    The "Carmina XII sapientum" is a corpus of inscriptions from late classical antiquity which was widely received in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; it consists of twelve cycles of twelve poems, each cycle with a different theme. The titles of the manuscripts name twelve scholars as the authors. The present study provides the first detailed critical commentary on the individual elements of the corpus, dealing with all its textual, linguistic, stylistic and content-related aspects. The commentary on each cycle is preceded by a historical treatment of the motifs. In the process, the author reaches a completely new interpretation of this collection of epigrams. She presents it as a jocular work in the ancient literary tradition of the symposium; it was produced at the turn of the 4th century AD by a rhetorically skilled author already versed in Christian discourses, probably by the rhetor and later Christian apologist Lactantius

    The Columbia University Seminars, founded in 1945, represent a distinctive experiment in academia. Scholars from different disciplines and institutions, as well as practitioners and other experts, meet once a month through the academic year to study and discuss subjects, sometimes beyond their specialties. Through collegial discussion, participants learn from one another.     One of the remarkable facts about the history of Western culture is that we are still in a position to read large amounts of the literature produced in classical Greece and Rome despite the fact that for at least a millennium and a half all copies had to be produced by hand and were subject to the hazards of fire, flood, and war. This book explains how the texts survived and gives an account of the reasons why it was thought worthwhile to spend the necessary effort to preserve them for future generations. In the second edition a section of notes was included, and a new chapter was added to deal with some aspects of scholarship since the Renaissance. In the third edition (1991), the authors responded to the urgent need to take account of the very large number of discoveries in this rapidly advancing field of knowledge by substantially revising or enlarging certain sections. The last two decades have seen further advances, and this revised edition is designed to take account of them -- Antiquity -- The Greek East -- The Latin West -- The Renaissance -- Some aspects of scholarship since the Renaissance -- Textual Criticism

    Die Debatte um die Gestalt einer Wissensgeschichte des neuzeitlichen Europa bedarf der Korrektur. Es ist an der Zeit, endlich auch die prekäre Seite zu beleuchten: die Unsicherheit und Gefährdung bestimmter Theorie- und Wissensbestände, den heiklen Status ihres Trägermaterials, die Reaktion auf Bedrohung und Verlust, das Risiko häretischen Transfers. Martin Mulsow begibt sich auf die Spur dieses prekären Wissens mit dem Ziel, es in seiner Bedeutung für den Prozess der europäischen Wissensgeschichte zu rehabilitieren. In materialreichen Fallstudien, die den Zeitraum von der Renaissance bis zur Aufklärung umspannen, präsentiert er die Taktiken, die Intellektuelle ersonnen haben, um mit diesen Fährnissen leben zu können, ihre Rückzugsgesten, ihre Ängste, aber auch ihre Ermutigungen und Versuche, verlorenes Wissen wieder zurückzugewinnen. Prekäres Wissen handelt nicht von den großen Themen der Metaphysik und Epistemologie, sondern von Randzonen wie der Magie und der Numismatik, der Bibelinterpretation und der Orientalistik. Es geht nicht nur um Theorien, sondern auch um Furcht und Faszination, nicht um die großen Forschergestalten, sondern um vergessene und halbvergessene Gelehrte. Es ist ein Buch voller spannender Geschichten, eine andere Ideengeschichte der Frühen Neuzeit und zugleich der ambitionierte Versuch, den Begriff des Wissens selbst im Zeichen des "material turn", des "iconic turn" und der Kommunikations- und Informationsgeschichte neu zu denken
