    As a writer, critic, and philosopher, Stanisław Brzozowski (1878-1911) left a lasting imprint on Polish culture. He absorbed virtually all topical intellectual trends of his time, adapting them for the needs of what he saw as his primary mission: the modernization of Polish culture. The essays of the volume reassess and contextualize Brzozowski's writings from a distinctly transnational vantage point. They shed light on often surprising and hitherto underrated affinities between Brzozowski and intellectual figures and movements in Eastern and Western Europe. Furthermore, they explore the presence of his ideas in twentieth-century century literary criticism and theory.

    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    Main description: Die Studie untersucht die literarische Imagination von Bibliotheken im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert sowie deren ideenhistorische Valenz. Die seit Erfindung des Buchdrucks sich vollziehende rasant beschleunigte Textproduktion und der damit einhergehende information overload schaffen die Voraussetzungen dafür, dass bestimmte Imaginationsleistungen erst möglich werden. Im Medium des Gedankenexperiments versuchen zeitgenössische Literaten und Gelehrte, Lösungen für die drängenden Probleme der Ordnung der ausufernden Textmengen und des Fortschritts der Erkenntnis angesichts unüberschaubar gewordener Wissensbestände zu entwerfen

    Main description: The study investigates imaginary libraries in literary works of the 16th and 17th centuries and their status in the context of the history of ideas. Since the invention of printing there had been a headlong increase in the production of texts, accompanied by a corresponding information overload. These were the preconditions required for certain feats of the imagination to become possible in the first place. In the form of thought-experiments, contemporary literary figures and scholars attempted to outline solutions for the urgent problems involved in imposing order on the unmanageable plethora of texts and assuring the progress of knowledge in the face of the untrammeled abundance of factual information

    Die Studie versteht das dichterische Werk des mexikanischen Nobelpreisträgers Octavio Paz (1914–1998) als eine in der poetischen Form ausgetragene offene Dialektik und eröffnet so neue Perspektiven auf das Œuvre. Ausgehend von exemplarischen Lektüren werden die ästhetischen Verfahren vor dem Horizont des politischen und philosophischen Denkens des 20. Jahrhunderts und der Geschichtserfahrung des Autors nachvollzogen. Die Hauptkapitel der Studie diskutieren Gedichte aus allen Schaffensphasen. Die in den Analysen aufgefundenen Konvergenzen zu Denkstil und Zeitkritik der Frankfurter Schule erlauben es, das Geschichtsdenken und den Freiheitsbegriff von Octavio Paz genauer zu fassen. Dessen Konturen sind durch eine tiefe Kenntnis der Schriften von Hegel, Marx und Freud sowie durch eine auf die lateinamerikanische Geschichte und Gegenwart bezogene Reflexion von Schlüsselbegriffen des Marxismus bestimmt. So gewinnt sein Schreiben vor dem Horizont der globalen Verwerfungen des 20. Jahrhunderts eine Kontur, deren Linien auch auf die Konflikte des 21. Jahrhunderts verweisen

    The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Britain saw the proposal of so many endeavors called "projects"—a catchphrase for the daring, sometimes dangerous practice of shaping the future—that Daniel Defoe dubbed his era a "Projecting Age." These ideas spanned a wide variety of scientific, technological, and intellectual interventions intended for the betterment of England. But for all the fanfare surrounding them, few such schemes actually materialized, leaving scores of defunct visions, from Defoe's own attempt to farm cats for perfume, to Mary Astell's proposal to charter a college for women, to countless ventures for improving land, streamlining government, and inventing new consumer goods. Taken together, these failed plans form a compelling alternative history of a Britain that might have been.The Wreckage of Intentions offers a comprehensive and critical account of projects, exploring the historical memory surrounding these concrete yet incomplete efforts to advance British society during a period defined by revolutions in finance and agriculture, the rise of experimental science, and the establishment of constitutional monarchy. Using methods of literary analysis, David Alff shows how projects began as written proposals, circulated as print objects, spurred physical undertakings, and provoked responses in the realms of poetry, fiction, and drama. Mapping this process discloses the ways in which eighteenth-century authors applied their faculties of imagination to achieve finite goals and, in so doing, devised new ways of seeing the world through its future potential. Approaching old projects through the language, landscapes, data, and personas they left behind, Alff contends this vision was, and remains, vital to the functions of statecraft, commerce, science, religion, and literature
