    Main description: Die Sprache der jiddischen Bibelübersetzungstradition ist seit etwa 1400 in reichlichstem Maße durch Handschriften, seit etwa 1535 auch durch Drucke belegt. Ihren Hauptsitz im Leben hat sie im Chejder, der jüdischen Elementarschule. Der Beitrag dieser Übersetzungssprache zur jiddischen Gemeinsprache wurde bisher eklatant unterschätzt. Die Studie erfasst (1) an Hand der ersten hebräisch-jiddischen Bibelkonkordanz (um 1535) möglichst viele Elemente der Chejdersprache als diskrepant zur standarddeutschen Entwicklung und erklärt sie (2) aus dem hebräischen Urtext. Sie erweist sie (3) auf dem Weg durch die Bibelglossare und -übersetzungen als feste Bestandteile der Tradition und dokumentiert (4) ihr Einströmen in die jiddische Gemeinsprache bis hin zum Standardjiddischen. Ausgewertet wurden rund 120 Texte vom Ende des 14. bis zum 18. Jahrhundert

    Main description: The language used in the Yiddish Bible translation tradition is extremely well documented both by manuscripts (as of about 1400) and by printed versions (as of about 1535). In the real-life context, its most salient usage is located in the cheyder, the Jewish elementary school. The contribution of this translation idiom to the development of standard Yiddish has been hugely underrated. The present study (a) draws upon the first Hebrew-Yiddish Bible concordance (around 1535) to identify as many elements of cheyder language as possible that ran counter to the development of standard German, (b) explains them with reference to the original Hebrew text, (c) traces their presence in Bible glossaries and translations to establish them as consistent elements in the tradition, and (d) documents their incorporation into ordinary Yiddish all the way up to standard Yiddish. The study is based on the evaluation of some 120 texts from the late 14th to the 18th century

    Main description: The book contains a synchronic description of the phonetic structure of Warsaw Yiddish. This takes the form of a linguistic analysis of spoken Yiddish on the basis of interviews with the last remaining speakers of this Warsaw dialect, which is now on the verge of extinction. The recorded material is given in the second part of the book in a number of versions: phonetic/prosodic, Yiddish, German and Polish. Alongside a detailed description of the vowel and consonant systems there is also a taxonomy of sentence-phonetic phenomena representing an entirely new departure in the field of Yiddish studies. In addition typological issues posed by Yiddish morphosyntax are addressed from the perspective of the intermediate status of Yiddish between the Germanic and Slavonic language families

    Before the Second World War, some 25 million people in Eastern Europe spoke Yiddish or German. Their numbers had grown over 750 years. The two language groups spread and developed in relative isolation from each other, though they occupied much the same territory and experienced similar fates during the Russian Revolution. In this book, Peter Stenberg uses literature to trace the destinies of these two separate but related language groups. He analyses works by well-known writers such as Aleichem, Singer, and Roth, and by others lesser known, such as Granach and Franzos, to show how the stability of the world of the Jewish shtetl began to erode because of pressures from within and without during the early part of this century. The annihilation of the Yiddish world in the genocide of the Second World War is described in novels by Hilsenrath, Becker, and Steinke. The destruction and expulsion of much of the Baltic-German and Mennonite communities in the Russian Revolution are described by von Vegesack and Neufeld respectively: those events provides a dramatic backdrop for the fate of almost all the East European Germans at the end of the Second World War, as fictionalized in novels by Bobrowski, Wolf, Lenz, and Bienek. Using epic works of literature, Journey to Oblivion examines the two linguistically related cultures and how their symbiotic relationship ended in a macabre dance of death

    This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

    Es gibt nicht viele Filme auf Jiddisch, die einst meistgesprochene Sprache der osteuropäischen Juden. Jiddischsprachige Filme sind aber nicht nur aufgrund ihrer Seltenheit interessant. Die vier Filme, die in diesem Buch untersucht werden, sind spannende Werke, die eine komplexe Beziehung zu anderen Aspekten der jüdischen Kultur Osteuropas besitzen: Sie beziehen sich häufig auf wichtige Werke der jiddischsprachigen Literatur und verwenden zahlreiche jüdische Symbole, die dem heutigen Zuschauer häufig fremd sind. Mit diesem Buch bekommt ein interessiertes Publikum einen Einblick in die religiöse Symbolik und in den kulturellen Kontext von vier jiddischsprachigen Filmen aus den 1930er Jahren: The Dybbuk (R: Michał Waszyński, Polen, 1937), The Light Ahead (R: Edgar Ulmer, USA, 1939), Tevye the Milkman (R: Maurice Schwartz, USA, 1939) und The Yiddishe Mama (R: Henry Lynn, USA, 1939). Die behandelten Filme wurden in Polen und in den USA gedreht, alle haben jedoch einen engen Bezug zu Osteuropa. Die Filmemacher, die Filmvorlagen und die Filminhalte waren mit dem Leben in Osteuropa eng verbunden, auch wenn die meisten Filme jenseits des Atlantiks aufgenommen wurden. In diesem Buch werden Filme, die in einem geschlossenen jüdischen Mikrokosmos spielen, Filmen gegenüber gestellt, die eine Interaktion mit der nichtjüdischen Umwelt thematisieren. Religion spielt in beiden Szenarien eine wichtige Rolle. Dieses Buch stellt den kulturhistorischen Kontext der einzelnen Filme in ihrer Einzigartigkeit vor. Eine knappe Rezeptionsgeschichte der Filme rundet die Untersuchung ab. ; This book analyzes the religious symbolism of four Yiddish movies from the 1930s: The Dybbuk by Michał Waszyński (1937), The Light Ahead by Edgar Ulmer (1939), Tevye the Milkman by Maurice Schwartz and The Yiddishe Mama by Henry Lynn (1939).
