    Dieses Buch handelt davon, wie Nahrungverzichtes in literarischen und medizinischen Texten im ausgehenden 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert wahrgenommen wurde. Es eröffnet so Einblicke in eine Zeit, in der unser modernes, von der Medizin geprägtes Verständnis von Ernährung entstanden ist. Untersucht werden der Zusammenhang zwischen Nervenkrankheit und Ernährung – heute noch präsent in dem Wort „Nervennahrung“ – und die Beschreibung radikalen Hungerns von Mädchen und Frauen als anorexia nervosa. Es geht um Nahrungsabstinenz von Männern im Rahmen eines kontrollierten Experiments, bei Versuchen mit „Hungerkünstlern“ in Mailand und Berlin und als Selbsterfahrung von Schriftstellern. Quellen dieser Studie sind nicht nur literarische Texte wie Erzählungen und autobiographische Schriften von Franz Kafka und Robert Walser, Romane von Theodor Fontane und Knut Hamsun, Hedwig Dohm und Gabriele Reuter, sondern auch medizinische Fallgeschichten, Lehr- und Handbücher, wissenschaftliche Monographien. Im Sinne einer Poetik der Kultur wird so für die Literatur ein neuer Kontext entfaltet und gleichzeitig kommen die kulturellen Entstehungsbedingungen medizinischen Wissens in den Blick. ; The study analyzes the representation of anorexia in literary and medical texts from 1870 to 1925, providing new insights into the formation of our modern medical notions of nutrition. It was around 1900 that physicians claimed a connection between nutrition and diseases of the nervous system, which they classified as neurasthenia or as hysteria. Anorexia nervosa was described as an illness that affected primarily girls and women. The radical fasting of men, in contrast, was considered as a form of special dieting. Popular physiological experiments with "hunger artists" thus focused on the male body. A close reading of literary and autobiographical texts by Franz Kafka and Robert Walser shows how these authors appropriated the contemporary medical and popular conceptions of eating.

    Beginning with the spectacle of hysteria, moving through the perversions of fetishism, masochism, and sadism, and ending with paranoia and psychosis, this book explores the ways that conflicts with the Oedipal law erupt on the body and in language in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, for Chaucer’s tales are rife with issues of mastery and control that emerge as conflicts not only between authority and experience but also between power and knowledge, word and flesh, rule books and reason, man and woman, same and other – conflicts that erupt in a macabre sprawl of broken bones, dismembered bodies, cut throats, and decapitations. Like the macabre sprawl of conflict in the Canterbury Tales, this book brings together a number of conflicting modes of thinking and writing through the surprising and perhaps disconcerting use of "shadow" chapters that speak to or against the four "central" chapters, creating both dialogue and interruption

    Beginning with the spectacle of hysteria, moving through the perversions of fetishism, masochism, and sadism, and ending with paranoia and psychosis, this book explores the ways that conflicts with the Oedipal law erupt on the body and in language in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, for Chaucer’s tales are rife with issues of mastery and control that emerge as conflicts not only between authority and experience but also between power and knowledge, word and flesh, rule books and reason, man and woman, same and other – conflicts that erupt in a macabre sprawl of broken bones, dismembered bodies, cut throats, and decapitations. Like the macabre sprawl of conflict in the Canterbury Tales, this book brings together a number of conflicting modes of thinking and writing through the surprising and perhaps disconcerting use of "shadow" chapters that speak to or against the four "central" chapters, creating both dialogue and interruption
