    Abstract: Satirische Beschreibungen der Frau, zumeist aus der Perspektive von Männern, sind in der Literatur der Frühen Neuzeit ubiquitär.[1] Während sich im Zuge der Aufklärung die essentialistische Vorstellung zweier ‹natürlicher› und unwandelbarer Geschlechter weitgehend durchsetzte, galt die Frau zuvor vorrangig als defizitäre Version des Mannes, woraus ihre ontologische Inferiorität abgeleitet wurde.[2] Das 17. Jahrhundert repräsentiert die Hochphase der Querelle des Sexes im deutschsprachigen Raum, des Geschlechterstreits, in welchem der moralische Rang, der Wert sowie die intellektuellen Fähigkeiten von Frauen zunehmend kontrovers diskutiert wurden.[3]

    Frauensatiren zielen auf Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen weiblicher Figuren, die einer gesellschaftlich kodierten gender-Norm nicht entsprechen und insofern auch ‹den Mann› mittel- oder unmittelbar betreffen. So stellen ‹böse Frauen› eine Herausforderung für die Männer dar, wie Balthasar Kindermann in seiner prosimetrischen Satire Die Böse Sieben (1662) – frei nach Salomon – paradigmatisch zum Ausdruck bringt: «Denn ich mich/ in Wahrheit/ für den bösen Weibern ärger fürchte/ als für allen ThiegerThieren in gantz Lybien».[4] Insofern, als die wirkungsästhetische Funktion der Frauensatire darin besteht, mit der übersteigerten Repräsentation weiblichen Unwesens die gegenderte Norm zu affirmieren, reagiert die Frauensatire auf die in der Querelle des Sexes artikulierte Infragestellung vermeintlich gottgegebener männlicher Überlegenheit.[5] Doch neben der dargestellten Normverletzung (diegetische Ebene) mit einhergehender Normstabilisierung (vorgebliche Intention) birgt die literarische Gattung immer auch das subversive Potenzial, die Legitimität der jeweiligen Norm in Frage zu stellen.[6]

    Wenn Frauen in vielen Texten der Frühen Neuzeit als wollüstig, herrschsüchtig, hässlich, unmoralisch und ungebildet repräsentiert werden, wird an topische Traditions- und Argumentationsstrukturen angeknüpft. Die sprachlichen Mittel reichen von realistischer Darstellung über groteske Überzeichnung hin zu offener Komik und entwickeln mithin eine ästhetische Eigendynamik, die mit der vermeintlichen wirkungsästhetisch-didaktischen Erzählabsicht konfligiert. Deutschsprachige Frauensatiren wurden bisher vor allem als spätmittelalterliches Phänomen behandelt und weniger auf Umprägungen und Neuakzentuierungen hin untersucht.[7] Unberücksichtigt blieb so die Frage, inwieweit der frühneuzeitliche Genderdiskurs von der humanistischen Antikerezeption beeinflusst und modifiziert wurde.[8] Im Folgenden soll gezeigt werden, wie der klassische Gründungstext der antiken Frauensatire, Semonides’ Weiberiambos (7. Jh. v. Chr.), eines der ältesten Zeugnisse der griechischen Literaturgeschichte, die Geschlechterdebatte der Frühen Neuzeit prägte

    Peace dealings in Early Modern times resembled more business transactions than anything else, peopled by actors being influenced by their country's specific circumstances or sometimes by chance alone. The danger of misunderstandings, whether precipitated through false translations or false interpretations, was imminent in all such proccedings. But ignorance too played an active role in both the political and legal background of Early Modern times. This collection of articles is concerned with both the temporal and the thematic contexts of the phenomena of "misunderstanding" and "ignorance." It provides many insights into the architecture of premodern communication. ; Die Verhandlungen um Frieden glichen im Europa der Frühen Neuzeit dem Aushandeln eines Geschäfts, das von Akteuren, spezifischen Umständen aber auch Zufällen beeinflusst wurde. Daher war die Gefahr missverständlicher Übersetzungs- und Deutungsoptionen fester Bestandteil von Friedensverhandlungen. Auch die "Ignoranz" spielte in der Politik und Jurisprudenz der Frühen Neuzeit eine wichtige Rolle. Häufig wurde Unwissen vorgetäuscht, um argumentative, politische und juristische Vorteile zu erlangen. In diesem Band versammeln sich Frühneuzeit-, Ideen-, Friedens-, Rechts- und Kunsthistoriker, um zentrale Fragen nach dem Einfluss von Unwissen und sprachlichen oder kulturellen Missverständnissen im vormodernen Friedensprozess zu beantworten.     We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

