Bringing together three generations of scholars, thinkers and activists, this book is the first to trace a genealogy of the specific contributions Indo-Caribbean women have made to Caribbean feminist epistemology and knowledge production. Challenging the centrality of India in considerations of the forms that Indo-Caribbean feminist thought and praxis have taken, the authors turn instead to the terrain of gender negotiations among Caribbean men and women within and across racial, class, religious, and political affiliations. Addressing the specific conditions which emerged within the region and highlighting the cross-racial solidarities and the challenges to narratives of purity that have been constitutive of Indo-Caribbean feminist thought, this collection connects to the broader indentureship diaspora and what can be considered post-indentureship feminist thought. Violent Women in Contemporary Cinema explores the representation of homicidal women in six contemporary films: Antichrist (Lars von Trier, 2009), Trouble Every Day (Claire Denis, 2001), Baise-moi (Coralie Thinh Thi and Virginie Despentes, 2000), Heavenly Creatures (Peter Jackson, 1994), Monster (Patty Jenkins, 2003) and The Reader (Stephen Daldry, 2008). Violent women in cinema pose an exciting challenge to viewers when women kill, they overturn cultural ideas of 'typical' feminine behaviour. Janice Loreck explores how cinema creatively depicts the violent woman in response to this challenge. Departing from earlier studies that focus on popular and exploitation cinema, the book takes a unique focus on violent women in art films and other critically-distinguished forms. It explores the appeal that the violent woman holds for spectators within this viewing context. Furthermore, the book also examines how cinema responds to the cultural construction of the violent woman as a conundrum and enigma

This critical analysis of contemporary film, television and video, examines how queer girls have become more regular onscreen in recent years, why this occurs, why it is problematic, and how some screen texts have responded. It wasn't until 1987 that one of teen television’s first queer girls appeared on the Canadian series Degrassi Junior High. It took more than a decade for same-sex attracted female characters to regularly appear on Western television, and a further decade for this to regularly occur within teen-oriented programming. Nowadays, queer girls are the major characters in mainstream television series as well as the protagonists and love interests in both short and feature length films around the globe. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit dem literarischen Werk der algerischen Autorin Assia Djebar (*1936). Ihr Hauptaugenmerk richtet sich auf den 1995 erschienenen Roman Vaste est la prison, den die Autorin als Teil eines auf vier Bände ausgelegten autobiografischen Projekts, des Quatuor algérien, charakterisiert. Insofern sich eine isolierte Betrachtung des Romans als unzulänglich erweist, finden die beiden anderen bislang erschienenen und von der Autorin als ihm zugehörig ausgewiesenen Romane des Quatuor, L’Amour, la fantasia (1985) und Ombre Sultane (1987), ebenfalls Berücksichtigung in der Analyse. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht einerseits das auch für ihr übriges Werk zentrale Geschichtsverständnis der Autorin, die selbst Historikerin ist und auf die Unmöglichkeit einer objektiven Geschichtsschreibung aufmerksam macht. In ihren Werken setzt Djebar der offiziellen Geschichtsschreibung ihre eigene, stets die Perspektive der Vergessenen und Unterdrückten einnehmende Version von Geschichte entgegen. Dies erfolgt auf der Ebene größerer historischer Zusammenhänge wie der französischen Kolonialisierung Algeriens ebenso wie auf der Ebene persönlicher Biografien und Lebenserinnerungen. Andererseits konzentriert sich die Studie auf das spezifische Verständnis von Feminismus der Autorin, die eine eindeutige Positionierung im Hinblick auf arabische und europäische feministische Bewegungen entschieden ablehnt. Stattdessen stellt sie in ihrem Werk unterschiedliche Lebensentwürfe algerischer Frauen als gleichwertig nebeneinander und fokussiert eine weibliche Perspektive in der Geschichte

This book asks how 21st century technologies such as the Internet, mobile phones and social media are transforming human memory and its relationship to gender. Each epoch brings with it new media technologies that have transformed human memory. Anna Reading examines the ways in which globalised digital cultures are changing the gender of memory and memories of gender through a lively set of original case studies in the ‘globital age’. The study analyses imaginaries of gender, memory and technology in utopian literature; it provides an examination of how foetal scanning alters the gendered memories of the human being. Reading draws on original research on women’s use of mobile phones to capture and share personal and family memories as well as analysing changes to journalism and gendered memories, focusing on the mobile witnessing of terrorism and state terror. The book concludes with a critical reflection on Anna Reading’s work as a playwright mobilising feminist memories as part of a digital theatre project 'Phenomenal Women with Fuel Theatre' which created live and digital memories of inspirational women. Anna Voigt untersucht mit einer diskursanalytischen Vorgehensweise Formen von Männlichkeit in der US-Serie „Six Feet Under“ und kommt auf Grundlage kritischer Geschlechter- und Männlichkeitsforschung zu dem Ergebnis, dass auf der Folie ökonomischer Krisen eine Abkehr von komplementären Geschlechtscharakteren stattfindet während männliche Herrschaft weiterhin Wirkungsweisen entfaltet. Die Autorin kontrastiert ihre Analyseergebnisse mit den Serien „The L-Word“ und „Queer as Folk“ und dokumentiert, wie die inszenierten Formen von Männlichkeit mit Klassenverhältnissen und Fragen von Ethnizität und Rassismus in Sozialstrukturen und Institutionen verknüpft sind und dekonstruiert in Fernsehserien vermitteltes Wissen über Geschlecht. Der Band befasst sich mit der Frage nach der politischen und gesellschaftlichen Partizipation von Frauen und Männern in muslimischen Gesellschaften vor, während und nach dem Arabischen Frühling, sowie der Bedeutung von Geschlechter(de)konstruktionen in einer Gesellschaft im Wandel. In den meisten Ländern des "Arabischen Frühlings" sind die Geschlechterverhältnisse durch eine patriarchale Struktur und Tradition geprägt, die besonders Frauen in ihrer persönlichen Freiheit und in ihrer politischen Mitbestimmung einschränkt. Die revolutionären Prozesse in diesen Gesellschaften bieten die Chance, die Geschlechterverhältnisse aufzubrechen, neu zu denken und zu verhandeln. Die Selbstbefreiung der arabischen Frauen kann nicht automatisch durch die aktuellen revolutionären Veränderungen gelingen. Dennoch wohnt Revolutionen ein utopisches Potential inne, das durch keine konterrevolutionären Maßnahmen aufgehalten werden kann. Zwischen revolutionärer Wirklichkeit und inspirierter Utopie geht der Kampf um die Selbstbefreiung der Frauen (und der Männer) in der arabischen Welt weiter

How is it possible to fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) without disrespecting traditional values? This study analyses ‘film’ as a tool for Human Rights Education in Burkina Faso, especially when it includes thought structures of the local communities. Here, the innovative approach of ciné débat, a particular cinematic awareness-raising strategy is applied and analysed. Thus, this research describes how a documentary film about FGM in Burkina Faso was produced and presented. It is believed that the critical reconsideration of one’s own thoughts represents a prerequisite for changing habits. The aim is to find solutions within the traditional context of the country, not to dictate or instruct behaviour patterns to the locals.
