moment characterized by impressive diversity. Their individual paths to France and to French are noteworthy, and these authors of different generations and varying places of origin emphasize their singularity. However, the juxtaposition of their reflections reveals that many have faced similar difficulties when learning the French language, adapting to life in France, and many have encountered forms of prejudice in the publishing world related to their ethnicity or gender. These challenges have led them, each in an idiosyncratic manner, to tackle tough topics in their work and to respond to adversity by finding effective creative expressions.     Das Kriegsende 1918 brachte Europa keinen Frieden - schon 1917 begann eine Reihe von (Konter-)Revolutionen, Bürgerkriegen und gewaltsamen Konflikten, die sich über viele europäische Länder ausbreitete und bis 1923 andauerte. Diese Welle der politisch und ideologisch bedingten Gewalt, die sich nach einer Stabilisierungsphase mit der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1929 wieder entfesseln und ihren Höhepunkt mit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg erreichen wird, hängt mit mehreren Ursachen zusammen: mit der Auflösung alter Kontinentalimperien, Gründung problematischer Nationalstaaten und Entstehung radikaler Bewegungen, die ihre Ziele u.a. auch mit der paramilitärischen Gewalt zu erreichen suchten. Unterschiedliche Diskursivierungen dieser Themenkomplexe, die dem historischen Rahmen der 1910er und 1920er Jahre entsprungen sind und in der darauffolgenden Zeit weiterentwickelt wurden, werden im vorliegenden Sammelband von ForscherInnen aus verschiedenen Ländern, unterschiedlichen Fachdisziplinen und differenten methodologischen Perspektiven aufgegriffen und diskutiert.