    From the second half of the nineteenth century through to World War II, Eastern Europe, especially the territories that formerly made up the Pale of Settlement in the Tsarist Empire, witnessed a Jewish cultural flowering that went hand-in-hand with a multifaceted literary productivity in the Hebrew and Yiddish languages. Accompanied and sometimes directly affected by the dramatic political ruptures of the era, many authors experimented with various modernist poetics in the context of a culturally and literarily closely interwoven milieu. This book presents for the first time some of the key figures of the era, including in each case a portrait of the author and a close reading of selected texts, including Yosef Ḥayim Brenner, Leah Goldberg, Moyshe Kulbak, and Deborah Vogel. Of particular interest here is the productive entanglement of cultures and literatures, of cultural contact and transfer, and the significance of space and place for the development of modern Jewish literatures.

    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    Als prekärer Teil des affirmativen Reichspatriotismus (1870–1880) trieben diffamierte oder gering geachtete Geschichtsromane wie Dahns Kampf um Rom, Fontanes Vor dem Sturm, Freytags Ahnen oder Sacher-Masochs Weiblicher Sultan Geschichtsreflexion und Identitätsbildung entscheidend voran. Wie Meyers Jürg Jenatsch problematisieren sie den zeitgenössischen Umgang mit Geschichte und stehen damit am Beginn der Krise des Historismus.Die vorliegende Dispositivanalyse weist das hochreflexive Ineinander von Affirmation und Subversion nach, zu dem sich die Romane mit Nietzsches Historienschrift, Droysens Geschichtssemiotik, Menzels Abkehr vom Geschichtsgemälde, aber auch mit Denkmaleinweihungen, den Jubelfeiern 1870/71, Verlagsanzeigen, Professorenromanen, Zeitschriftenartikeln und -illustrationen verschränken. Eingehende Interpretation gängiger und abseitiger Text- und Bilddokumente entwerfen zentrale Elemente der Kulturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts völlig neu. As a precarious part of affirming imperial patriotism (1870–1880), defamed or little-respected historical novels decisively promoted historical reflection and identity formation. These novels expounded the problems of the contemporary handling of history and, therefore, stand at the beginning of the crisis of historism. The current dispositive analysis shows the highly reflexive intertwining of affirmation and subversion, to which the novels are connected with Nietzsche’s historical writings, Droysen’s historical semiotics, and Menzel’s turning away from historical painting, but also those with monument dedications, the jubilee celebration of 1870/71, publishing house advertisements, professor novels, newspaper articles and newspaper illustrations.

Schriftsteller, NS-Funktionär, Kriegsberichterstatter, Drehbuchautor: Der Südtiroler Anton Graf Bossi-Fedrigotti (1901-1990) kletterte die Karriereleiter im nationalsozialistischen Deutschen Reich weit nach oben. Als Angehöriger des österreichisch-südtirolischen Adels wurde er 1918/19 zum desillusionierten Kriegsverlierer, später vom italienischen Soldaten zum engagierten Nationalsozialisten und einflussreichen Vermittler zwischen Südtirol und der NSDAP. Nach seiner Flucht aus Italien 1928 wurde ihm seine Heimat Südtirol ein "urdeutsches Land", dessen Geschichte er literarisch für völkisch-ideologische Zwecke instrumentalisierte. Früh wechselte er auf die erfolgversprechende Seite und diente sich höchsten NS-Vertretern an. Als Kriegsberichterstatter des Auswärtigen Amtes erlebte er den Zweiten Weltkrieg an verschiedenen Fronten und beteiligte sich aktiv am rasseideologischen Vernichtungskampf. 1945 bedeutete kein Karriereende für Bossi-Fedrigotti: Ein dichtes Netz aus Weggefährten, NS-Sympathisanten und rechtsextremen Verlagen fing ihn auf. Vom Land Tirol mit einem Orden geehrt, publizierte er bis 1990 ideologisch belastete Texte - darunter nicht wenige für Kinder und Jugendliche

The studies show Jews practising divination (astrology, bibliomancy, physiognomy, dream requests, astral magic, etc.) and implementing the study and practice of the prognostic arts in ways that allowed Jews to make them "Jewish," by avoiding any conflict with Jewish law or halakhah.
